YNAB: Best for giving every dollar a job
YNAB is the most structured option in this group. Its method asks you to assign the money currently available to categories such as rent, groceries, insurance, and annual expenses. That makes it a good fit if your main problem is overspending before the next paycheck or failing to prepare for irregular bills.
The direct signup trial is 34 days. The subscription costs $109 annually or $14.99 monthly, plus applicable tax. YNAB says one subscription can be shared with up to six people, which makes the household cost more reasonable.

Bank syncing is optional. YNAB uses MX and Plaid for Direct Import, but you can also enter transactions manually or import QFX, OFX, QIF, or CSV files on the web app or iPad. File imports are not available on iPhone or Android. When you connect an account, YNAB imports the current opening balance as a Starting Balance; it does not automatically bring in transactions that cleared before that date.
Where YNAB stands out
- Targets distinguish between setting aside a full amount, refilling what was spent, and building a balance over time.
- Reconciliation tools help you compare the register with the bank and prevent older transactions from being imported again.
- Manual entry remains a first-class option rather than a fallback for unsupported banks.
To create a target on the web, open Plan, select a category, choose Create Target in the right sidebar, select the target behavior and cadence, then click Save Target. For account reconciliation, open the account register and select Reconcile in the upper-right corner.
The main drawback is that Direct Import is not instant. New cleared transactions generally appear within 24 to 72 hours. Also, a plan can use a selected currency but cannot combine multiple currencies in one spending plan.
Monarch Money: Best for a complete household money picture
Monarch Money is the strongest all-around dashboard for people who want budgeting alongside account aggregation, investment tracking, goals, reports, and household sharing. It connects to more than 13,000 financial institutions and uses multiple data providers, which can help when one connection route is unavailable.

The subscription includes web, iOS, Android, and iPad access, unlimited connected accounts, unlimited collaborators, investment tracking, reports, goals, and both of Monarch’s current budgeting systems.
Two budgeting modes, not one
Monarch currently offers Flex Budgeting and Category Budgeting. Flex is the default and concentrates on a high-level flexible-spending amount instead of requiring a planned figure for every category. Category Budgeting is the more traditional choice for users who want individual category amounts.
When you first open the budget page, Monarch suggests amounts using a six-month spending average. You can replace those figures manually or reset them using a selected month or the six-month average. Budgets are rounded to the nearest dollar, so the budget view does not display exact cents.

Important Monarch caveats
- Monarch tracks and plans money but does not move funds into or out of bank accounts or pay bills directly.
- Household members get separate logins but the same level of access to accounts, transactions, and budgets.
- If you edit a pending transaction, the bank’s finalized transaction can overwrite that edit after posting.
Quicken Simplifi: Best low-cost option for a spending plan
Quicken Simplifi is aimed at people who want an automatically updated overview without committing to a detailed envelope or zero-based method. Its central budgeting feature is the Spending Plan, which shows what remains available to spend or save. You can use it at a broad level or add more detail.
Quicken’s current pricing page lists Simplifi at $2.99 per month when billed annually, discounted from a displayed $5.99 monthly equivalent. Promotional terms can change. Simplifi works through a browser and mobile apps, and also includes savings goals, investments, and projected cash flow.
Its Savings Goals are useful when the objective is more important than the account location. You can set a target amount, date, and monthly contribution, and a goal can work with a checking account rather than requiring a separate savings account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The key product distinction is that Simplifi is not Quicken Classic with a new interface. Quicken describes them as separate cloud-based products with incompatible data files. Someone moving from Quicken Classic should treat Simplifi as a different product and check the migration implications before subscribing.
Billing details worth knowing
Simplifi subscriptions renew automatically at the then-current subscription price, not necessarily the introductory price. Quicken publishes a 30-day money-back satisfaction guarantee, including a refund option within 30 days of an automatic renewal. Quicken may also place a temporary $1 authorization on the payment card around renewal; it says this normally disappears within about five days.

