CSIR’s 2023 recruitment for 444 Section Officer (SO) and Assistant Section Officer (ASO) posts is closed: applications opened on 8 December 2023 and, after an extension, the portal remained open through 13 January 2024. This guide explains the vacancies, qualifications, pay levels and selection stages, and points to CSIR’s official page for later notices.

What was CSIR CASE-2023?

The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), an autonomous organization under India’s Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, advertised the posts under Combined Administrative Services Examination 2023 (CASE-2023), advertisement E-I/RC/2023/1. The detailed advertisement described the 444 vacancies as provisional and said the number could increase or decrease. Read CSIR’s detailed advertisement.

How many vacancies were there, and how did the posts differ?

CSIR advertised 76 SO posts and 368 ASO posts. Both roles were offered in the General, Finance & Accounts, and Stores & Purchase streams.

Post Vacancies Classification Pay level and scale
Section Officer (SO) 76 Group B Gazetted Level 8, Cell 1; ₹47,600–₹1,51,100
Assistant Section Officer (ASO) 368 Group B Non-Gazetted Level 7, Cell 1; ₹44,900–₹1,42,400

These figures and classifications are from CSIR’s 2023 detailed advertisement; the 2025 final-results notice also reports the vacancy totals. The notice’s pay figures are the listed pay scales, not a calculation of take-home pay.

What were the eligibility requirements?

The essential qualification for both posts was a university degree. The advertisement set an upper age limit of 33 years, subject to the conditions in the notice. Category-based age relaxations and all other eligibility conditions must be read in the full advertisement; the age limit should not be treated as a universal cutoff without those conditions.

What were the application dates?

CSIR’s detailed advertisement initially scheduled online applications from 8 December 2023 at 17:00 through 12 January 2024 at 17:00, with fee payment due by 14 January 2024 at 17:00. CSIR later extended the application deadline to 13 January 2024. Its final-results notice confirms the application portal was open from 8 December 2023 to 13 January 2024. The recruitment is historical, and these dates have passed. See the official CASE recruitment listing for the extension entry and subsequent updates.

How did the selection process work?

CSIR’s final-results notice describes a two-stage examination, followed by a different final assessment for each post:

  1. Stage I: Paper I and Paper II.
  2. Stage II: Paper III, plus a Computer Proficiency Test for ASO candidates.
  3. Final assessment: An interview for SO candidates.

The final-results notice reports that CSIR received 475,688 applications for the recruitment. This is the total reported by CSIR in its notice dated 2 January 2025, not a count of applicants who necessarily completed every selection stage. Read the final-results notice.

Where can candidates find results and later notices?

Use CSIR’s CASE recruitment page for official CASE-2023 updates. The page lists later developments, including empanelled-candidate marks and waiting-list operations. Consult the relevant CSIR notice for the status or instructions applicable to a particular candidate; the original application notice does not establish the current status of every waiting-list or empanelment case.
