Boxing’s biggest stars can earn far more per bout than UFC fighters, but available public evidence does not show whether the typical professional boxer earns more than the typical UFC fighter. The answer changes depending on whether “paid more” means a star’s earning ceiling, typical bout compensation, annual income, or a share of event revenue. Those measures are not interchangeable.
What “paid more” means
A fighter’s earnings can be compared in several ways. A large headline purse for one star does not establish what most athletes in that sport earn, and a fighter’s share of promotion revenue is not the same as the amount an individual takes home.
| Meaning of “paid more” | What a fair comparison requires | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Highest earning potential | Top fighters’ event guarantees and revenue participation | Superstar outliers do not represent typical boxers or UFC fighters. |
| Typical fighter pay | Median total compensation over the same period and geography | Public purse disclosures can omit payments, and the reviewed UFC median is historical. |
| Pay per bout | All guaranteed and contingent compensation tied to each bout | A disclosed purse may not include side agreements or discretionary payments. |
| Share of revenue | Fighter compensation divided by consistently defined promotion or event revenue | Historical estimates may use different scopes and accounting definitions. |
| Annual earnings | All bout income over a year, bout frequency, and other fighter income | A per-fight figure alone does not determine yearly income. |
Why boxing has the higher star ceiling
At the top of the sport, boxing offers the potential for exceptionally large per-bout earnings. That is a comparison of the earning ceiling, not proof that boxers as a group—or the median boxer—earn more than UFC fighters. Headline purses for prominent bouts also should not be mistaken for typical compensation.
What the available revenue-share figures say—and do not say
A 2024 MMA Fighting report described figures from a historical Mercer comparison: 18.6% of total UFC revenue went to fighter compensation, compared with 62.5% for boxing. The report said the one-sheet was believed to be associated with the study, but it was not identified as part of the full study and its context was unknown. Treat these as reported historical estimates, not current or definitive shares across every promotion or fighter.

A 2025 complaint in Cirkunovs v. Zuffa alleges that UFC fighters receive less than 20% of bout revenue. That is a litigant’s allegation, not a court finding. It cannot establish a settled, current comparison with boxing.
Even a reliable promotion-wide revenue share would not tell you what a particular athlete earns. The calculation depends on which revenue and compensation are included, and how they are defined. It also does not show how earnings are distributed among stars, established fighters, and newcomers.

What historical UFC payout data can tell you
A UFC antitrust plaintiffs’ analysis covered disclosed purses for 44 of 130 UFC events held from 2013 through 2015. In that limited sample, the reported mean bout payout was $47,536 and the median was $22,000. Including publicly reported performance bonuses, the mean was $56,804 and the median was $25,000.
These are figures from a partial, historical sample—not estimates of current UFC pay or a direct comparison with boxers. The analysis says it excludes undisclosed compensation such as pay-per-view bonuses, discretionary bonuses, and side letters. Commission disclosures may also show only the contractual guarantee for a bout.

Why boxing purses are not fully visible either
The federal Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act requires promoters to file written boxer agreements and specified purse-related fee information with the relevant commission, and to provide certain promoter compensation and fee details to the boxer. It generally restricts public disclosure of promoter-furnished information, with exceptions for legal, administrative, or judicial proceedings. State rules and practices also affect what the public can see.
That means disclosure requirements should not be confused with universal public access to every boxer’s complete compensation. Nor do disclosed amounts necessarily make boxing and UFC records comparable: the populations, years, payment categories, and reporting practices can differ.

Is there a reliable answer for the typical fighter?
No current, comprehensive, apples-to-apples median earnings comparison is established by the available public sources. A useful comparison would need to cover the same years and geography and include guarantees, bonuses, pay-per-view participation, side agreements, and other bout-related compensation for both groups.
Annual income would require still more information, including how often fighters compete and income beyond bout pay. Without matched data, it is not sound to declare that the typical boxer or typical UFC fighter earns more.
