The best crypto platform depends on what you need it to do. Coinbase is the strongest all-around choice for most U.S. beginners, while Kraken is better suited to active traders who want a published Pro fee schedule. Fidelity Crypto fits existing Fidelity customers, River is purpose-built for Bitcoin and recurring buys, and Cash App is convenient if you only need simple Bitcoin payments and purchases.
This ranking is for U.S. retail users and was checked on August 8, 2026. Availability, supported coins, fees, transfer limits, and legal status can vary by state and can change. A low advertised trading fee does not necessarily mean a low total cost: spreads, network charges, deposit fees, withdrawal fees, and execution quality also matter.
Quick comparison
| Rank | Platform | Best for | Important cost or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Coinbase | Best overall and best for beginners moving into advanced trading | The simple interface uses fixed-price quotes; Coinbase Advanced uses volume-based maker/taker pricing. |
| 2 | Kraken | Active traders and security-conscious users | Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker; consumer-app pricing is different. |
| 3 | Gemini | Security-focused users and regulated custody | ActiveTrader starts at 0.60% maker / 1.20% taker at the lowest-volume tier. |
| 4 | Robinhood Crypto | Investors who want crypto beside stocks and ETFs | Eligible exchange-routed orders use fee tiers from 0.00% to 0.95%; routing and spreads matter. |
| 5 | Fidelity Crypto | Existing Fidelity customers and traditional portfolios | Only five listed assets: BTC, ETH, FIDD, LTC, and SOL. |
| 6 | Crypto.com App | Mobile users wanting a broad ecosystem | The U.S. app advertises 400+ cryptocurrencies, but availability depends on product and jurisdiction. |
| 7 | Cash App Bitcoin | Simple Bitcoin purchases, payments, and recurring buys | It is a Bitcoin product, not a general altcoin exchange. Ordinary purchases can incur fees and spreads. |
| 8 | River | Bitcoin-only investing and automated dollar-cost averaging | One-time orders up to $1 million carry a 1.00% fee; some recurring purchases become fee-free. |
| 9 | Uphold | Converting between supported assets and fiat | Typical U.S. spreads are about 1.8%–1.95% for BTC and ETH and 2.55%–3.10% for altcoins. |
| 10 | Bitstamp | Users wanting an established, relatively focused exchange | Check the live retail schedule; the available published VIP schedule does not establish every U.S. retail fee. |
1. Coinbase: best overall
Coinbase is the most broadly useful choice on this list. Its basic interface is easier for a first purchase, while Coinbase Advanced gives users an order book, more order types, and volume-based maker/taker pricing when they are ready for a more technical workflow.
That separation is important for comparing costs. The simple Coinbase interface is not automatically the cheapest option. It presents fixed-price quotes, and the quote can include a spread. Coinbase Advanced uses its own trading-fee schedule, which depends on trading volume and whether an order adds or removes liquidity. Users should review the complete fee shown after signing in and before confirming a transaction.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Coinbase is also a practical choice for people who may eventually transfer crypto to a private wallet or use more advanced trading tools. Before sending, confirm the supported asset and network. A platform may support an asset for buying without supporting every deposit or withdrawal network for it.
Best for
Beginners who want a straightforward purchase screen but do not want to change providers if their needs become more advanced.
Watch-outs
- Do not compare Coinbase’s simple quoted price directly with Coinbase Advanced’s maker/taker commission without including the spread and execution price.
- Fees, payment methods, limits, and asset availability can vary by account and state.
2. Kraken: best for active traders
Kraken is a strong fit for investors who care about trading tools, a published Pro fee structure, and security disclosures. Kraken Pro’s current entry tier is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker. Rates decline at higher qualifying tiers, based on the better of 30-day spot trading volume or assets held on the platform under the current schedule.
A maker order adds liquidity to the order book; a taker order executes against an existing order. The difference matters more to frequent traders than to someone making one occasional purchase. Kraken’s consumer app is not the same product as Kraken Pro, so its Pro rates should not be presented as the price of every Kraken transaction.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Kraken also publishes information about custody and its proof-of-reserves process. That transparency is useful, but proof of reserves is not a universal solvency audit or a guarantee that customers cannot lose money. Kraken itself notes that there are no formally accepted universal proof-of-reserves procedures covering all liabilities.
Best for
Active traders who understand order types and want a platform with a clear distinction between consumer and Pro trading.
Watch-outs
- Include spread, funding costs, and withdrawal charges when calculating the real cost.
- Do not assume Kraken Pro and the consumer app have identical pricing.
