In its 5 September 2024 report on the City of Nedlands’ approved 2024/25 budget, PerthNow said $500,000 for bushland maintenance had been left out and Point Resolution Childcare was due to close on 9 October. Those are historical reports, not confirmation of either service’s status in 2026.
What the 2024/25 budget story reported
PerthNow reported that the approved budget formalised a 3.6 per cent rates rise, after an earlier proposed increase of 9.5 per cent had drawn criticism. The report said $500,000 in bushland maintenance funding was omitted. It presented that omission and the planned childcare closure as separate decisions affecting local services.
PerthNow’s 5 September 2024 report attributed the savings approach to Mayor Fiona Argyle. Argyle said the City planned to reduce reliance on consultants and contractors, make greater use of community participation and have staff prepare their own reports. She described the approach as “we’re cutting the fat, not the muscle”.
Why bushland volunteers objected
Lesley Shaw, a volunteer with the Melon Hill Bushland Group since it began in 1997, disputed the idea that community participation could replace contractor work. Shaw said: “There are a number of jobs that go beyond our capacity which have to be done by contractors and requires specialised work.” She called the substitution unacceptable: “This decision to cut funding and instead use us volunteers as a cheap alternative is unacceptable”. These are Shaw’s views as quoted by PerthNow, not a neutral assessment of which tasks volunteers can perform.

Later figures provide context, not a direct reconciliation
A City Council minutes document dated 22 October 2024 lists three 2024/25 budget amounts for bushland-related work. They total $448,510, but the minutes’ figures do not establish that this was the same funding as the $500,000 omission reported in September.
| Task listed in 22 October minutes | 2024/25 amount |
|---|---|
| Priority environmental weed control | $212,460 |
| Natural-area restoration site maintenance | $181,200 |
| Watering | $54,850 |
| Total of these three listed amounts | $448,510 |
The minutes followed a 29 August special-meeting document that proposed adding $450,000 for bushland contractors. That was a proposal, not evidence by itself of an adopted allocation. The special-meeting document said the omission had been made without prior testing, Council discussion or consultation with relevant volunteer groups; that characterization belongs to the document’s authors.

What happened to Point Resolution Childcare
According to the City’s 2024 public notice, Council decided on 27 August to close the long-established Point Resolution Childcare Centre on 9 October 2024 and seek expressions of interest from another provider. PerthNow reported that 26 user families had been notified. The City’s public notice about the closure confirms the planned closure and EOI process, but the cited material does not establish whether a replacement operator took over or what the centre’s status became after October 2024.

The available dated records describe decisions and competing positions in 2024. They do not verify the current operating status of Point Resolution Childcare, the outcome of the expression-of-interest process, or whether later decisions changed bushland funding. The figures should therefore be read in their specific contexts: a reported $500,000 omission, a proposed $450,000 amendment, and three amounts listed in October minutes—not as interchangeable versions of one confirmed allocation.
