Then use a coordinated mix of channels those people actually pay attention to, and measure both exposure and changes in awareness. Impressions and clicks can show that a campaign was delivered or interacted with; on their own, they do not prove people remember the brand.
Start with the audience and the awareness goal
Define the audience before choosing channels. Specify who you want to reach, where they are, and what they currently know about your brand. A campaign aimed broadly at people outside the intended market can generate exposure without meaningful progress.
Make the intended outcome explicit. Brand awareness is about recognition or familiarity; ad recall asks whether people remember seeing an ad. Consideration, favorability, and purchase intent are related but distinct outcomes. Choose the one that fits the campaign rather than treating every positive signal as awareness.
- Audience: Which customers or prospects should recognize the brand?
- Geography: Where should the campaign run?
- Message: What brand, product, or distinctive idea should people associate with you?
- Timing and resources: What dates and budget can you sustain?
- Measurement: What evidence would indicate increased awareness, not just delivery?
Google Ads Help recommends defining branding goals and selecting placements that can reach as many people as possible within the target audience. That is a targeting principle, not a reason to maximize reach without regard to relevance. Google Ads Help: Measuring brand awareness

Choose channels for audience fit, not by a universal ranking
Potential routes include paid social, brand advertising, video and display, streaming, influencer activity, content marketing, promotions, interactive advertising, and in-person experiences. The right combination depends on where the target audience pays attention, what the message needs to do, and what your team can execute consistently. No source establishes one best channel mix for every brand.
| Channel or tactic | When it may fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Paid social and video/display | When the intended audience is reachable on relevant platforms and the brand can create suitable ads. | Audience overlap, incremental reach, frequency, creative fit, cost, and whether measurement is credible. |
| Influencer activity | When creators have a meaningful connection with the audience and can communicate the brand naturally. | Audience relevance, message control, operational effort, and how exposure or lift will be assessed. |
| Content marketing | When useful material can answer audience questions across the buying process. | Relevance and usefulness, distribution, sustained effort, and whether the content reaches new as well as existing audiences. |
| Promotions | When an offer can give people a timely reason to notice or try the brand. | Whether attention is likely to extend beyond the offer and whether the campaign supports the intended brand message. |
| Streaming and brand advertising | When the format and placement suit the audience and the brand story. | Reach among the target group, exposure frequency, creative suitability, and measurement options. |
| Experiential or interactive advertising | When participation or a memorable experience fits the brand and audience. | Cost and operational demands, audience access, and a practical way to evaluate its effect. |
Amazon Ads identifies these as possible awareness approaches, while LinkedIn’s B2B guidance emphasizes knowing target customers, reaching them at relevant buyer touchpoints, and publishing useful content through the buying process. Plan a connected campaign and its creative
Set the audience, geography, budget, campaign dates, message, and success metric before launch. Coordinate the message across selected channels so people encounter a recognizable brand idea rather than disconnected pieces of content. Channel-specific creative can vary in format while preserving that core idea.
For YouTube awareness and consideration campaigns, Google groups its advice around raising impact, balancing reach and frequency, and broadening exposure to new audiences. It also recommends using a variety of video formats, including horizontal, square, and vertical assets. These are Google-specific recommendations; adapt formats and delivery choices to each channel and audience. Google Ads: Best Practices for Awareness and Consideration Video Campaigns

Reach, impressions, and frequency describe campaign delivery and potential exposure. They are useful for checking whether a campaign reached the intended audience and how often people may have seen it, but they do not establish that people noticed or remembered the brand. Views, likes, and clicks are also not proof of increased awareness.
When the decision warrants it and a suitable study is available, use survey-based brand lift to assess reported awareness, ad recall, consideration, favorability, or purchase intent. In one approach described by Google, a randomized group that saw an ad is compared with a control group that was not shown it; both groups are surveyed. The comparison can help answer questions such as, “Are my target consumers more aware of my brand after viewing my video ad?” or “Did my video ad move people to consider my brand or product?” Think with Google: Brand Lift’s actionable metrics and insights
Pair survey results with behavioral signals such as relevant site traffic or brand searches, while keeping those signals in their proper role: they can add context but do not substitute for a direct awareness measure. Compare results over time or across campaign groups only when the audience, geography, timing, and study design make the comparison meaningful.

Assess channels against audience fit, incremental reach, frequency, creative relevance and freshness, cost, and measured effect. If a channel mostly reaches people who already know the brand, it may contribute less to reaching new prospects. If creative stops attracting attention, refresh it without losing the brand cues people should recognize.
Use the findings to refine audience selection, content, and investment. Favor channels that show relevant additional reach or credible measured lift, rather than reallocating budget solely because one channel produced more clicks. Results from different platforms or studies are not automatically comparable: their regions, audiences, and measurement methods can differ.
TikTok reports that campaigns reaching at least 40% of their target audience were associated with 26% higher brand awareness versus average campaigns in its 2024 North America Brand Lift Study and 2023–2024 North America Power Slides analysis. This is platform-reported, region-specific evidence, not a guarantee or universal reach threshold. TikTok also calls an average weekly frequency of 3 times a “sweet spot” for efficiently improving ad recall and awareness in its global Brand Lift Analysis covering January 2025–February 2026. That is a vendor recommendation from its platform analysis, not a universal frequency prescription. Quick Recap
Common measurement mistakes to avoid
- Counting exposure as memory: Impressions and reach show delivery, not recall.
- Using clicks as the awareness result: Clicks indicate an action, not necessarily recognition or familiarity.
- Chasing reach outside the target audience: Broad exposure is weak evidence if it does not reach the people the brand is trying to influence.
- Comparing unlike studies: Platform results may use different regions, audiences, and study designs.
- Applying a vendor recommendation universally: Platform-specific figures and guidance should inform tests, not replace judgment about the audience and campaign.