3. Gemini: best for security-conscious users
Gemini emphasizes security and regulated custody. The company says it is SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2, and ISO 27001 certified and conducts annual penetration testing. Those controls can make Gemini appealing to users who place more weight on operational security than on having the lowest possible trading fee.
For users trading through ActiveTrader, the schedule effective July 9, 2026 lists the lowest-volume spot tier at 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker. This is higher than the starting Kraken Pro rates. Partially matched orders can also incur both taker and maker fees, so an order’s execution pattern matters.
Gemini’s insurance and custody descriptions should be read narrowly. They apply to specified risks, custody arrangements, or wallet assets and do not mean every account balance or every type of loss is universally insured.
Best for
Users who want a security-focused provider and are willing to accept potentially higher trading costs.
Watch-outs
Check the current ActiveTrader schedule and the fee preview before trading. A security certification is not the same thing as protection against market losses, user error, or every form of theft.
4. Robinhood Crypto: best alongside stocks and ETFs
Robinhood Crypto is convenient if your investments already live in Robinhood. It keeps crypto alongside stocks and ETFs, which can make account management simpler for a basic buy-and-hold strategy.

Its crypto fee model is more complicated than the old “commission-free” description suggests. Eligible exchange-routed orders now have fee tiers ranging from 0.00% to 0.95%. In the app, open Account → Settings → Crypto → Fee tiers to see the applicable setting. Standard trades generally use market-maker routing. On Robinhood Legend, orders use smart exchange routing; on web classic, orders use market-maker routing. Maker/taker pricing is still being introduced and may not be available to every customer.
Market and stop orders are always charged the taker rate. Limit and stop-limit orders may receive maker or taker treatment depending on whether they execute immediately.
There is also a settlement issue when selling. Sale proceeds may be immediately available to buy stocks, options, or more crypto, but transferring the money to a bank remains subject to ACH settlement, which Robinhood says can take up to five business days. Check Account → Transfers → Pending deposits if a withdrawal is delayed.
Best for
Existing Robinhood customers making relatively simple crypto trades and wanting one consolidated investing app.
Watch-outs
- Do not call Robinhood crypto universally commission-free.
- When transferring crypto in, Robinhood does not receive the original cost basis or acquisition date. It initially estimates a zero cost basis and the received date. You can correct it through View details → Add cost basis → Save → Done.
- Crypto transfers may require verification for up to five business days.
5. Fidelity Crypto: best for existing Fidelity customers
Fidelity Crypto is a natural option for someone who already uses Fidelity for retirement accounts, brokerage investments, or cash management. It is available through Fidelity.com and the Fidelity Investments app, allowing crypto to sit within a familiar traditional-finance environment.
The trade-off is a narrow asset list. Fidelity’s current page lists Bitcoin, Ethereum, Fidelity Digital Dollar (FIDD), Litecoin, and Solana. It is therefore not a suitable choice for someone seeking a large selection of altcoins or a broad token marketplace.
Fidelity says crypto is held in cold-vaulted storage and monitored around the clock. That describes the custody model, not protection against a decline in the value of crypto. As with any platform, check whether you can withdraw the particular asset and whether the desired network is supported before buying.
Best for
Fidelity customers who want a small selection of major crypto assets in the same financial ecosystem as their other investments.
Watch-outs
Eligibility requires being a U.S. citizen over 18 and living in a state served by Fidelity Digital Assets. Fidelity Crypto is not a full substitute for a multi-asset exchange.
6. Crypto.com App: best broad mobile ecosystem
The U.S. Crypto.com App advertises more than 400 cryptocurrencies, over 20 supported fiat currencies, zero-fee USD deposits, a Visa Card, and additional rewards products. That makes it one of the more feature-rich mobile ecosystems for users who want to buy, hold, spend, and explore a wider selection of assets.
The product distinction matters. The cited availability claims apply to the U.S. app, not automatically to the separate Crypto.com Exchange or every international feature. A coin or service may be available in one product or jurisdiction and unavailable in another. Banking providers can also impose their own fees.
Best for
Mobile-first users who value a broad asset selection and card or spending features more than a minimalist trading interface.

Watch-outs
Confirm the exact U.S. app feature, coin, network, and fee before depositing. Do not assume that “400+ cryptocurrencies” means every asset can be bought, withdrawn, or used with every Crypto.com product.
7. Cash App Bitcoin: best for simple Bitcoin use
Cash App is useful when the goal is simply to buy, sell, send, or receive Bitcoin through an app you already use for payments. To buy, open the Bitcoin tab → Buy, enter the amount, and confirm. Cash App supports both on-chain and Lightning transfers.