Copilot Money: Best for Apple households
Copilot Money combines automated transaction categorization, spending views, net-worth tracking, and a conversational Money Assistant in a polished interface. It is available in the United States on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and, since December 2025, the web. It supports U.S.-based institutions and accounts only.
Copilot currently advertises $95 per year, shown as $7.92 per month, or $13 per month on the monthly plan. New users receive a one-month free trial. There is no permanent free tier.
Copilot says it supports more than 10,000 U.S. financial institutions, including direct integrations with Venmo, Apple Card, and Coinbase. It also says it does not sell users’ financial data and does not show advertising.
The principal weakness is platform coverage. The web app has most iOS and Mac features, but Copilot says full feature parity is still being developed. If you plan to use the browser as your main interface, verify that the specific action you need is available there rather than assuming an iPhone or Mac feature will be present.
Rocket Money: Best for subscriptions and recurring bills
Rocket Money is the most specialized pick. Its free plan includes core subscription tracking, budgeting, and bill reminders. Premium adds features such as unlimited budget categories, net-worth tracking, goals, real-time syncing, transaction splitting, tags, notes, automation rules, manual transactions, account sharing, transaction export, and full Experian credit reports using the FICO 2 model.
Premium does not have one universal published price. Rocket Money uses a user-selected sliding-scale monthly price, which can vary by platform, and offers new Premium members a seven-day trial. Bill negotiation has a separate success fee: 35% to 60% of the first year’s savings, charged once.
What subscription cancellation actually does
Rocket Money detects recurring charges from connected accounts. For a supported provider in the mobile app, open Recurring → All, tap the ••• beside the subscription, choose Cancel, then select Cancel This For Me or View Instructions. If the Cancel option is missing, Rocket Money cannot cancel that provider on your behalf and supplies manual instructions instead.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Goodbudget: Best envelope system with a usable free plan
Goodbudget uses the classic envelope method: envelopes describe how money is intended to be used, while accounts describe where the money is held. The system keeps those two views aligned, except for off-budget debt accounts.
Recommended Free Tools
The free plan includes 10 regular envelopes, 10 annual or goal envelopes, one account, one year of history, debt tracking, community support, and sharing across two mobile devices. Premium costs $10 per month or $80 per year and adds unlimited regular and goal envelopes, unlimited accounts, seven years of history, five mobile devices, email support, and automatic bank sync for U.S. banks.
Automatic imports usually appear one to three days after a purchase, depending on the bank. Goodbudget’s Match feature can merge a manually entered transaction with its later imported copy, reducing duplicates.
To add accounts on the web, open Accounts → Add/Edit, make changes on the Edit Accounts page, and click Save Changes. Android users should note that the app does not allow creation of Debt Accounts.
The device-limit trap
Free accounts allow two mobile devices and Premium allows five; web logins do not count. An iOS upgrade can sometimes be recognized as a new phone. If you see Device Limit Reached, open the website and go to My Household → Manage Devices, then select Revoke access for the old device. If that fails, revoke every listed device and sign in again.

How to choose the right app
- Choose the budgeting method first. Select YNAB for assigned-dollar planning, Goodbudget for envelopes, Monarch for category or flexible budgets, or Simplifi for a lighter spending plan.
- Decide whether you need a financial dashboard. Monarch and Copilot emphasize account aggregation and financial overviews. Rocket Money is more focused on recurring charges.
- Check your devices and institutions. Copilot is U.S.-only and has incomplete web parity. Goodbudget’s bank sync is Premium-only. YNAB supports manual and file imports if your bank connection is unreliable.
- Price the renewal, not just the trial. Simplifi’s subscription renews at the current rate, and Rocket Money Premium uses sliding-scale pricing. Free tiers can also impose meaningful limits on history, accounts, envelopes, or devices.
- Expect delayed feeds. A connected account does not mean instant data. YNAB documents 24-to-72-hour Direct Import delays, and Goodbudget says imports generally take one to three days.
Our final picks
Pick YNAB if you need a budgeting discipline and are willing to enter or approve transactions consistently. Pick Monarch Money if you want one household view spanning spending, investments, goals, and reports. Pick Simplifi if a low annual price and a straightforward Spending Plan matter more than envelope-style control.
Pick Copilot if you use Apple hardware and want an automated, design-focused experience. Pick Rocket Money if recurring charges are the problem you want to solve first. Pick Goodbudget if you want to practice envelope budgeting at no cost and can live with manual entry and tight free-plan limits.
FAQ
Which budgeting app is best for beginners?
Simplifi is the easiest starting point for a broad spending overview, while Goodbudget is a better beginner choice for learning envelope budgeting. YNAB is powerful but requires more active decisions about assigning available money.
Do budgeting apps update bank transactions in real time?
Not reliably. YNAB says Direct Import transactions generally appear within 24 to 72 hours after clearing, and Goodbudget says automatic imports commonly take one to three days. Bank posting and refresh schedules affect the delay.
Which app has a free plan?
Rocket Money and Goodbudget have free plans. Rocket Money’s free tier includes core subscription tracking, budgeting, and bill reminders. Goodbudget Free limits envelopes, accounts, history, and mobile devices. YNAB, Monarch, Simplifi, and Copilot offer trials or paid subscriptions rather than permanent full-featured free plans.
Can YNAB be used without connecting a bank?
Yes. YNAB supports manual transaction entry and file imports in QFX, OFX, QIF, or CSV formats on the web app or iPad. Direct Import is optional.
Can Rocket Money cancel every subscription it finds?
No. Cancellation depends on the provider. If Rocket Money does not show a Cancel action, it provides instructions for canceling manually.
Is Quicken Simplifi the same as Quicken Classic?
No. Quicken describes them as separate products, and their data files cannot be used interchangeably.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes Monarch Money move money between bank accounts?
No. Monarch is a tracking and planning layer. It does not directly access bank accounts to move money in or out or pay bills.
The Bottom Line
No app can compensate for missing accounts, stale bank feeds, or a budgeting method you will not maintain. Start with the workflow you will actually use: YNAB for deliberate allocation, Monarch for broad household visibility, Simplifi for low-cost cash-flow planning, Copilot for Apple-centered automation, Rocket Money for recurring charges, and Goodbudget for envelopes.
