The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each lost 0.2%, while the Dow fell 0.7% and the Russell 2000 dropped 1.3%. The Associated Press reported that rising global yields, inflation and government-debt concerns were weighing on investment prices; that context is not proof of a single cause.
How the major U.S. indexes closed on October 7
The latest completed U.S. cash-market session as of 00:57 UTC on October 8 was Wednesday, October 7. The closing figures below are from the Associated Press’s October 7 report.
| Index | October 7 close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,801.77 | Down 17.16 points (0.2%) |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 51,179.87 | Down 341.41 points (0.7%) |
| Nasdaq Composite | 27,538.69 | Down 61.20 points (0.2%) |
| Russell 2000 | 2,793.20 | Down 37.09 points (1.3%) |
The declines followed a record for the S&P 500 on Tuesday. The Russell 2000 had the largest percentage loss among these four indexes, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq had smaller declines. Index performance alone does not show how every stock or sector traded.
What was reported as pressure on stocks
The Associated Press described higher global yields, inflation and government-debt concerns as pressures on investment prices. It also reported that France’s stock index fell 1.2%. These are reported market conditions and context, not a definitive explanation of every U.S. index move.

What to check in a CNBC market update
A daily index recap is only one view of the market. CNBC’s stocks coverage groups information around stocks, the Dow 30, Nasdaq 100, sectors, movers and market headlines; its markets coverage also includes international markets, currencies, cryptocurrencies, commodities, bonds and ETFs. Those categories can help readers check whether a move is broad or concentrated and what other asset classes are doing.

What this session does—and does not—say
One down session after a record does not establish a lasting market trend or predict the next session. The reported closing data establish where the four indexes finished on October 7; they do not by themselves show the cause of each move, future performance or whether an individual portfolio should change.
No sufficiently sourced, date-specific expert quotation accompanied this recap, so no individual forecast or recommendation is attributed here. Treat any strategist’s outlook in market coverage as opinion, distinct from observed closing figures.
