Pack the device securely and check the lithium-battery requirements for your specific service and route; requirements can differ, particularly for air and international shipments.
Choose packaging that protects the laptop
FedEx says, “We recommend our easy-to-pack laptop box for shipping.” It includes specially made cushioning. FedEx also allows intact manufacturer packaging or other suitable boxes and packing materials as alternatives.
Using the original packaging
- Check that the box is undamaged and the cushioning is intact.
- Use the original packaging components so the laptop is held securely.
- If repairs are needed, use packing tape at least 2 inches wide.
If you do not have the original packaging
Use a sturdy outer shipping box and suitable cushioning. Secure the laptop so it cannot shift in transit. FedEx’s laptop guidance recommends its purpose-made box, but suitable alternatives are possible when they protect the device adequately.
Pack the laptop step by step
- Back up important data. Do this before handing over the laptop for shipment.
- Select protective packaging. Use the FedEx laptop box if it is suitable and available, or choose intact manufacturer packaging or another sturdy box with suitable cushioning.
- Secure the device. Use the fitted cushioning or packing materials to prevent movement. Follow the battery instructions that apply to your shipment.
- Inspect and close the package. Confirm the cushioning and box are intact, include original components if using the manufacturer’s packaging, and use tape at least 2 inches wide for repairs.
- Check the shipment requirements. Confirm the battery, route and service requirements with current FedEx guidance before tendering the package.
Check lithium-battery rules before shipping
Laptops commonly contain lithium-ion batteries. FedEx describes lithium batteries as dangerous goods because charged batteries can overheat or ignite in certain conditions. Its guidance says the battery generally does not need to be removed from a laptop, but notes rules for overnight shipment using FedEx expedited services. The applicable requirements depend on the battery configuration, route and service, so do not assume one marking or paperwork instruction applies to every package.

FedEx says it does not accept recalled or defective batteries, including batteries contained in equipment. Its dangerous-goods guidance also says job-specific training is required for dangerous-goods shipments. If your device has a damaged, recalled or defective battery, or if you are unsure which requirements apply, confirm acceptance and instructions with FedEx before shipping.
This guidance reflects FedEx U.S. information. For an international shipment, check whether FedEx accepts the laptop for the particular destination and service, and verify the current battery rules for that route.

Estimate the shipping cost for your package
FedEx says, “Shipping costs depend on the weight and size of the box and your delivery needs.” A useful estimate therefore requires the origin and destination, the packed box’s dimensions and weight, and the service or delivery speed you want. A single price without those details would not reliably represent your shipment.
Understand declared value and liability
FedEx’s laptop guidance says the first $100 of shipment value is included under its standard declared-value limit of liability. That limit is not the same as FedEx-provided insurance. FedEx says third-party insurance may be purchased; review current terms and options for your shipment before deciding how to cover a higher-value laptop.

Consider local packing help
FedEx says locations that offer packing services can pack computers. Service availability and price vary by location, so contact or check with the specific FedEx location before bringing in your laptop. A location’s packing service does not remove the need to confirm that the battery and route meet shipping requirements.

What to confirm before handing over the box
- The laptop is protected against movement and the box and cushioning are intact.
- The packed weight and dimensions, origin, destination and chosen delivery service are ready for a price estimate.
- The battery is not recalled or defective, and you have checked the current requirements for its configuration, route and service.
- You understand the difference between the declared-value liability limit and third-party insurance, and have reviewed current terms if you need additional protection.
