BlackRock estimated its Byju’s stake was worth zero in a disclosure for the period ending March 2024, according to TechCrunch’s June 7, 2024 report. That was an estimate of one investor’s holding—not proof that Byju’s as a whole had no value, and not a public-market price.
What BlackRock’s zero mark means
The figure reported by TechCrunch applies to BlackRock’s stake in Byju’s for the reporting period ending March 2024. It is a portfolio estimate: an investor’s assessment of what its own holding is worth. It is not the same thing as a sale price, a current share price available to the public, or a formal valuation of every part of the company.
The distinction matters because a private-company valuation, an investor’s mark on a particular stake, and the amount ultimately realized when that stake is sold are different measures. The reported $22 billion figure was an earlier valuation of Byju’s as a company; the later zero figure concerned BlackRock’s holding. The reporting does not establish that the company itself was objectively worth zero.
How the reported valuations changed
The figures below come from different reports and do not form a single audited valuation series. In particular, the $22 billion figure concerns a reported company valuation, while later figures describe BlackRock’s estimate or an implied valuation based on its share mark.

What problems were reported at the time
TechCrunch described a difficult period for the Bengaluru-based education technology company. Its report cited delayed financial reporting, revenue projections more than 50% below target, governance concerns, auditor and board-member resignations, and a derailed discussion about a $1 billion fundraise. Financial Express had also reported funding difficulty, payroll issues, debt exceeding $1 billion, and legal disputes in January 2024.

TechCrunch additionally reported that Byju’s raised $200 million in 2024 at an approximately $250 million post-money valuation, while some major investors legally disputed the transaction. These are reported developments, not a disclosed breakdown of how BlackRock calculated its mark. The coverage reviewed does not quantify how much any one concern affected the estimate.
What is known about BlackRock’s method
The reporting does not provide a detailed explanation from BlackRock for the zero mark. TechCrunch said BlackRock and Byju’s declined to comment; Financial Express likewise reported that BlackRock had not disclosed its rationale in the disclosures it discussed. The available coverage therefore does not establish which inputs BlackRock used, how it weighted risks, or why its estimate moved from about $1 billion at the end of October 2023 to zero for the period ending March 2024.

TechCrunch separately discussed HSBC’s analysis of Prosus’ roughly 10% stake in Byju’s. HSBC did not assign a value to that stake, and clarified that it was not valuing all of Byju’s; not assigning a value to one holding was not equivalent to setting the whole company’s value at zero. HSBC’s research note described a general 50% discount to a latest funding round or acquisition price for assets whose last round was more than six months old, reflecting a correction in comparable public edtech and SaaS multiples. That was HSBC’s approach for assets in its note—not BlackRock’s explanation.

A 2026 opinion from the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware in lender litigation involving Byju’s Alpha affirmed judgments concerning transfers of the Alpha Funds. The opinion discusses more than $533 million transferred to Camshaft Fund, as well as findings of insolvency and fraudulent-transfer intent in that proceeding. This is later legal context about Byju’s financial distress, but it concerns a separate debtor and case.
