Club figures described interest and talks during the year, but the latest reported position before the deadline was that nothing was imminent. A conversation with a potential investor is not a completed sale.
What was Bristol City’s takeover position in 2025?
The public statements moved from owner Steve Lansdown saying the club was not close to a takeover in February, to reported conversations with potential investors, and then to chief executive Tom Rawcliffe confirming talks with Turki Alalshikh in October. Rawcliffe said there was nothing imminent.
| Date | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 24 February 2025 | BBC Sport reported that Lansdown said, “We’re not close,” referring to a takeover or new investment. He said he had spoken to people over time and would not pass the club to someone who would leverage it. BBC Sport | The owner said a deal was not close at that point. |
| 12 May 2025 | BBC Sport reported that Lansdown had held “very constructive conversations” with potential investors from abroad. BBC Sport | There had been discussions, not a completed sale. |
| 18 September 2025 | Bristol Sport CEO and club director Gavin Marshall called reports of a Saudi takeover “purely speculation.” BBC Sport | The reported Saudi takeover was not confirmed by the club. |
| 16 October 2025 | Rawcliffe confirmed conversations with Turki Alalshikh and said, “At the moment there’s nothing imminent, but we are well backed.” He also said the club had received interest from around the world. BBC Sport | Talks were acknowledged, but no imminent deal was announced. |
Did the Saudi investor buy Bristol City?
No completed purchase by Turki Alalshikh was publicly evidenced by the deadline. The distinction is between confirmed conversations and a transaction: Rawcliffe acknowledged discussions, but did not announce an agreement, completed sale, purchase price or final terms. The September reports of a Saudi takeover had been described by Marshall as speculation.
Rawcliffe said the Lansdown family wanted to sell at some stage and that the club was open to minority or majority investment. Neither possibility was presented as a concluded deal.

Was Bristol City Women’s sale the same as a takeover of the men’s club?

What do the Companies House records show?
Companies House records a share allotment for Bristol City Holdings Limited dated 30 June 2025 and a confirmation statement made on 19 December 2025. The filing-history description does not state the allotment’s purpose or identify it as a takeover. It is therefore not evidence, by itself, that the men’s club changed hands. At a register check on 8 October 2026, Bristol City Holdings Limited was listed as the active person with significant control of Bristol City Football Club Limited, holding 75% or more of its shares and voting rights. The club company’s confirmation statement dated 26 July 2026 was listed as filed with no updates. This describes the recorded ownership at that later check date; it does not establish what may have been discussed privately during 2025. - The public sources cited here do not show a completed sale of the men’s club by 31 December 2025.
- They do not disclose a buyer under contract, a purchase price or final terms for the conversations club officials described.
- The Companies House summary does not explain the recipient or purpose of the June share allotment.
These limits matter: the evidence supports saying no takeover was publicly shown to have completed by the deadline, not claiming that no private or unannounced discussions took place.
