To buy a .se domain, check your exact name in Internetstiftelsen’s availability search, then register it through an authorized registrar if it is available and not blocked or reserved. You do not need to be a Swedish citizen or resident, but the name must comply with the registry’s rules and must not infringe anyone else’s rights.
How to buy a .se domain
- Search the exact name. Use Internetstiftelsen’s domain search to check whether the name is currently available. Availability can change, and some otherwise valid names are blocked or reserved.
- Choose an authorized registrar. Internetstiftelsen operates the .se registry, while authorized registrars handle customer registrations. Its registrar guide lets you sort providers by country of residence and by registration and technical services offered.
- Review the registrar’s terms and place the order. Check the current registration and renewal prices, registration term, included services, support, and transfer-out process on the registrar’s site before completing checkout.
Who can register a .se domain?
Anyone may register an eligible .se domain; Swedish citizenship or residence is not required. Under Internetstiftelsen’s terms, valid from January 15, 2026, the name must be available and absent from the registry’s block list, and the holder must provide full contact details and a working email address. Registration does not approve or clear the name for trademark or other legal rights. The holder remains responsible for ensuring the name does not conflict with law or infringe another party’s rights. See the .se and .nu terms.

Choosing a name that meets the rules
A .se domain label may contain 1–63 characters. Permitted characters include letters a–z, numbers and hyphens, as well as certain additional letters used in Swedish and other languages, including å, ä, ö, ü and é. Technical restrictions still apply, and some names are reserved or blocked. The registry says its blocked and reserved data files are generated daily, so check the exact spelling in the current search rather than relying on a general character rule. Internetstiftelsen’s rules and conditions page lists character and other restrictions.
Compare the total cost, not just the first-year offer
Internetstiftelsen’s registration guide does not set the consumer price you will pay. Retail prices and service terms are set by individual registrars, so compare the checkout terms directly. Registry-to-registrar fees are not customer prices: the registry’s registrar-facing information describes registration and renewal periods from 12 to 120 months, but that range does not establish a consumer plan or fee. See Registry Services’ registrar information for that distinction.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Compare the initial registration price with the renewal price and confirm how renewal is handled.
- Check the registration term and whether the registrar offers the DNS and other technical services you need.
- Review support options, account controls, and the steps and costs for transferring the domain out.
Changing your .se registrar
You can change registrars without changing the domain’s holder. Internetstiftelsen’s guide says to obtain an authorization code from your current registrar and provide it to the new registrar, which can assist with the transfer. Changing registrar is separate from changing ownership or moving a website; follow the providers’ instructions for any separate account, DNS or hosting migration.
