The widely reported “almost $2 million” milestone referred to a GoFundMe for Ahmed al-Ahmed, the man who disarmed an attacker at Bondi Beach—not a combined total for every Bondi-related fundraiser. CBS News described the campaign as having raised almost $2 million on December 29, 2025. A separate report had put it at A$1.9 million as of 11:30 a.m. on December 16, 2025.
Which GoFundMe raised almost $2 million?
The figure was associated with the fundraiser for Ahmed al-Ahmed, not an aggregate of all campaigns connected to the Bondi Beach mass shooting. CBS News reported the “almost $2 million” milestone on December 29, 2025, without specifying an exact total or currency conversion. CBS News’s report included an interview in which al-Ahmed said his goal was “to take the gun from him and to stop him from killing a human being.”
Earlier, Yahoo News Australia, republishing NCA NewsWire, reported that the fundraiser had reached A$1.9 million as of 11:30 a.m. on December 16, 2025. That was a time-specific update, not a final total. Read the December 16 report.
Who organized the campaign, and what does its page show?
The GoFundMe campaign page names Car Hub Australia and Thomas Traynor as co-organizers and Ahmed al-Ahmed as the beneficiary. A page snapshot captured before October 8, 2026 showed A$2,664,873 raised toward a A$3 million target, from 44,961 donations. Because the page’s figures can change, this is a dated display snapshot—not the campaign’s final total or proof that funds have been withdrawn or distributed. Were there other Bondi Beach fundraisers?
Yes. The headline milestone should not be read as the combined amount raised by all campaigns. GoFundMe’s Bondi Beach event hub lists fundraisers for people affected by the attack, and a separate campaign focused on supporting victims and families. The existence of separate campaigns means totals should not be combined unless the campaigns included and the dates of their displayed figures are clearly specified.
GoFundMe says that fundraisers listed on its event hub have been verified by its Trust & Safety experts and that it will continue adding fundraisers as they are verified. That statement applies to fundraisers on the hub; it is not a claim that every campaign using Bondi-related wording is verified, nor does it provide a final accounting of money raised or paid out. - Purpose: Read what the campaign says donations are intended to support; different fundraisers may serve different people or needs.
- Platform listing: If the campaign appears on GoFundMe’s event hub, the platform says it was verified by its Trust & Safety experts. Do not extend that claim to fundraisers outside the hub.
- Currency, target and date: Check the currency shown, the fundraising goal, the current displayed amount and when you viewed it. A changing page total is not necessarily a final accounting.
- Distribution information: Look for an organizer or platform update explaining withdrawals and how funds were used. The campaign figures and reports cited here do not establish final payout timing or distribution.