It is not a general-purpose altcoin exchange. Cash App’s Bitcoin materials position the product around Bitcoin rather than memecoins or other risky tokens.
Ordinary market-purchase fees vary by transaction size. The current published table lists:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Transaction size | Published fee |
|---|---|
| $1–$499 | 2.0% |
| $500–$999 | 1.5% |
| $1,000–$1,999 | 0.9% |
| $2,000 or more | 0% |
Spreads may still apply depending on the product. Certain features, including eligible Auto Invest, Round Ups, direct-deposit conversions, and some purchases above $2,000, may have different pricing.
Best for
People who want a simple Bitcoin purchase or payment without opening a dedicated multi-coin exchange account.
Watch-outs
Cash App’s Bitcoin product is a non-bank, non-deposit product and is not FDIC-insured. Bitcoin itself is not FDIC-insured simply because it is accessible through a financial app.
8. River: best for Bitcoin dollar-cost averaging
River focuses on Bitcoin rather than trying to be a marketplace for every token. Its appeal is strongest for investors who want recurring purchases, custody, and Bitcoin payment functionality in one place.
River’s current schedule lists a 1.00% fee for one-time orders up to $1 million. Direct-deposit conversions and recurring buys can be fee-free after the applicable initial period. Daily or hourly recurring purchases become zero-fee from the eighth day onward; weekly purchases become zero-fee from the second order onward.
There is a cash-flow detail worth noticing: River’s terms say recurring-order bank debits may occur up to one week before the scheduled purchase. Keep enough money in the linked bank account earlier than the displayed execution date.
Best for
Bitcoin-only investors who want to automate a recurring buying plan and do not need altcoins.
Watch-outs
- A 1.00% one-time-order fee is meaningful on occasional purchases, so recurring schedules may be more economical for a suitable investor.
- Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed or canceled once completed or pending.
- River says qualifying cash at a partner bank may receive FDIC insurance, but that does not protect against Bitcoin losses, theft, fraud, or River’s failure.
9. Uphold: best for asset-to-asset conversions
Uphold’s distinguishing feature is its “anything-to-anything” model, which lets users convert directly between supported assets rather than first converting to dollars. That can be convenient for someone moving between crypto, fiat, and other supported assets.

The convenience is reflected in the quoted spread. Uphold’s current U.S. schedule lists typical spreads of 1.8%–1.95% for Bitcoin and Ethereum, 2.55%–3.10% for altcoins, and less than 0.25% for most stablecoins, subject to conditions. The quoted price includes the spread, which can widen during volatility or when liquidity is low.
For most crypto networks, Uphold lists a $0.99 withdrawal fee in addition to applicable network fees. It also distinguishes between assets that can be bought or held and assets that can actually be deposited or withdrawn. Sending an unsupported asset or using an unsupported network can permanently lose the funds.
Best for
Users who prioritize straightforward conversions between supported assets and accept spread-based pricing.
Watch-outs
Compare the final quote—not just a headline fee—with another platform. Review deposit and withdrawal support for the specific asset and network before transferring.

Bitstamp belongs on the shortlist for users who prefer an established exchange with a relatively focused product rather than a large mobile rewards ecosystem. Its published VIP program shows volume-based maker/taker pricing, with standard pricing presented separately from high-volume tiers.
However, the available published document is a VIP fee schedule. It does not, by itself, establish the current retail fee for every U.S. trading pair, payment method, or account. That makes Bitstamp harder to compare using one headline percentage.
Best for
Users who value an established exchange and are prepared to review the live fee schedule before funding or trading.
Watch-outs
Do not copy an old Bitstamp retail fee table into a comparison. Check the current rate for the pair, order type, funding method, and withdrawal you plan to use.
How to choose a crypto exchange or app
1. Decide whether you need an exchange, broker, payment app, or custodian
These categories overlap but are not identical. Coinbase Advanced, Kraken Pro, Gemini ActiveTrader, and Bitstamp are exchange-style trading environments. Robinhood and Fidelity integrate crypto with broader investment accounts. Cash App is primarily a payments app with Bitcoin functionality. River is a Bitcoin-focused buying and custody service. The right choice depends on whether you need an order book, recurring purchases, payments, or self-custody withdrawals.
