A plan may permit a distribution after you leave your job, at age 59½, or for an eligible hardship. It may also offer a loan, which must be repaid. A taxable withdrawal before age 59½ can trigger ordinary income tax and a separate 10% additional tax unless an exception applies. Start by checking your Summary Plan Description and asking your plan administrator what your plan allows.
What are your options for accessing a 401(k) before retirement?
Retirement is not the only point at which money may become available, but federal rules do not guarantee that every plan offers every option. The plan document and Summary Plan Description explain which distributions and loans your employer’s plan permits.
| Route | When it may be available | Repayment | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan distribution | When a plan permits a distribution for a recognized event, such as separation from employment, reaching age 59½, or an eligible hardship | No repayment | Taxable amounts are generally income; before age 59½, the 10% additional tax may also apply unless an exception fits. [IRS, Topic no. 424] |
| Hardship distribution | If the plan offers it and the need and amount meet applicable requirements | Cannot be repaid to the plan | May be taxable and subject to the additional tax; permanently reduces retirement savings. [IRS, Retirement topics—Hardship distributions] |
| Plan loan | If the plan offers loans and you qualify under its terms | Must be repaid on the plan’s schedule | An unpaid balance may become a distribution with tax consequences. [IRS, Topic no. 424] |
Can you take money out while you are still working?
Possibly. The answer depends on your plan’s rules, your age, and the source of the account funds. A plan may permit certain in-service distributions, but it does not have to offer every distribution option. Check the Summary Plan Description for eligibility, limits, application steps, and any fees or withholding details; confirm the answer with the plan administrator before submitting a request. What qualifies for a hardship withdrawal?
A hardship distribution is available only if your plan permits it and you meet the applicable rules for an immediate and heavy financial need. The distribution cannot exceed the amount necessary to address that need under those rules. The IRS identifies categories that include:

- Certain medical care expenses.
- Costs directly related to buying a principal residence, excluding mortgage payments.
- Qualifying postsecondary education expenses for the next 12 months.
- Payments needed to prevent eviction from a principal residence or foreclosure on its mortgage.
- Funeral expenses.
- Certain costs to repair damage to a principal residence.
These categories do not mean a plan must offer hardship withdrawals or that every expense within a category automatically qualifies. Ask the administrator what the plan accepts and what documentation it requires. [IRS, Retirement topics—Hardship distributions]
A hardship distribution is generally taxable to the extent it comes from previously untaxed funds. It cannot be repaid to the plan or rolled over to another plan or IRA, so the amount taken is no longer invested in your account for retirement. It may also be subject to the 10% additional tax. What taxes can apply to an early withdrawal?
Separate the two potential tax costs. A taxable distribution is generally included in your income. If you take it before age 59½, a separate 10% additional tax may apply unless you qualify for an exception. The additional tax is not a substitute for ordinary income tax, and avoiding it does not necessarily make a distribution tax-free. [IRS, Topic no. 424]
When the age-55 exception may matter
An exception may apply to distributions from a qualified retirement plan other than an IRA if you separate from service in or after the calendar year you reach age 55. This is not a blanket exemption for every early withdrawal: eligibility depends on the timing and circumstances, and the source of the money matters. Confirm how the rule applies to your situation with the plan administrator or a tax professional. [IRS, Topic no. 424]

Can you withdraw from a 401(k) after quitting your job?
Leaving your job can make a distribution available under plan rules, but it does not automatically make a withdrawal tax-free or free of the additional tax. The plan determines its distribution procedures and choices. Before requesting payment, ask the administrator what options are available for your account and how the distribution will be reported; consider tax advice if the consequences are unclear. The age-55 exception may be relevant for some workers who separate from service, subject to its conditions.
Is a 401(k) loan better than a hardship withdrawal?
Neither option is automatically better. A loan preserves the distinction between borrowing and taking a distribution only while it follows the plan’s terms and is repaid as required. A hardship withdrawal does not have to be repaid, but it permanently removes money from the account and may have tax costs.
Your plan does not have to offer loans. If it does, ask for the repayment schedule and what happens if you leave your job or miss payments. The IRS warns that an unpaid amount can become a distribution, and the plan may require full repayment after you leave. Any resulting taxable amount may also face the 10% additional tax unless an exception applies. [IRS, Topic no. 424]

- Read the Summary Plan Description. Look for the distribution and loan sections, eligibility conditions, and how to apply.
- Ask the plan administrator about your specific account. Confirm which options apply given your employment status, age, and account-fund sources.
- Estimate the tax impact. Ask how much may be taxable and whether an exception to the additional tax could apply; consult a tax professional for individual advice.
- Compare the lasting effects. A distribution cannot be repaid as a hardship withdrawal, while a loan requires repayment and may become a distribution if unpaid.
The IRS explains that distributable events and plan procedures depend on the plan’s provisions; its general guidance cannot establish what a particular employer plan allows. [IRS, 401k Resource Guide: Plan Participants—General Distribution Rules]
