A reported favorable visit to COMAC’s facilities and later EASA flight testing signal progress in the European review of the C919—but neither means the aircraft has received EU certification. The facility feedback was reported secondhand, and the latest cited flight tests were one stage in a longer process.
What the reported facility assessment means
A 2024 account said European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) representatives visited COMAC’s Shanghai facilities, examined the C919 and reviewed its full-flight simulator. The account described the feedback as positive, citing people familiar with the visit and relaying South China Morning Post reporting. The report did not include a public EASA audit report or a formal aircraft type-certificate decision.
That distinction matters: a reported favorable facility visit is evidence of evaluation activity, not proof that EASA certified COMAC as a facility or approved the C919 for European operation. No public audit score or count of findings is established in the cited account.
Where EASA’s C919 evaluation stood in 2026
A July 20, 2026 report said EASA flight tests were part of the third stage in a four-step certification process. Sources characterized the tests as finding “no major hardware risks,” but that is an attributed description of the testing, not an official certificate or a declaration that approval is imminent. The report describes continuing evaluation, not a completed process.

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission’s 2025 report said EASA had indicated certification would not be possible before 2028. That is a dated estimate, not a promised approval date; the subsequent 2026 reporting describes evaluation work still underway. The commission report also recorded 13 C919 deliveries in 2024, amounting to 7% of domestic demand against a 10% target. Those figures concern 2024 only and do not establish current deliveries or fleet size.
EU review is separate from Chinese certification
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has its own airworthiness and operational evaluation. In a 2023 notice, CAAC said C919 Aircraft Evaluation Group work had proceeded alongside airworthiness certification since 2016. The resulting evaluation covered matters such as pilot and maintenance-personnel qualification, minimum equipment, maintenance requirements, and continued-airworthiness documents. CAAC’s notice describes Chinese evaluation work; it does not establish EASA approval.

The LEAP-1C engine certificate is not an aircraft certificate
EASA issued a Type Certificate for the LEAP-1C engine on December 21, 2016; the agency said it was designed to power the C919. That approval applies to the engine, not the complete aircraft. EASA’s announcement makes the distinction clear.

The C919 is a single-aisle aircraft positioned in the broad market served by the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. The reporting cited here supports that competitive context, but does not provide a like-for-like comparison of performance, operating costs, production capacity, support networks, or economics.

For European customers and operators, the key distinction is regulatory: progress in an EASA evaluation is not permission to treat the aircraft as certified for EU operations. Until EASA issues an aircraft type certificate, the favorable visit and reported flight-test findings should be read as milestones in review—not as the outcome. The available accounts do not establish when or whether the process will conclude.
