Boeing announced on October 11, 2024, that it planned to reduce its total workforce by roughly 10% over the coming months. CEO Kelly Ortberg said the reductions would include executives, managers and employees. Boeing did not give a final job count or identify which locations or business units would be affected.
What did Boeing announce?
In an employee message, Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg said, “Over the coming months, we are planning to reduce the size of our total workforce by roughly 10 percent.” He described the plan as part of a broader company reset, not as a completed reduction.
The announcement did not specify a number of positions, occupations, sites, countries or business units. Boeing said leaders would provide more tailored information about organizational effects the following week. It also said the planned reduction meant it would not proceed with the next cycle of furloughs.
Why is Boeing cutting its workforce?
Ortberg said Boeing needed structural change to address a difficult business position, stay competitive and deliver for customers over the long term. He said the company would focus resources on core areas rather than spread effort across too many activities. His stated rationale was to align staffing with financial reality and more focused priorities; this was management’s explanation for the plan.

What challenges were happening at Boeing?
Boeing announced the workforce plan alongside program and production difficulties. The company did not quantify how much any one of these issues contributed to the staffing decision.
- 777X: Boeing said development challenges, a flight-test pause and the ongoing work stoppage would delay the program, with first delivery then expected in 2026.
- 767 freighters: Boeing planned to complete remaining customer orders and end commercial 767 freighter production in 2027. Production of the KC-46A tanker was to continue.
- Defense development: Ortberg said performance on fixed-price development programs in Boeing Defense, Space & Security was below expectations. He anticipated substantial quarterly losses in the segment, which he attributed to the work stoppage on commercial derivatives, ongoing program challenges and the planned end of 767 freighter production.
- Production and deliveries: Boeing’s SEC filing described cash outflows from slower commercial production and deliveries after safety and quality improvement actions following the January 5, 2024 Alaska Airlines accident, as well as supply-chain constraints. It said the IAM District 751 work stoppage, which began September 13, 2024, paused production of certain aircraft and reduced deliveries. Boeing’s SEC filing
What did Boeing’s financial figures show at the time?
In an October 11, 2024 preliminary third-quarter release, Boeing estimated revenue of $17.8 billion, a GAAP loss of $9.97 per share, operating cash flow of negative $1.3 billion, and $10.5 billion in cash and investments in marketable securities at quarter-end. Boeing labeled these figures preliminary and unaudited, subject to completion and change. They were forecasts at the time, not final third-quarter results. Boeing’s preliminary release

The same release anticipated $3.0 billion in pre-tax charges on the 777X and 767 programs and $2.0 billion on named Defense, Space & Security programs. Those were program charges, not the stated cost of the workforce reductions. Separately, Boeing’s SEC filing reported $8.6 billion in net cash used by operating activities for the nine months ended September 30, 2024, and $10.5 billion in cash and short-term investments at that date.

The official sources cited here do not establish a final number of positions eliminated under the October 2024 plan. The roughly 10% figure was an announced target, not proof that the reduction was completed. In January 2025, Boeing said its fourth-quarter financials reflected “costs associated with workforce reductions announced last year,” but it did not state how many workers were affected. Boeing later reported 181,984 employees in December 2025. Its published counts include full-time and part-time employees, contingent labor, employees on leaves of absence of 90 days or less, and subsidiary workforces, and are net of additions and reductions. That snapshot cannot isolate positions removed by the October 2024 plan or establish whether it was completed, reversed or offset by hiring. Boeing company information
