On Spotify, confirmed artificial streams may be excluded from royalties and public counts, while more serious cases can lead to playlist removal or action against the track or distributor. The exact response depends on the service and the case; artists who believe their streams were genuine should contact their label or distributor and explain how they promoted the release.
What a flag can mean on Spotify
Spotify’s published guidance describes several possible consequences for confirmed artificial streaming. A flag or unusual activity is not, by itself, proof that an artist deliberately arranged it, and the guidance does not say every case receives the same penalty.
- Royalties: Spotify says royalties associated with confirmed artificial streams are withheld.
- Public numbers and charts: Spotify may correct public stream counts and prevent confirmed artificial streams from affecting charts or recommendation signals.
- Playlists and distribution: A track may be removed from playlists. Depending on severity, a distributor may issue a warning or charge, suspend an account, or remove the music.
- Track removal: Spotify says it may remove a track in severe cases.
These are possible outcomes, not a prediction that every flag will lead to all—or any—of the more serious actions. Spotify does not publish its complete detection methods or guarantee a particular result for an individual review. Spotify’s policy on artificial streaming and its artist guidance explain the actions it may take.
Why a dashboard spike does not prove royalties were earned
Private Spotify for Artists data and royalty reporting can tell different stories. Artificial activity may remain visible in private analytics after royalties are withheld and public counts adjusted; in other cases, the activity may be removed before it appears in the dashboard. A spike in the dashboard is therefore not evidence that those plays generated payable royalties.

For royalty information, Spotify identifies the label or distributor report as the most accurate source. Check the relevant statement rather than estimating earnings from a visible stream total. See Spotify for Artists’ artificial-streaming guidance and Spotify Support’s policy explanation.
What to do if you see suspicious activity or receive a notice
- Keep a record. Save the notice, the date, the track or release identifiers, and communications with your distributor or label. This is practical preparation, not a platform-published evidence checklist.
- Review the pattern, without treating it as proof. Spotify names sudden unexplained spikes, unexpected geographic concentration, unexplained sources such as “Other,” and a short-lived follower increase as signals worth investigating. These patterns can prompt questions; they do not establish who caused the activity.
- Contact your label or distributor. Explain the genuine promotion methods you used and provide details of any marketing service you hired. If the activity appears unsolicited, say so and share any playlist information you have. Spotify says a label or distributor can work with it to review a case where an artist believes the streams were authentic. See Spotify Support’s guidance.
- Report suspicious playlists through Spotify’s reporting route. Spotify for Artists provides a way to report playlists suspected of artificial streaming. For another service, follow that service’s own current reporting instructions; channels differ across platforms. IMPALA’s April 2024 guide for independent music companies gives cross-platform context, but platform contact details can change.
- Stop using services with unclear or guaranteed-stream methods. Do not encourage looping, bots, scripts, or coordinated inauthentic listening. If a paid service promises a guaranteed number of streams or playlist placement, stop and ask how it operates before continuing.
- Check the royalty statement. Use the report from your label or distributor to understand royalties rather than inferring payment from a dashboard total.
How the available guidance differs by service
| Service or source | What its guidance establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify | Confirmed artificial streams can have associated royalties withheld, public counts corrected, and chart or recommendation effects prevented. Other possible consequences vary by severity. Artists who believe streams were genuine should contact their label or distributor; suspicious playlists can also be reported. | A flag alone does not prove deliberate misconduct, and the published guidance does not disclose all detection methods or promise a particular review outcome. |
| Apple Music | Apple Music Provider Support describes daily and monthly reporting, payout-adjustment information, and human review before a suspected manipulation case results in a takedown. It warns providers against services that claim to increase plays for a fee. | The cited page is aimed at labels and distributors. It is not a full artist appeal guide and does not establish what happens in every flagged case. See Apple Music Provider Support. |
| Other services | IMPALA’s April 2024 guide says reporting channels differ by digital service provider and that resolution may involve exchanges among the platform, label, and distributor. | Spotify’s specific penalties and process should not be assumed to apply to other services. Use the service’s own current guidance. |
How to avoid risky promotion offers
Spotify prohibits third-party services that promise streams or playlist placement in exchange for money. It recommends checking a marketer’s methods and artist reviews. Apple Music Provider Support likewise says companies or individuals claiming they can increase Apple Music plays for a fee are not authorized by Apple. A paid campaign is not automatically artificial streaming, but guaranteed plays or placement are warning signs; ask what the provider actually does and avoid any service that relies on artificial listening.

The scale of manipulation estimates should not be confused with the likelihood that a particular artist will be flagged. Apple’s undated provider-support page says Apple Music’s stream-manipulation rate ranks among the lowest in the industry and is “well below 1%”; it does not state a measurement period, so that figure should not be read as a current rate. Separately, IMPALA reported in April 2024 that a January 2024 Pex study counted over 1 million modified audio tracks on digital service providers. That is a count of modified tracks, not a platform flag rate or a measure of an individual artist’s risk.
