More than 70 workers were affected when The Goose Beach Bar and Kitchen was destroyed by fire in Busselton in April 2021. A report published five days later said every staff member had found work with nearby businesses. That was a snapshot of the immediate response—not confirmation of where those workers work today.

What happened to The Goose workers after the fire?

PerthNow reported on 17 April 2021 that all of The Goose’s staff had found jobs at surrounding businesses within five days of the fire. The report said more than 70 workers were affected and described community posts on online noticeboards as part of how the local response took shape. The figures and outcome are the contemporary report’s account; it did not track the workers’ employment in later years.

The response also drew public support for the owners and staff. Busselton mayor Grant Henley said, “It has been immensely reassuring to see the outpouring of community support for the owners and staff.”

What happened in the fire?

The fire broke out in the early hours of 12 April 2021 at The Goose Beach Bar and Kitchen on Busselton’s foreshore, beside the Busselton Jetty. ABC News reported that 13 fire crews attended and 90 per cent of the building was destroyed.

The initial ABC report said the fire was not then being treated as suspicious, but investigators did not yet know its cause. A later report attributed to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) the finding that the fire was accidental and resulted from spontaneous combustion in a dryer. The two reports describe different points in the investigation timeline.

How much damage was reported, and was The Goose going to rebuild?

On 14 April 2021, ABC News reported that restaurant manager Tim Meikle estimated the damage at $5 million to $7 million. That was an estimate given shortly after the fire, not a final audited cost.

Owner Qi Eng said the business intended to rebuild and forecast that it would be closed for around 12 to 18 months. That was the expectation reported in April 2021, not a current estimate of closure time. The Goose’s official website now recounts that the fire left the building unsalvageable, describes food-trailer operations during the rebuild, and presents the venue as operating again at the foreshore.

What the five-day jobs report does—and does not—tell us

  • It records an immediate local response: PerthNow’s 17 April 2021 article said all staff had found work with nearby businesses within five days.
  • It is not a long-term employment record: the report does not establish the workers’ later jobs or circumstances.
  • It is not an audited workforce study: the reported count and hiring outcome should be understood as a contemporary news account, not a population statistic.

Meikle described the community’s role at the time: “In times of hardship like this, it’s the community that gets you through,”
