Christine Hunsicker, CaaStle’s founder and former CEO, pleaded guilty to one count of securities fraud on March 4, 2026, and was sentenced to five years in prison on August 20, 2026, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. The case began with her July 18, 2025 surrender after prosecutors announced an indictment alleging a fraud scheme involving CaaStle and venture P180.

What happened to the CaaStle founder?

Hunsicker turned herself in on the morning of July 18, 2025, after the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced the indictment. Prosecutors said she was expected to appear in federal court that afternoon. The announcement also said CaaStle had filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on June 20, 2025. The DOJ’s charging announcement described the case as allegations at that stage, not established facts.

What did prosecutors allege?

The July 2025 indictment charged Hunsicker with wire fraud, two counts of securities fraud, money laundering, making false statements to a financial institution, and aggravated identity theft. Prosecutors alleged that she sought to defraud investors in CaaStle and P180 of more than $300 million through false statements, misleading claims, and fabricated documents. Those were allegations in the indictment; Hunsicker later pleaded guilty to a single securities-fraud count.

How did the case end?

Guilty plea

On March 4, 2026, Hunsicker pleaded guilty to one count of securities fraud before U.S. District Judge J. Paul Oetken. The Southern District of New York said the plea related to a scheme involving hundreds of investors and that she agreed to forfeit nearly $300 million in proceeds from her illegal scheme and a scheme involving P180. The plea announcement states the government’s account of the plea and forfeiture agreement.

What was the defense response at the time?

At Hunsicker’s initial appearance on July 18, 2025, the Associated Press reported that she pleaded not guilty and was released on a $1 million bail package. Her lawyers, Michael Levy and Anna Skotko, called the indictment “an incomplete and very distorted picture” and described her as “fully cooperative and transparent” with prosecutors and the SEC. Those statements were made in response to the indictment, before her later guilty plea; they should not be read as a response to the sentence.
