For a practical everyday watch, the first-generation Sinn 556 is the clearest pick in this shortlist: it arrived at the end of the decade and was produced from 2008 to 2010, according to Fratello. Other notable choices serve different purposes, from the technical 756 DIAPAL chronograph to the U1 diver and the multi-time-zone 6000. This is an attributed editorial selection, not an objective ranking—and the 6000 is included for context even though it launched before the 2000s.
How to read this shortlist
Jorg Weppelink’s March 5, 2022 Fratello guide selects a handful of notable Sinn watches rather than attempting to cover every model from the decade. The release dates and historical specifications below are attributed to that guide unless an official Sinn page is identified. In particular, a watch’s presence here does not necessarily mean it launched in the 2000s.

Everyday wear: first-generation Sinn 556
The 556 is the most straightforward choice here if you want a restrained, compact watch rather than a specialized chronograph or diver. Fratello dates its introduction to December 2007 and says the first generation was produced from 2008 through 2010.
For that first generation, Fratello reports a 38.5 mm diameter, 11 mm thickness, 45 mm lug-to-lug length, 20 mm lug width, 200 m water resistance, a date display, and an ETA 2824-2 movement. These are secondary-source historical specifications, not a factory specification sheet established here. The 556 range split into the 556 A and 556 I in 2011, so verify the exact reference and generation when comparing listings; do not assume every watch carrying “556” has identical details.
#1 Best Overall
- PT5000 Automatic Movement: ML20 uses a PT5000 automatic movement beating at 28,800 vph, with hand winding, hacking seconds, and date display for practical daily use. It gives the watch a smoother mechanical feel while keeping the layout simple and functional for buyers looking for a dependable automatic dive watch
- 200m Water Resistance: Rated to 200m / 20 ATM, ML20 is suitable for swimming, snorkeling, water activities, rain, and daily splashes. The screw-down crown and solid case construction help support the water resistant design, while the compact 39mm case keeps it wearable for office, travel, and regular everyday use
- Sapphire Crystal and BGW9 Lume: The sapphire crystal with inner AR coating helps improve dial clarity and daily scratch resistance. Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9 on the hands and indices creates a bright blue glow in low light, making the watch easier to read at night, indoors, or during early morning and evening wear
- 120-Click Rotating Bezel: The unidirectional 120-click diving bezel gives ML20 a crisp timing function for water use, short intervals, or daily tasks. The clean tool-watch design, fine sandblasted texture, and available brushed or PVD case options help it feel functional and solid without looking oversized
- Comfortable 39mm Case Fit: The 39mm case, 46mm lug-to-lug length, and 11.3mm thickness give ML20 a compact dive watch profile for many wrist sizes. The solid stainless steel bracelet tapers from 20mm to 16mm, and the 5-hole micro-adjust folding clasp helps fine tune the fit during the day for changing wrist comfort
Historical reissues: Sinn 155
The 155 has two distinct reissue stories in Fratello’s account. The first was a 200-piece Japan-market run in 2005. A later Manufactum edition followed in 2008; the guide describes it with a 43 mm case and a Valjoux 7750-based movement.
Fratello gives conflicting production quantities for the Manufactum edition—300 in one passage and 272 in another—so its edition size is not established by that article. Treat a seller’s claimed quantity as something to verify rather than a settled fact.
Rank #2
- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Travel and the financial-district line: 6000 and 6066
Sinn 6000 Finanzplatzuhr
The 6000 is a useful choice if simultaneous time-zone display matters. Fratello describes it as showing three time zones with a GMT hand and a rotating inner bezel. It dates the model’s introduction to 1999, which makes the 6000 a pre-decade inclusion—not a 2000s launch.
Sinn 6066 Frankfurt Finanzplatzwecker
Fratello dates the 6066 Frankfurt Finanzplatzwecker to 2004 and connects it to the financial-district line. That historical release date is attributed to the 2022 guide; no separate official launch document is established here.
Rank #3
- Case Width: 1.4 inches (36 mm)
- Wrist Circumference: 5.5 - 7.5 inches (140 - 190 mm)
- Automatic
- Day Date RPA2023 Skeleton Back
Timing-focused choices: 958 Fulda Challenge and 756 DIAPAL
Sinn 958 Fulda Challenge
Fratello identifies the 958 Fulda Challenge as a 2004 limited edition and reports a production run of 250. It describes a split-seconds chronograph and multiple timing scales. These release and edition details come from the secondary guide, not an official release document established here.
Sinn 756 DIAPAL
Sinn’s archive marks the 756 DIAPAL as no longer in the current collection. The archive says the DIAPAL technology was first developed in 2001 and describes a lubricant-free escapement. For the archived 756 DIAPAL configuration, Sinn lists TEGIMENT, dehumidifying technology, 20-bar pressure resistance, and magnetic-field protection up to 80,000 A/m. Exact features can vary across references and production history, so match the archive details to the specific watch being considered.
Rank #4
- AUTOMATIC MOVEMENT: Swiss H-10 movement with 80-hour reserve ensures consistent performance. Experience precision that matches both daily tasks and adventures, a testament to Swiss craftsmanship in automatic timekeeping.
- WATER RESISTANT TO 100M: Withstands 10 bar (100 meters), ideal for swimming and outdoor pursuits. Perfect for those who demand resilient accessories that accompany them confidently on their explorative journeys.
- BUILT FOR ADVENTURE: Featuring a 42mm stainless steel case, a black dial and leather strap, this watch combines durability and functionality. With Super-LumiNova and sapphire crystal, it’s ready to tackle your outdoor challenges.
- PREMIUM MATERIALS: Leather strap with pin buckle offers day-long comfort. The clean lines and sophisticated design make it the perfect accessory for both casual wear and formal attire, merging functionality with fashion.
- RICH HERITAGE: Over a century of Hamilton's legacy in field watches, admired for precision. Originally designed for WWI soldiers, these timepieces combine rugged durability with history, showcasing Hamilton's commitment to quality and innovation.
Dive-watch appeal: Sinn U1
The U1’s identity centers on its case material and dive-watch capability. Sinn’s current U1 page describes German submarine steel and a 100-bar/1,000-metre pressure-resistance rating certified by an independent institute. Those are current product-page specifications; they should not be assumed to describe every U1 version from the 2000s.
What to check before buying a pre-owned example
These models differ enough that the right choice depends first on intended use: compact everyday wear (556), historical reissue interest (155), time-zone display (6000), timing functions (958 or 756 DIAPAL), or dive-watch character (U1). For a particular listing, assess the watch itself and the quality of its documentation rather than relying on the model name alone.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the exact reference and, for a 556, the generation and whether it is a 556 A or 556 I.
- Compare the case dimensions and movement stated for the specific reference with the seller’s description.
- Ask for service records and assess condition, originality, and whether components have been replaced.
- For a limited edition, seek documentation for any claimed production quantity; this matters especially for the 155 Manufactum, whose quantity is inconsistent in the cited guide.
- Review the seller’s return terms and the condition of the watch before committing.
No current market-price or investment-performance comparison is established for these models, so this shortlist cannot support a claim that one is the best financial purchase.
