The latest completed U.S. trading session covered here is Wednesday, October 7, 2026: all four major indexes in the report closed lower, retreating after the S&P 500 set a record the day before. These are closing figures—not live October 8 prices. The Associated Press cited rising bond yields, inflation and government-debt concerns, and oil-market uncertainty among the pressures on markets.

How the major U.S. indexes closed on October 7

The Associated Press reported declines across the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000. The small-cap Russell 2000 had the steepest percentage drop of the four.

Index October 7 close Change that session
S&P 500 7,801.77 Down 17.16 points (0.2%)
Dow Jones Industrial Average 51,179.87 Down 341.41 points (0.7%)
Nasdaq Composite 27,538.69 Down 61.20 points (0.2%)
Russell 2000 2,793.20 Down 37.09 points (1.3%)

These are the AP’s reported closing levels and one-day changes for October 7, not intraday quotes. The S&P 500 had reached an all-time high on Tuesday, October 6, before pulling back the next session. The AP’s closing roundup also put year-to-date gains through October 7 at 14% for the S&P 500, 6.5% for the Dow, 18.5% for the Nasdaq Composite and 12.5% for the Russell 2000.

What the AP reported about the market pullback

The AP described rising yields worldwide amid high inflation, governments’ growing debt loads and other concerns as sources of pressure on investment prices. Those are reported factors, not proof that any one of them alone caused the day’s move.

Treasury yields rose, then eased

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.36% during Wednesday morning, compared with 5.27% late Tuesday, then eased to 5.28% after the Treasury auctioned $39 billion in 10-year notes, according to the AP. Bond yields can affect investment prices and borrowing costs; the report did not establish that this yield movement alone explains the index declines. See the AP’s account of Wednesday’s retreat for its market context.

Oil remained a source of uncertainty

The AP also described volatile oil prices amid uncertainty over the Iran conflict and the oil industry’s return to normal. That account identifies a market concern; it does not quantify oil’s contribution to the index declines.

What this update does—and does not—tell you

“Stock market today” and “live updates” imply current information, but October 7 closing data cannot establish where stocks or Treasury yields stand on October 8. CNBC’s market page organizes its market coverage and latest news; check a current quote source for live prices and a current news report for developments after Wednesday’s close.

A separate CNBC update archived for October 1 reported stocks rising after weaker jobs data. That earlier session is historical context, not evidence of October 8 trading or a reason to generalize about the market’s direction. The archived October 1 live update illustrates why each daily recap needs its own date and catalysts.
