A bill has a defined maturity and pays its face value at maturity; Bitcoin has no maturity date or promised payment, and its market price can change sharply. Bills may fit a known short-term cash need if you understand access and early-sale risks. Bitcoin is a speculative asset whose value when you need to sell is uncertain.
How Treasury bills and Bitcoin differ
A Treasury bill is a short-term U.S. government security that matures in one year or less. It may be sold at face value or at a discount; at maturity, Treasury pays face value. The difference between the purchase price and face value is the bill’s interest. See TreasuryDirect’s explanation of Treasury bills.
Bitcoin has no contractual maturity payment or face value. Its return depends on the market price when it is sold. A filing with the SEC states, “The price of bitcoin is highly volatile,” and warns that an investor could lose all or substantially all of an investment. The filing also describes risks involving custody, fraud, manipulation, operations, and regulation. See the SEC-filed disclosure.
Compare the risks, yield, and liquidity
| Factor | Treasury bills | Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| Return | Return depends on the price paid, face value, and holding period. A quoted rate also depends on whether it is an auction result or a secondary-market quote and on its calculation convention. | No contractual cash yield or maturity payment is established by the cited disclosure. Return depends on the market price when sold. |
| Principal and price risk | A bill held to maturity pays face value, but selling before maturity may produce a different amount because market yields can change resale prices. Inflation and reinvestment risk also remain. | The price can move substantially; there is no maturity payment to anchor the amount available on a particular date. |
| Liquidity and access | Bills can be bought at auction through TreasuryDirect or through a financial intermediary. If sold early, the proceeds depend on the available secondary-market price. | Trading occurs across multiple venues. Fragmented prices, outages, and liquidity disruptions can affect execution, custody, or access to funds. |
| Time horizon | Terms of up to one year allow a maturity date to be matched to a known cash need. | There is no maturity date; the sale price at the time funds are needed is uncertain. |
| Operational risks | Access depends on the chosen purchase route and, for an early sale, the secondary market. | In addition to price risk, risks include theft, fraud, security failures, venue disruption, and other market-structure risks. |
What a Treasury bill rate quote tells you
A bill rate is not a timeless promise of what a new buyer will earn. The U.S. Treasury describes its daily bill rates as indicative secondary-market quotations for recently auctioned bills, taken at about 3:30 p.m. on business days. The bank-discount convention uses par value and a 360-day year. That convention is not the same as simply reporting an investor’s realized return over the holding period. See the Treasury daily bill-rate series and its interest-rate information.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
As of October 7, 2026, the available Treasury rate observation identified here was dated September 24, 2026, so it does not establish a live rate for October 7. No numerical rate is stated here. To evaluate a particular quote, identify its date, bill maturity, whether it is an auction result or secondary-market quote, and the convention used to express it. Do not compare that quote with a Bitcoin price change unless the measurement periods and return calculations match.
Liquidity means more than trading volume
Liquidity is about how readily an asset can be traded in the amount you need without materially moving its price. The Federal Reserve’s market-liquidity framework considers bid-ask spreads, quoted market depth, and price impact—not just whether trading is occurring. See the Federal Reserve’s discussion of market liquidity.

For bills, the practical distinction is between buying at auction and needing to sell before maturity. The face-value payment applies at maturity, not to an early sale price. For Bitcoin, trading across venues does not guarantee a consistent price or uninterrupted access; venue disruptions and fragmented markets can complicate execution. A single label such as “liquid” cannot capture spread, depth, price impact, and access conditions in both markets.
When each may fit a financial goal
A known near-term cash need
If you need a set amount around a known date, a bill’s maturity can be matched to that timing, provided you understand the purchase terms and can avoid relying on an early sale. This is a way to think about fit, not a personalized recommendation. The bill’s quoted rate still needs to be evaluated for its date and convention.

A speculative investment
Bitcoin may be considered only by someone who understands that there is no maturity payment and who can tolerate substantial price movement, as well as custody, venue, and market-structure risks. If money must be available on a particular date, a decline before that date could leave less value than the amount invested.
How to access Treasury bills
TreasuryDirect accepts noncompetitive auction bids from individual investors. Banks, brokers, and dealers are other purchase routes. The route matters: auction purchase terms differ from obtaining a bill in the secondary market, and access to a bill before maturity is not the same as simply receiving face value at maturity. See TreasuryDirect’s guide to buying bills.

What this comparison cannot predict
There is no equivalent Bitcoin “yield” in the cited material, no standardized side-by-side liquidity score for the two assets, and no established future return or price for either. The available figures do not support a current October 7, 2026 bill yield. Those limits matter: neither an old rate observation nor past Bitcoin price movement establishes what an investor will earn next.
