Boeing’s October 2024 announcement set a company-wide target of cutting about 10% of its workforce, or roughly 17,000 jobs. The reported selection process, however, came from an internal presentation to Commercial Airplanes managers—not a public policy governing every Boeing employee. Its details should be understood as a historical account of that round, not proof of Boeing’s current practices or anyone’s individual severance rights.
What Boeing announced in October 2024
On October 11, 2024, CEO Kelly Ortberg told employees that Boeing planned to reduce its workforce by about 10%, approximately 17,000 jobs. He also outlined changes to airplane production plans. The announcement established the scale of the company-wide reduction, but did not make every business unit’s process or each employee’s outcome identical. Boeing’s October 11, 2024 message to employees is the primary source for the announcement.
What the reported Commercial Airplanes presentation said
A contemporaneous report summarizing Seattle Times reporting described slides from an internal presentation to managers in Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It said the announced cuts in that unit would be involuntary and that the presentation covered selection criteria for individuals and work groups. It also reported that the Machinists union was outside that round at the time. These details are reporting about a unit-level internal presentation, not a publicly available, company-wide Boeing reduction-in-force policy. The Seattle Times report provides that account.
Other business units could handle cuts differently
The same report said Boeing indicated that Defense, Space & Security, Global Services, and headquarters might handle the planned reduction differently. The available reporting therefore does not establish that Commercial Airplanes’ reported selection criteria applied to those groups, or that the same process applies to Boeing employees today.

When reported notices and departures were expected
Reuters reported that Boeing planned to issue 60-day notices to affected Commercial Airplanes staff in mid-November 2024, with departures expected in mid-January. This was the reported schedule for that historical round, not a current timeline for a later layoff. Reuters’ October 2024 report described the timing.
What historical reports said about support and severance
In November 2024, the Associated Press reported that 438 affected members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) would remain on payroll through mid-January. AP also reported that eligible employees would receive career-transition services and subsidized healthcare for up to three months, and that severance was typically around one week’s pay for each year of service. The AP report described those terms for the reported 2024 group.

Those historical reports do not establish a benefit guarantee for every Boeing employee or anyone affected by a later reduction. Eligibility and terms depend on the employee’s applicable plan, any collective bargaining agreement, and the documents issued for the specific separation.
Does WARN require Boeing to give employees 60 days’ notice?
The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act generally requires covered employers to provide at least 60 calendar days’ advance written notice for qualifying plant closings and mass layoffs. The U.S. Department of Labor’s overview describes a threshold involving 50 or more affected employees at a single employment site, along with employer-coverage conditions. Statutory exceptions and the facts of a particular event can affect whether the law applies. The Department of Labor’s WARN overview explains the general requirements.

WARN notices are also directed to employee representatives, local elected officials, and state dislocated-worker units. A 60-day notice reported for Boeing’s 2024 Commercial Airplanes round is not, by itself, a determination that a particular employee is covered by WARN or entitled to a claim. Location, worksite, employer coverage, circumstances, and any applicable exceptions matter.

Why Boeing’s 2026 executive plan does not settle other employees’ benefits
A Boeing executive layoff-benefits plan filed with the SEC was amended and restated effective June 23, 2026. Its stated scope is executives; it is not evidence of benefits for all Boeing employees. The SEC-filed plan is a reminder to check the document’s covered group and effective date before applying any plan terms to an individual case.
