Two Port Wakefield events, six years apart
The figures in coverage of the plant refer to different events. In February 2019, JBS reduced operations at the Primo-run abattoir from two shifts to one day shift. ABC reported that 36 full-time employees and 66 labour-hire workers lost their jobs: 102 in total. JBS said the change was intended to “align operations with supply and market conditions,” citing supply and market conditions, drought and higher feed costs. ABC News, 4 February 2019.
In June 2025, JBS announced that Seven Point Pork would cease operating at Port Wakefield in early January 2026, indefinitely. ABC reported that about 270 jobs were affected, including 160 workers living in the regional council area. That announcement was not another account of the 2019 shift cuts; it concerned a later planned cessation. JBS pork division chief operating officer Edison Alvares said the facility was “simply no longer viable as a pork processing facility in the short term.” JBS attributed the decision to a reduction in pigs from a key strategic partner and the unavailability of replacement pigs. What is known about South Australian pork supply
The 2025 report described changes in where some pork processing would take place. Coles said South Australia would remain its biggest state supplier of pork and that its partnership with Big River Pork in Murray Bridge would expand from 2026. This is a statement about Coles’s supply plans, not proof of current availability of a particular product or a direct-to-consumer sales channel.

Pork SA committee chair Greg Davis said South Australia had capacity to process all pigs produced in the state, while warning that some producers could face extra freight costs. That is an attributed industry view, not an independently measured capacity estimate. ABC News, 4 June 2025.
In South Australian Legislative Council Hansard on 4 June 2025, the Minister for Primary Industries described Seven Point Pork as one of the state’s two export-accredited pork abattoirs. The minister also said 46 PALM workers were scheduled to return home in October 2025; that records the plan stated at the time, not confirmation of what later happened. What “buy local pork” can mean for a shopper
The cited reporting supports checking two distinct things: the pork’s stated origin and whether a named processor is associated with it. A South Australian supplier or processor may be relevant to a shopper seeking local provenance, but the reporting does not identify particular retailers, products or current stock. Nor does it establish that Big River Pork sells directly to consumers.
Ask a retailer or check the package for the product’s stated origin and processor rather than assuming that pork sold in South Australia was raised or processed there. The cited sources do not compare prices, cuts, quality or environmental impacts, so they cannot establish whether local pork costs more or is otherwise preferable for an individual household budget.
