Helium, Aave, and BlockDAG are not three versions of the same kind of blockchain project. Helium uses blockchain records and token incentives to support community wireless networks; Aave uses smart contracts to run digital-asset lending markets; and BlockDAG’s documentation describes a general-purpose blockchain design built around a directed acyclic graph. Their purposes—and the strength of the available evidence about how they work—are different.
What do the three projects actually do?
| Project | Primary purpose | What a user interacts with | Blockchain’s role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helium | Community wireless connectivity for IoT devices and cellular data offload | Hotspots and wireless services | Records network-related state and supports token incentives and payment for data transmission |
| Aave | Digital-asset liquidity markets | Supplying assets or borrowing against collateral | Smart contracts manage lending-market activity and settlement |
| BlockDAG | General-purpose blockchain execution, as described in its project documentation | Network, token, and smart-contract tooling | Its documentation describes a DAG-based architecture and BDAG token utility |
The comparison is about function, not which token is “better.” Helium connects blockchain systems to physical network infrastructure, Aave applies smart contracts to finance, and BlockDAG presents an alternative blockchain architecture. They are not direct substitutes.
How does Helium use blockchain technology?
Helium is a decentralized physical infrastructure network. Its documentation describes two wireless services: a LoRaWAN network for Internet of Things devices and a Wi-Fi network that can offload cellular data. Community-operated Hotspots provide wireless coverage.
Helium moved from its own purpose-built blockchain to Solana on April 18, 2023. In the current arrangement described by Helium’s documentation, Solana is the on-chain layer. HNT is Helium’s native token: Hotspot hosts and operators can receive HNT rewards, while Data Credits, created by burning HNT and described as dollar-pegged, pay fees for wireless data transmissions.

The architecture is not wholly on-chain. Helium’s network-data documentation describes Solana as holding records such as Hotspot, wallet, account, and token state, while oracles store additional information, including Hotspot earnings and time-series data. That division matters: a public ledger can record important network state without storing every operational detail directly on the chain.
What does a Helium participant use?
A participant may encounter the network as a wireless-service user or as a Hotspot operator. Helium Mobile Hotspots are Wi-Fi hardware intended to offload cellular data from compatible devices; the project describes indoor and outdoor deployments. Operating hardware is participation in a network, not a promise of a particular return. Coverage, usage, token rewards, costs, and local conditions can affect the outcome.
What is Aave, and how does its lending model work?
Aave is a non-custodial liquidity protocol, not a wireless network or a standalone hardware system. Suppliers place digital assets into protocol markets, making liquidity available to borrowers. Borrowers obtain assets by posting collateral worth more than the amount they borrow. Suppliers may earn interest, but rates depend on market conditions and should not be treated as fixed.
In practical terms, a user interacts with a lending market through smart contracts: supplying assets or borrowing against collateral. “Non-custodial” describes the protocol model; it does not mean that using it is risk-free. Collateral does not remove the possibility of liquidation, and smart-contract, market, and asset risks remain relevant.

Aave’s documentation index references version 3 and version 4 contracts, GHO, governance, risk parameters, and integrations. Those references alone do not establish which version is live for a particular deployment, what a specific market’s current terms are, or what return a supplier will receive. Check the applicable market and its current parameters before acting.
What is BlockDAG?
BlockDAG’s documentation describes a blockchain design based on a directed acyclic graph, or DAG. In a conventional single-chain description, blocks are arranged in one sequence; a DAG can represent relationships among multiple blocks without requiring every block to occupy one linear position. The idea is an architectural approach, not proof by itself that a network is faster, more secure, or more widely used.
BlockDAG says its design allows parallel block creation and is intended to improve throughput and confirmation times. Its documentation also lists Solidity compatibility and describes BDAG as the native token for transactions, smart-contract execution, and network security, with Proof-of-Work. These are project-documented design and utility claims. No independent evidence established production status, adoption, measured throughput, or security performance, so advertised benefits should not be treated as demonstrated results.

Best Value
- For connectivity: Helium ties Hotspots and wireless coverage to a token-enabled network. The relevant questions concern service availability, compatible hardware, local coverage, and operating economics.
- For digital-asset lending: Aave provides a way to supply assets or borrow against collateral through protocol markets. Market parameters and liquidation exposure matter more than a headline interest rate.
- For blockchain architecture: BlockDAG’s documentation outlines a DAG-based design and related token functions. Claims about speed, security, and real-world operation need evidence beyond the project’s own technical description.
Token names do not make these projects comparable investments. HNT, AAVE, and BDAG serve different project contexts, and describing a token’s use does not establish its future price or whether participation is suitable for a particular person. Evaluate the actual service, technical evidence, risks, and terms separately from any expectation of token appreciation.
