Sydney FC announced on February 17, 2020 that AETOS Capital Group would renew its role as the club’s Principal Partner for the 2020 AFC Champions League campaign. The agreement was the third consecutive AFC Champions League partnership between the club and AETOS, according to Sydney FC.
AETOS branding was scheduled to appear on the front of Sydney FC’s home and away shirts during the tournament. The announcement did not publish the value of the agreement, its precise duration beyond the 2020 campaign, any exclusivity provisions, or an activation budget.
What the Sydney FC–AETOS agreement covered
The confirmed arrangement was competition-specific. AETOS was named Sydney FC’s Principal Partner for the 2020 AFC Champions League campaign, rather than being described as the club’s principal sponsor across every competition or as its permanent main shirt sponsor.
| Detail | Confirmed information |
|---|---|
| Announcement date | February 17, 2020 |
| Partner | AETOS Capital Group |
| Role | Principal Partner for Sydney FC’s 2020 AFC Champions League campaign |
| Brand placement | Front of Sydney FC’s home and away kits during the tournament |
| Partnership sequence | Third consecutive AFC Champions League partnership with Sydney FC |

This distinction matters for anyone assessing the commercial or financial significance of the deal. The release confirms visibility during the 2020 continental competition, but it does not establish that the agreement covered Sydney FC’s domestic fixtures, the club’s full 2019/20 season, or later AFC campaigns.

How the partnership developed
Sydney FC said AETOS had supported the club from its 2018 AFC Champions League campaign. The club’s 2018 announcement described AETOS as continuing as Principal Partner for the 2019 AFC Champions League campaign, following sponsorship of the 2018 campaign.
There is a separate timing point in the partnership history. A 2019 Sydney FC report said AETOS’s broader connection with football began with the 2017 AFC Champions League, while also describing 2019 as AETOS’s second year as Sydney FC’s principal AFC Champions League sponsor. The careful reading is that AETOS’s wider football involvement began in 2017, but the documented Sydney FC principal-partner relationship began in 2018.
Sydney FC also described 2020 as the club’s fourth AFC Champions League campaign in five years. That wording concerns the club’s tournament appearances; it does not mean Sydney FC had played in four consecutive editions.
The 2020 tournament setting
Sydney FC was drawn in Group H alongside:
- Yokohama F. Marinos of Japan;
- Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors of Korea Republic; and
- Shanghai SIPG of China, which entered through a play-off.
The campaign was scheduled to begin in Japan against J.League champions Yokohama F. Marinos on February 19, 2020. Sydney FC subsequently lost that match 4–0. Its next listed group match was a 2–2 draw with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors on March 4.

That disruption is relevant context: the sponsorship was announced for a conventional tournament campaign, but the eventual competition schedule and match environment changed substantially.

What was—and was not—disclosed financially
The announcement provides no reliable basis for calculating the value of the sponsorship. It does not state:
- the contract price;
- the agreement’s full legal term beyond the 2020 campaign;
- whether AETOS had category exclusivity;
- the amount spent on advertising, hospitality or other activation; or
- whether renewal options existed.
As a result, claims about the deal’s return on investment, its effect on Sydney FC’s revenue, or the amount AETOS paid would be speculation unless supported by separate financial disclosures.
What AETOS’s description means for consumers
Sydney FC described AETOS as an Australian forex broker and CFD provider headquartered in Sydney. The 2020 announcement stated that the company was licensed by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission under AFSL 313016 and by the UK Financial Conduct Authority under FCA number 592778.
Those details were part of the company description published in February 2020. They should not be treated as confirmation of AETOS’s regulatory status on a later date without checking the current ASIC or FCA registers.
Nor does a sports partnership amount to a recommendation to open an account, trade forex, or use CFDs. CFDs and leveraged foreign exchange products can produce rapid losses, including losses that may be disproportionate to the initial amount deposited. A potential customer should verify the provider, read the current product disclosure documents, understand the fees and leverage limits, and consider whether the product is appropriate before depositing money.

Do not confuse the 2020 competition with current AFC branding
The event should be referred to by its historical name: AFC Champions League 2020. From the 2024/25 season, the AFC introduced a restructured club-competition system. Its top men’s competition is now the AFC Champions League Elite, commonly abbreviated ACL Elite, while the second-tier competition is the AFC Champions League Two, or ACL Two.
Those newer names do not apply retrospectively to Sydney FC’s 2020 campaign. It was not the AFC Champions League Elite and it was not the AFC Champions League Two.

The February 2020 release verifies the partnership for that campaign only. It does not show that AETOS remained Sydney FC’s AFC partner in 2026, that the arrangement continued after the tournament, or that the company still held the regulatory permissions cited in the historical announcement.
It is also too broad to describe AETOS as Sydney FC’s main shirt sponsor without qualification. The supported description is narrower: AETOS was Principal Partner for the 2020 AFC Champions League campaign, with its branding placed on the front of the club’s home and away kits for that competition.

The Bottom Line
The verified position is narrow: on February 17, 2020, Sydney FC renewed AETOS as Principal Partner for its 2020 AFC Champions League campaign, the third consecutive partnership of that kind. AETOS branding was planned for the fronts of the club’s home and away kits, but the deal’s value and wider commercial terms were not disclosed.
