Reenita Malhotra Hora’s account traces the brand from an earlier blade business to a name registered in 1968 and a launch she dates to August 1970. The story is also one of family input and later disputes—not a documented measure of how many homes used Topaz.
Topaz came after the Malhotras’ earlier blade brands
In an excerpt from Ace of Blades, published by Scroll.in on December 9, 2025, Reenita Malhotra Hora describes the Malhotras as registering possible product names ahead of their use. Her account says Surinder Nath Malhotra registered “Prince” in the early 1960s, “Ashok” in 1965, and “Topaz” in 1968. It credits his wife, Suman, with suggesting Topaz after she was inspired by Leon Uris’s 1967 novel. These are the book’s reported details; no trademark record is cited to independently confirm the registrations.
The sequence matters: Topaz was not the family’s first blade brand. Hora says the Malhotras produced their first stainless-steel blade, Ashok, in 1965. She reports its price as 13 paise, compared with 15 paise for competing carbon blades. Those figures refer to Ashok, not Topaz, and come from the 2025 book excerpt.
Why RK Malhotra wanted more control over production
Hora’s account presents RK Malhotra as seeking a premium blade that could serve a different market segment. It also describes him arguing for control over steel rolling and blade manufacturing so the business could manage costs, quality and supply. That is the rationale attributed to him in the book, not an independently verified corporate record.

The strategy linked product positioning to industrial capability. In the account, the aim was not only to sell a blade at a particular price or under a distinctive name; it was to build the capacity to control important stages of making it. That ambition helps explain why engineering and production sit at the center of the Topaz origin story.
How Topaz was developed and launched
In a 2026 interview with Goa Chronicle, Hora says RK approached Wilkinson Sword about a collaboration and later brought in former Wilkinson engineers. She dates the Topaz launch to August 1970. This chronology comes from the author’s interview and should be understood as her account; the available sources do not independently document the launch or the engineers’ roles.

The name’s reported registration in 1968 and the launch in August 1970 are different milestones: one concerns the name, the other the product’s introduction. Keeping them distinct avoids treating the registration date as the launch date.
Topaz’s later history involved disputes and a changing company story
Hora’s interview also recounts conflict over Topaz naming rights, Vidyut Metallics printing its name on wrappers, and a transition to Supermax. These details complicate any simple account in which one company continuously owned and controlled the brand. The interview supplies the author’s version of this later history; the available sources do not verify it against company filings or trademark records.

For readers interested in business history, this is an important distinction: a product name, the company manufacturing or distributing a product, and the rights to a brand can become separate questions. The interview indicates that Topaz’s later path involved those complications, but does not provide enough independently verified documentation to settle them.

The phrase “found in every home” is promotional framing in the headline, not a household-penetration statistic established by the sources here. The available pages provide no attributed figure for Topaz sales, market share or the proportion of Indian households that owned or used it. It is fair to describe Topaz as an iconic blade in the title’s language, but not to turn that wording into a measured claim of universal reach.
