Promote music by making it easier for real listeners to discover, hear and share it: plan the release, use each platform’s artist tools, direct fans to the music, and track where listeners come from. Avoid services that promise a fixed number of streams, followers or playlist placements for a fee. Those guarantees are not legitimate under Spotify’s guidance, and Apple says paid claims to obtain more Apple Music plays are not authorized by Apple.
What counts as artificial streaming—and why it matters
Artificial streaming is activity intended to inflate plays or other engagement rather than reflect genuine listening. It can involve bots, fake accounts, automated systems or coordinated manipulation. You do not need to know the technical method to recognize the core risk: a provider promising a set number of plays or playlist placement is selling an outcome that platforms warn against.
Spotify says artificial streams do not earn royalties, count toward public stream numbers or charts, or positively influence recommendations. Depending on severity, Spotify may remove tracks from playlists. Distributors may issue warnings, charge penalties, suspend an artist account or remove music. YouTube prohibits artificially increasing views, likes, comments or other metrics, and promoting services that do so; artificial traffic may not count and policy violations can lead to strikes or channel termination. How to promote a release without buying streams
Before release: prepare the destination and the story
Give listeners a clear reason to care and a simple route to the music. Apple Music for Artists recommends planning a release, preparing social posts and customized release assets, and sharing direct links. Make your artist profile useful and current: update the image and biography, add lyrics where available, and maintain an up-to-date website or embedded player. These are practical foundations, not promises of a particular stream count.

If you want to pitch a track for editorial consideration, use the platform’s own submission route when it is available and you are eligible. During the campaign: invite genuine listening
Build each post or outreach effort around something real: the story behind the release, a live performance, a collaboration, a short-form video or a direct invitation to listen. YouTube permits creators to ask viewers to subscribe, like, share or comment; the line is crossed when engagement is inflated artificially or obtained through services that sell it.

Use audience information to focus effort where listeners already appear. Apple recommends using Apple Music for Artists statistics to identify cities and towns where fans are located, and making concert dates discoverable in Shazam. Tailor local posts, show announcements or outreach to those places rather than treating a broad, unexplained audience as proof of demand. Hiring PR or marketing help: evaluate the method, not the promise
A legitimate provider should be able to explain how it reaches potential listeners. Spotify recommends researching a company’s methods and reviews, asking artists who have used it, and looking for reports of artificial-streaming problems. Before paying, assess the offer against these checks:

- Method: Can the provider explain what it will do to reach real listeners?
- Guarantees: Does it promise a fixed stream count, follower increase or playlist placement? Spotify says such offers are not legitimate and should be avoided. Apple says a person or company claiming it can get you more Apple Music plays for a fee is not authorized by Apple.
- Audience fit: Does the proposed audience make sense for your genre and the listener locations you can actually see?
- Independent evidence: Can you check prior-client accounts and find credible reports about the provider’s practices?
- Measurability and cost: Are the deliverables clear enough to compare with platform analytics, and is the cost stated plainly? The platform guidance does not establish a universal fair price or effectiveness benchmark.
Paid playlist placement is not automatically safe simply because a playlist looks real. Avoid services that charge just to be considered for user playlists, and do not confuse a transparent campaign with a guaranteed placement. The relevant question is what the provider actually does and whether it relies on authentic discovery rather than inflated plays.
How to spot suspicious activity without jumping to conclusions
Review platform analytics for patterns that do not fit your campaign or audience. Spotify and IMPALA identify warning signs that can merit investigation:

- A sudden, unexplained spike in streams or a short-lived burst that fades quickly.
- Unexpected listener geography or traffic from sources that do not make sense.
- A rapid follower increase, or streams rising far faster than listener growth.
- Playlist activity that does not fit your audience, genre or normal listening pattern.
- Engagement that does not match the stream count.
These are prompts to investigate, not proof by themselves. A genuine post, event, press mention or other campaign can also create a spike. Compare the timing and source of activity with what you actually did, and look for several signals together before drawing conclusions. IMPALA’s April 2024 streaming-manipulation guidance discusses patterns, sources, geography and engagement. It also reports that a January 2024 Pex study counted over 1 million modified audio tracks on digital service providers; that figure concerns modified audio tracks, not artificial streams and not proof that every track was fraudulent.

- Save the evidence. Keep dated records of campaign spending, provider communications, placements, screenshots and relevant audience activity.
- Contact your label or distributor. Share the playlist details and your records, particularly if you did not arrange the placement.
- Report it through the platform. Spotify advises reporting the playlist through its official reporting route; IMPALA recommends using the relevant digital service provider’s reporting channel.
- Stop any questionable campaign. Do not encourage fans to loop tracks, use extra accounts, coordinate inauthentic plays or follow supposed tactics for evading detection. Spotify advises artists to encourage real listening and discourage coordinated or automated manipulation.
Spotify also addresses the case of an artist being placed on a playlist that is artificially streamed without their consent in its official guidance. Preserve your records and report what happened rather than trying to counteract suspicious activity with more streams.

What the published figures do—and do not—tell artists
The cited platform and industry guidance does not establish a generally applicable success rate, expected stream count or typical budget for legitimate promotion. Treat any provider’s numbers as claims to verify, not a standard you should expect.
IMPALA’s April 2024 guidance reported that Spotify had begun charging labels and distributors a €10 monthly penalty for each track deemed to have significant artificial-streaming activity in April 2024. This is a dated account of the policy at that time, not a guarantee of current fee terms. Spotify’s artist guidance describes a per-track charge for flagrant artificial streaming but does not state an amount on the reviewed page.
