Keep it private and offline, make a backup you can recover, and use trusted, current wallet software. A hardware wallet can reduce exposure to an internet-connected device, but it cannot protect a phrase that has been copied or disclosed.
What a recovery phrase does—and why it must stay secret
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase or mnemonic, is a backup used to restore a wallet. Treat it as a credential that can grant control of the wallet, not as routine account-recovery information. Do not send it to customer support, enter it on a website, or share it in a message. Bitcoin.org’s glossary and Ethereum.org’s security guidance explain the role of wallet recovery phrases and private keys.
A wallet provider or exchange may be able to help recover a custodial account, but that does not mean a self-custody wallet’s recovery phrase can be reset. In self-custody, the owner controls the keys and is responsible for preserving the backup; if the phrase or private key is lost, the funds may be unrecoverable. Ethereum.org’s wallet guidance distinguishes self-custody from accounts held by a service.
How to back up your wallet safely
- Follow the wallet’s official backup procedure when you create it. Wallets differ, so use the instructions for your specific wallet rather than assuming one universal recovery method.
- Record the phrase offline and accurately. Double-check the transcription. Do not photograph or screenshot it, save it in cloud storage, or type it into a website or message.
- Keep the backup private and physically secure. Choose locations that protect it from unauthorized access and foreseeable loss. Bitcoin.org recommends secure locations, more than one physical location, and durable storage media in its wallet-security guidance.
- Understand how recovery works without exposing the phrase. Use the wallet’s official recovery instructions; do not test a phrase by entering it into a website or sharing it with another person. The cited guidance does not prescribe a single verification procedure for every wallet.
Keeping copies in separate locations can reduce the chance that one event destroys the only backup, but each additional copy is another opportunity for someone to find it. Balance recoverability with access control.

Protect the devices and accounts around your wallet
For a mobile, desktop, or browser wallet
- Download wallet software only from a trusted source and keep it up to date.
- For a browser wallet, bookmark its genuine website to reduce the chance of following a phishing link.
- Remove browser extensions you do not use, and be selective about extensions that can read or change website data.
- Use a strong, unique wallet password. Bitcoin.org suggests a password generated by a password manager or a long passphrase made from randomly chosen words. This is advice about the wallet password—not a recommendation to put the recovery phrase in an online password manager.
- Keep only an amount appropriate for everyday use in a hot wallet. Bitcoin.org compares this to carrying limited cash in a physical wallet; consider a separate offline arrangement for savings.
For an exchange account
An exchange account is custodial: the provider controls custody, and any account recovery depends on its policies and security. Use strong multi-factor authentication where available. Ethereum.org warns that SMS-based two-factor authentication is vulnerable to SIM-jacking and recommends an authenticator app or security key as a stronger method. See its security guidance.
Before approving a transaction
Verify the entire destination address before sending funds. Address poisoning uses a lookalike address that may appear in transaction history, hoping you will copy it instead of the intended address. Bitcoin.org describes this scam in its scam-prevention guidance.

When a hardware wallet or cold storage makes sense
A hardware wallet keeps keys on a dedicated device and can limit the effect of a compromised connected computer. It does not make a disclosed recovery phrase safe, and users still need to check what the device displays before approving a transaction. Buy through the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, and generate the phrase yourself rather than accepting a phrase supplied by someone else. Bitcoin.org discusses hardware and offline wallets in its wallet-security guidance and counterfeit-device risks in its scam guidance.
Bitcoin.org describes offline signing as a setup in which a signing device stays offline while a separate online computer broadcasts the transaction. That separation can suit savings, but it adds setup and operating steps; a mobile wallet is more convenient for active use. These are broad categories, not product rankings or guarantees.

What to do if your recovery phrase may be exposed
Assume a phrase that has been photographed, copied, entered into a site, or shared is compromised. If you can still access the assets, move them to a newly generated wallet using a secure process and protect the new wallet’s phrase from the same exposure. Use official wallet instructions and take care not to disclose the new phrase while moving funds. Do not trust someone who promises recovery in exchange for an advance fee; fake support and recovery scams exploit the fear of losing access. Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance says legitimate support will not ask for a seed phrase or private key, and Ethereum.org likewise warns users never to share them.

Self-custody also means planning for what happens if you cannot access the wallet. Bitcoin Core’s Bitcoin Core guidance flags inheritance planning as part of responsible self-custody. Arrange for a trusted successor to locate instructions or backups if needed, while keeping the phrase inaccessible during ordinary life. Do not solve the handoff problem by casually sharing or storing the phrase online.
