British Airways plans to resume flights to Melbourne in January 2027, nearly 21 years after ending its previous service in 2006. The new daily, year-round route will connect London Heathrow and Melbourne via Kuala Lumpur; it will not be a nonstop flight. The London-bound and Melbourne-bound services have different launch dates.
When does British Airways start flying to Melbourne?
British Airways’ announced schedule starts with the London-to-Melbourne service, flight BA33, on 9 January 2027. The return service, BA34 from Melbourne to London, is listed to begin on 11 January 2027. These dates differ because they refer to opposite directions of the route.
The flights are planned to operate daily, year-round. The announcement’s timetable gives local times and may change:

Is the new British Airways flight nonstop?
No. BA plans to route the service between London Heathrow and Melbourne through Kuala Lumpur, with a scheduled stop there in each direction. It is a one-stop itinerary, not a nonstop flight. The timetable shows a 1 hour 40 minute interval in Kuala Lumpur on BA33 and a 1 hour 40 minute interval on BA34; these are scheduled intervals, not a guarantee of how the connection will operate on a particular day.
What aircraft and cabins are planned?
British Airways says the route will use its Boeing 787 fleet and lists four cabins: World Traveller (economy), World Traveller Plus (premium economy), Club World (business class) and First. Melbourne Airport identifies the aircraft more specifically as a Boeing 787-9. Because BA’s announcement describes the fleet more broadly, the 787-9 designation should be treated as the airport’s stated detail rather than a separate BA aircraft commitment. What did British Airways say about fares?
When tickets went on sale on 17 March 2026, BA advertised return fares from AUD 1,960. This was an announcement-time starting fare, not a verified current price or a guarantee that seats at that fare remain available. Fares and availability vary; check BA’s booking page for the dates and cabin you want. BA said the Melbourne service would mark its return to the city after ending flights there in 2006 and would be its second Australian route, alongside its existing Sydney–London service at the time of the announcement. It is part of the airline’s broader planned winter 2026 expansion: BA described a 9% increase in long-haul flights operated from London compared with winter 2025. Melbourne Airport separately estimates that an average daily international service contributes around AUD 190 million a year to Victoria’s economy.
