Blue Origin is pausing New Shepard flights for at least two years and shifting resources to its human lunar program, the company announced January 30, 2026. It described the move as support for the goal of returning to the Moon and establishing a sustained presence there—not as a permanent cancellation of space tourism. The announcement does not give a date for New Shepard flights to resume.

Why is Blue Origin pausing New Shepard flights?

Blue Origin says it is redirecting people and resources to accelerate its human lunar capabilities. The company’s January 30 announcement came after New Shepard’s 38th flight. Blue Origin said the system had carried 98 people above the Kármán line and launched more than 200 scientific and research payloads, and that it had a multi-year customer backlog. Those are the company’s reported figures, not independently audited counts. Blue Origin’s announcement said the decision reflects its commitment to the national goal of returning to the Moon and establishing a permanent, sustained lunar presence.

The pause is a resource shift, not evidence that the New Shepard program has been permanently cancelled. The announcement sets a minimum duration of two years but does not state a restart date or say whether flights will resume immediately after that period.

How New Shepard and Blue Moon differ

Program Destination and role Status in the cited announcements
New Shepard Reusable suborbital vehicle for passenger flights and research payloads. Flights paused for no less than two years as Blue Origin shifts resources to lunar work; no restart date stated by the company.
Blue Moon Mark 1 Uncrewed lunar lander intended to deliver science and technology payloads and demonstrate precision landing. NASA reported integrated testing progress in August 2026 and listed January 2027 as the planned launch date.
Blue Moon Mark 2 Crewed lander planned to carry two astronauts between Orion in lunar orbit and the Moon’s surface, then return them to Orion. NASA describes a full-scale cabin mock-up for training and testing and a plan for the lander to launch uncrewed on New Glenn.

The vehicles serve different missions: New Shepard flies above Earth, while Blue Moon is being developed for lunar deliveries and, in Mark 2’s case, crew transport. Blue Moon is not already carrying astronauts.

What Blue Moon Mark 1 is meant to do

Mark 1, named Endurance for its first mission, is Blue Origin’s uncrewed cargo and payload lander. NASA says its mission is intended to land on the Shackleton Connecting Ridge near the lunar South Pole, deliver science and technology, demonstrate precision landing, and reduce risk for future crewed Artemis landings. NASA’s event page lists January 2027 as the launch schedule; that is an agency plan, not a guaranteed launch date. NASA’s Mark 1 event page

In an August 2026 update, NASA said the lander had completed an environmental test campaign that included thermal-vacuum assessment at Johnson Space Center. Its structure, propulsion elements, and avionics had been assembled; cryogenic propellant loading remained among the pre-launch tests described. NASA’s update on human spaceflight

What the crewed Mark 2 plan involves

Mark 2 is a separate, crewed lander effort associated with Artemis. NASA describes a mission in which two astronauts transfer from Orion in lunar orbit to the surface and then return to Orion. The agency’s May 7, 2026 article says the lander is planned to launch uncrewed atop New Glenn and meet Orion in lunar orbit. NASA describes the Blue Moon crew lander as about 52 feet tall. These are program plans and design details, not evidence of a completed crewed vehicle or a flown mission. NASA’s Blue Moon overview

How this fits NASA’s Moon Base plans

NASA’s Moon Base effort depends on commercial partners delivering science, technology, and infrastructure to the lunar surface. Robotic landers are intended to establish capability and provide deliveries; a later crewed lander would transport astronauts between lunar orbit and the surface. NASA’s August 2026 description says Moon Base Phase I runs through 2029 and includes more than twenty robotic landings, with commercial partners including Blue Origin working toward lander deliveries by 2028. These are targets, not proof that each mission will meet schedule. NASA’s Moon Base page

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman described the effort as a sequence of learning opportunities: “Every mission, crewed and uncrewed, will be a learning opportunity as we return to the lunar surface, build the infrastructure to stay, and master the skills required to live and operate in one of the most demanding and dangerous environments imaginable.”

Schedule and launch risks remain

NASA’s Office of Inspector General reported on March 10, 2026 that lander development challenges would delay planned Artemis launch dates. It also said NASA did not then have the capability to rescue crew stranded in space or on the lunar surface. This is a dated oversight finding; it should not be read as a statement that no later changes have occurred. NASA Office of Inspector General report

Blue Origin’s lunar strategy also depends on its launch capabilities. In a June 30, 2026 company update, Blue Origin described a significant New Glenn hotfire anomaly on May 28 and recovery and rebuild work, while stating a path to return to flight during 2026. That update does not establish the eventual return date or outcome. Blue Origin’s company update

What is known about New Shepard’s return?

The January 30 announcement establishes a pause of no less than two years, but the cited company material does not provide a specific date for flights to resume. The absence of a restart date does not establish that the pause has been extended or that New Shepard will never fly again. Until Blue Origin announces a change, the clearest description is that passenger and research flights are paused while the company prioritizes lunar development.