2. Calculate the all-in cost
Before confirming a purchase, look for:
- Trading commission or maker/taker fee
- Spread between the quoted buy and sell prices
- ACH, debit-card, wire, or payment-processing charges
- Crypto withdrawal fee and blockchain network fee
- Any account, custody, or recurring-buy charge
A platform advertising zero commission can still be more expensive if its spread or execution price is less favorable. Conversely, a visible trading fee may be reasonable if the order book is liquid and the spread is narrow.
3. Check withdrawals before depositing
If you plan to hold crypto in a hardware wallet, verify that the platform permits withdrawals for the exact asset and network. Also check minimums, daily limits, review periods, and whether a memo or tag is required. A coin being listed for purchase does not guarantee that it can be deposited or withdrawn.
4. Review settlement and verification delays
New accounts, bank deposits, crypto sales, and transfers may trigger holds. Do not invest money that you need immediately. Robinhood, for example, says crypto-sale proceeds can be available for additional purchases before an ACH withdrawal is settled, with bank withdrawals taking up to five business days. Crypto-transfer verification can also take several days in some cases.

5. Keep tax records separately
Buying crypto is not generally the same as selling it for tax purposes, but selling, swapping, and spending can create reportable transactions. Transferring crypto between providers can also complicate records. Robinhood says transferred-in crypto arrives without the original cost basis and acquisition date unless the user adds that information manually. Keep transaction histories, fees, transfer records, and original purchase dates.
6. Treat security features as essential
Use a unique password, an authenticator-based two-factor method where available, withdrawal protections, and a hardware wallet for long-term self-custody if you understand the responsibility. Check the platform’s custody and insurance language carefully. FDIC insurance generally applies to qualifying bank deposits, not to the market value of crypto. Proof of reserves, where offered, does not prove that all liabilities are covered.
Are crypto exchanges safe?
No exchange eliminates the risks of crypto investing. There are at least four separate risks:
- Market risk: the asset can lose substantial value.
- Platform risk: an exchange or custodian can restrict withdrawals, fail, or suffer an attack.
- Transaction risk: a wrong address, unsupported network, or missing memo can permanently lose funds.
- Account risk: phishing, weak passwords, SIM-swap attacks, and unauthorized access can compromise an account.
Crypto transfers are generally irreversible. Send a small test amount first when practical, verify the address on the device you are using, and never rely only on a copied address without checking it. Confirm the network on both sides before approving a withdrawal.

Our ranking criteria
We ranked these platforms for U.S. retail readers using more than coin count. The comparison considers state availability, supported assets and networks, standard versus advanced trading costs, spread transparency, funding and withdrawal charges, self-custody support, recurring buys, security controls, insurance scope, tax-record handling, settlement delays, and the type of financial product being offered.
Because crypto products change quickly, treat the fee and availability information above as a starting point. Review the provider’s current confirmation screen, terms, fee schedule, and state-specific disclosures before transferring money.
FAQ
Which crypto exchange is best for beginners in 2026?
Coinbase is the strongest general choice for beginners because its basic interface is straightforward and Coinbase Advanced is available when a user wants an order book and volume-based trading fees. Beginners should still compare the quoted spread and final fee before confirming a purchase.
What is the cheapest crypto exchange?
There is no single cheapest platform for every transaction. Kraken Pro currently starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, while other services may advertise lower commissions but include a wider spread or use different routing. Compare the final quote, trading fee, funding cost, and withdrawal charge for the exact trade.
Is crypto FDIC-insured?
Crypto itself is not FDIC-insured merely because it is held through an app. Qualifying cash held at a partner bank may have separate FDIC coverage, depending on the provider and account structure. That coverage does not generally protect against a fall in crypto’s price, a lost transfer, theft, or fraud.
Can I transfer crypto from an exchange to my own wallet?
Some platforms support self-custody withdrawals, but support varies by asset, network, account status, and jurisdiction. Confirm the exact network, address, memo or tag, minimum, and fee before sending. Crypto transfers are generally irreversible, and an incompatible network or wrong address can permanently lose the funds.
The Bottom Line
For most U.S. beginners, Coinbase is the best overall starting point because it combines a simple buying experience with a separate advanced platform. Choose Kraken Pro or Gemini ActiveTrader if trading structure and security disclosures matter more than convenience. Fidelity is a good fit for existing Fidelity customers, while Cash App and River make more sense for Bitcoin-only use. Crypto.com and Uphold offer broader asset ecosystems, but their availability, spreads, and withdrawal support require closer checking.
Whichever platform you choose, compare the all-in cost and confirm withdrawal rules before depositing. Keep emergency savings and near-term bills outside crypto, use strong account security, and treat every blockchain transfer as permanent.
