What “reasonably affordable” means in this list
Fratello’s November 2024 selection was not simply a ranking of the five cheapest Rolex references. It highlighted discontinued models the author considered comparatively attainable within the brand. That distinction matters for personal budgeting: a lower price than other Rolex models can still represent a substantial purchase, especially once a buyer accounts for condition, service history, and seller terms.
The original article’s euro estimates are historical snapshots, not a like-for-like valuation of all five watches. Later figures available for some references use different currencies, listing samples, and seller categories, so they do not establish a reliable current cheapest-to-most-expensive ranking.

How the watches differ for a buyer
Explorer 114270: compact, straightforward design
The 36 mm Explorer is the most direct option for someone who wants a time-only watch in a relatively compact case. Its caliber 3130 and solid end links distinguish it from earlier Explorer generations. The reference ran from 2001 until the 39 mm 214270 succeeded it.
Datejust 1601: vintage date watch with a slower setting routine
The 1601 pairs the pie-pan dial with a fluted white-gold bezel and Jubilee bracelet. Its date does not have a quick-set function, so setting it can take more effort than on later Datejusts. Fratello notes that caliber 1565 gave way to caliber 1575 in 1965, including a higher beat rate and hacking seconds. Because this is an older reference, the individual watch’s condition, originality, and maintenance history deserve close attention.

Explorer II 16570: a second-time-zone function and dial choice
The 40 mm Explorer II adds a second-time-zone function, with black and white “Polar” dial options. Its production period ran from 1989 to 2011. Caliber 3185 was used until 2007, when caliber 3186 arrived, making movement generation one detail to verify for a specific example.
Submariner 14060(M): no date, with two movement generations
The 40 mm 14060 keeps the Submariner’s date-free layout. It uses caliber 3000; the 14060M update beginning in 1999 uses caliber 3130. Both are associated in Fratello’s account with an aluminum bezel insert and a 300 m depth rating. A buyer choosing between the versions should check the reference and movement rather than assume all 14060-series watches are identical.

Air-King 5500: the lowest dated estimate, with vintage-specific checks
At 34 mm, the Air-King 5500 is the smallest of the listed watches with a stated case size. Its long production span, from 1957 to 1989, includes multiple dial variants and calibers 1520 or 1530. Fratello called it the list’s most affordable pick based on its November 2024 estimate, while cautioning buyers to research condition and authenticity.
What later price evidence does—and does not—show
Later figures are available for the Explorer 114270, but they measure different things. RLXCPO’s certified pre-owned page, updated October 5, 2026, showed 12 listings with a lowest asking price of $7,950, a median of $9,450, and a highest asking price of $10,250. Those are certified pre-owned asking prices, not completed sales.

Price That Watch reported an average market price of $7,127 and a $5,470–$8,595 range based on 92 listings, updated September 9, 2026. Its sample and methodology differ from RLXCPO’s, so the figures should not be blended or treated as an apples-to-apples comparison.
Chrono24’s used Rolex results accessed October 8, 2026, showed individual U.S. asking-price examples for the Datejust 1601, Explorer II 16570, and Submariner 14060M. Individual live listings are not representative market averages. Bob’s Watches displayed a $3,000–$5,195 range for the Air-King 5500, but the date and methodology for that figure were not established in the cited page excerpt, so it should not be presented as a current benchmark.

For a discontinued watch, the reference number alone does not establish value or suitability. Compare the specific watch and the transaction terms before committing money.

- Confirm the reference and configuration. Verify the model, movement generation where relevant, dial variant, bezel, and bracelet against the seller’s description.
- Inspect condition and originality. Look for clear information about the case, dial, hands, bezel, and bracelet, and ask about any replaced or refinished parts.
- Ask for service information. A stated service history is useful only if its date and scope are clear. Account for the possibility that an older watch may need attention.
