Palantir Technologies is a software company that builds platforms for connecting an organization’s data to analysis, decisions, and operational workflows. Rather than functioning only as a dashboard, its software is designed to bring data from different systems into a shared operational model, then support applications, analytics, and actions around that model.

How Palantir’s platform works

Palantir describes its architecture as a connected set of services: organizations connect and manage data, represent important concepts and relationships, apply business logic or analytical models, and use applications or workflows to help people act on the results. In plain terms, it aims to link information to the work an organization needs to do with it.

Palantir’s architecture documentation groups capabilities into data services, logic services, workflow services, and applications. Data services cover connectivity, transformation, virtualization, storage, health monitoring, and management. Logic services include business rules, machine-learning models, and generative AI integrations. Workflow services support interactive analysis as well as scheduled or event-driven automation. Applications and agents can work with modeled information subject to configured governance and security controls. These are the company’s descriptions of its architecture; not every customer deployment necessarily uses every component or produces the same results.

The Ontology connects data to organizational context

A central concept is the Ontology: Palantir’s model of the objects, relationships, logic, and actions that matter to an organization. It gives data a business or operational context—for example, the concepts users work with and the actions they may need to take—so applications and workflows can be built around them. It is broader than a database and is not itself an autonomous AI model.

From connected data to action

  1. Connect and manage information. Data from relevant systems is brought into the platform, where it can be transformed, virtualized, stored, and monitored.
  2. Model the work. The Ontology represents relevant organizational concepts and their relationships, alongside the logic and actions associated with them.
  3. Build analysis and workflows. Users can develop analytics, applications, and processes that work with the modeled information.
  4. Use results in operations. People, applications, or configured automations can use the resulting information to support or carry out tasks, subject to the organization’s permissions and governance.

This is Palantir’s account of how the architecture is intended to work, not an independent assessment of a specific implementation’s performance.

What each Palantir platform does

Product or capability Primary role
Foundry Data operations, data management, logic authoring, Ontology development, analytics, and workflow development.
Ontology A model that connects data, organizational concepts, logic, and actions.
AIP Generative AI capabilities, including connectivity to large language models, tools for building agents and automations, AI-enabled applications, and evaluations for governing AI workflows in production.
Apollo Software delivery and operations: Palantir says it manages the underlying infrastructure for Foundry and AIP services and orchestrates software upgrades across varied environments.
Gotham A platform associated particularly with defense and intelligence missions, integrated with Palantir’s broader platform architecture.

Palantir’s 2025 Form 10-K describes Gotham as helping integrate information across domains and sensors and support operational decision-making. The filing also describes Apollo as cloud-agnostic. These are company statements about product design and purpose, not independent comparative findings.

Who uses Palantir and for what

Palantir says it began with software for the U.S. intelligence community and later expanded into commercial enterprise work. Its official architecture material gives examples from hospital operations, airlines, utilities, manufacturing, and defense. Independent coverage also discusses government services, law enforcement, and military contexts. The range of settings matters: the software’s purpose and consequences depend on the organization, the data it connects, and the decisions its workflows support.

Palantir reported in its 2025 Form 10-K that it was founded in 2003. In the same filing, the company describes its work this way: “We build software that empowers organizations to effectively integrate their data, decisions, and operations at scale.” That is the company’s own characterization, not an independent finding about results in every deployment.

What to examine when evaluating a deployment

The platform name alone does not tell you how a particular organization uses it or whether a deployment is appropriate for a given task. A practical evaluation should focus on the mission and the system’s implementation:

  • Users and mission: Is the system supporting defense or intelligence, public services, or commercial operations?
  • Operational need: Does the organization need analysis alone, or workflows and actions connected to daily work?
  • Data integration: Which systems, formats, and operational sources must be connected, and how will their data be maintained?
  • Deployment environment: Confirm the specific offering and contract support the required cloud, on-premises, edge, or constrained environment.
  • Governance: Check identity integration, access scopes, auditability, data lineage, and controls over human and AI actions.
  • Implementation effort: Establish the staffing, customization, schedule, and total cost for the customer’s own scope rather than assuming a standard effort or outcome.

Security and governance features do not, by themselves, guarantee responsible use. Configuration, organizational policy, human oversight, and the context of a decision all matter. Software may enable a workflow, but the organization remains responsible for the decisions it makes with it.

What the available evidence does not establish

Palantir’s product documentation and company filing explain its intended architecture and product roles, but they do not establish that Palantir is faster, cheaper, more accurate, more secure, or more effective than named competitors. They also do not provide a neutral benchmark for productivity, return on investment, or implementation cost. Those questions require evidence about a specific use case and deployment.

For the company’s product descriptions, see Palantir’s platform overview and architecture center. Its reported founding year and company description appear in its 2025 Form 10-K. For independent context on controversy around the company, see The Week’s coverage.
