British Airways’ 2026 Speedbird Pilot Academy application window is closed. Applications opened on 14 April and closed on 23 April 2026; BA’s current preparation page confirms the round has ended. The programme offered selected candidates funded pilot training, but this was not a live application opportunity as of 8 October 2026. Anyone interested in a future intake should use BA’s preparation resources and watch its careers channels for an announcement.
What the 2026 Speedbird Pilot Academy offered
British Airways announced £18 million of funding for up to 160 places in the 2026 programme. BA said the training cost covered for each selected candidate was £100,000 over two years. Those figures describe the terms BA announced; funding was not cash paid directly to applicants, and applying did not guarantee selection. BA said successful candidates would have a flying role on completion.
The airline also listed a subsistence allowance and financial support to obtain a UK CAA Class 1 medical and relevant Class 2 medical. BA employee benefits begin when a successful candidate joins, according to its preparation page. Who was eligible for the 2026 round?
BA’s published criteria for this intake were:
- Be aged 17–58 when applying and turn 18 by 1 January 2027.
- Have six GCSEs at grades A–C or 4–9, including Maths, English Language and a Science, or equivalent qualifications.
- Be fluent in English.
- Hold a valid passport permitting unrestricted worldwide travel.
- Meet BA’s stated height range of 1.57m (5’2”) to 1.90m (6’3”). The page says applicants outside that range may be required to complete a functionality check; it does not describe the range as an automatic exclusion.
- Be able to obtain and hold a UK CAA Class 1 medical with no restrictions and meet BA’s medical criteria.
- Complete referencing and pre-employment checks before training starts.
Medical fitness is subject to UK CAA and BA requirements; the criteria are not a substitute for an assessment by the relevant medical professionals. BA may review requirements for a later intake, so these 2026 criteria should not be treated as confirmed future rules.

How to prepare for a possible future opening
BA directs interested candidates to register on its Discover & Prep hub, which offers resources including pilot and cadet stories, FAQs and assessment guidance. Its careers article on becoming a BA pilot also points readers to preparation guidance and the Prep and Apply hub. These are useful starting points while no application window is open.
- Register through BA’s Speedbird Pilot Academy preparation page to access its linked preparation resources.
- Review the current eligibility and assessment guidance rather than relying on old intake details.
- Monitor BA Careers and its job alerts for an official opening announcement. BA says it opens applications once per year, but its April 2026 FAQ says it intends to run a cadet scheme each year and cannot guarantee one. A 2027 intake or its dates have not been confirmed.
How the academy differs from BA’s self-funded routes
BA also describes self-sponsored pathways for aspiring pilots. These are separate from the funded Speedbird academy and require candidates to fund their training themselves.

Being enrolled at one of the named schools is not, by itself, a guarantee of a BA job. Check BA’s Future Pilots information for the route’s terms and eligibility before committing to training costs.

What BA’s figures do—and do not—show
In its 2026 announcement, BA reported that almost 50 pilots had come through the scheme and expected tens of thousands of applicants for that round. The latter was an expectation, not a verified final applicant count. BA also reported that 24% of UK adults said they would have considered becoming an airline pilot if training had been fully funded, while 87% said they had never heard of programmes that cover pilot training. The announcement attributed those percentages to new research but did not identify its publisher or methodology, so they should be read as figures reported by BA, not as independently verified estimates.
