ButcherBox announced on May 2, 2024, that it had acquired Truffle Shuffle, a startup known for virtual cooking classes, gourmet ingredient kits and truffle products. The purchase price was not disclosed. TechCrunch reported that the offer was cash-only, citing confirmation from a ButcherBox spokesperson. The deal’s stated purpose was to add cooking instruction to ButcherBox’s protein-delivery business—not to publish a new financial product or service.
What did ButcherBox acquire?
Truffle Shuffle was described in the ButcherBox acquisition announcement as a virtual cook-along platform founded by Jason McKinney and Tyler Vorce, former chefs at The French Laundry. Its offerings included live cooking instruction, dishes ranging from pan-seared ribeye to homemade pasta, cooking-skills lessons and gourmet ingredient kits.
The businesses had different roles: ButcherBox delivered protein and food products, while Truffle Shuffle centered on teaching customers how to cook and providing ingredients for guided experiences. The announcement also connected Truffle Shuffle with truffle products.
Why did ButcherBox buy Truffle Shuffle?
ButcherBox presented the acquisition as a way to extend its food business into cooking education. Founder and CEO Mike Salguero said: “As a brand, our purpose is to help people eat better and while we’ve been focused on helping people eat higher-quality protein, now through the Truffle Shuffle integration, we can inspire and educate the way they are preparing our proteins too.”

TechCrunch described the transaction as ButcherBox’s first acquisition and placed it in the company’s effort to expand its “Just Cook” recipe and cooking-education content. In strategic terms, the deal joined ButcherBox’s protein offering with instruction intended to help customers prepare it; the cited announcement and reporting did not disclose a financial return target or other deal rationale beyond that customer-facing strategy.
What were the financial terms?
The acquisition price was not disclosed. TechCrunch reported that a ButcherBox spokesperson confirmed the offer was cash-only. That does not establish the amount paid, the transaction’s valuation, or any other detailed terms.

How does Shark Tank fit in?
McKinney and Vorce appeared on Shark Tank in April 2021 and reached a deal with Mark Cuban, according to ButcherBox’s acquisition announcement. The company said Cuban received an 18 percent stake. That percentage is the announcement’s account of the Shark Tank deal, rather than independently verified deal documentation.
In a 2023 video transcript included as an exhibit to Truffle Shuffle’s SEC Form C filing, the founders described the Shark Tank deal as $501,000. The same transcript contains their company-reported claims that nearly 150,000 people had cooked with Truffle Shuffle and that more than 99,000 orders had shipped. At the time of the May 2024 announcement, ButcherBox said Truffle Shuffle would continue under its own brand and that its cooking-content library would become available to ButcherBox customers. That was the announced plan; it does not verify that the brand remains independently operated, that classes are currently available, or that any particular kit or product is in stock as of October 8, 2026. The cited sources do not establish those current operating details.
