Why Does Brandy Melville Carry One Size? What Its Reported Rationale Actually Is

The reported explanation for Brandy Melville’s one-size approach comes from an anonymous former executive—not a public company defense. Here is what the 2024 coverage says, and what it does not establish.

The available reporting does not show Brandy Melville publicly defending its one-size approach. The closest explanation comes from an anonymous former executive interviewed for a 2024 documentary: the executive described the policy as a business tactic to preserve exclusivity and associate the brand with a very thin aesthetic. That is a former executive’s account, not an on-the-record statement from the company.

What the reported rationale is—and who gave it

TIME reported on April 12, 2024, that an anonymous former executive interviewed in the documentary Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion characterized the sizing approach as an explicit tactic to keep the brand “exclusive” and tied to a very thin aesthetic. TIME also said Brandy Melville did not comment for the documentary and that founder Stephan Marsan was not interviewed. TIME’s explainer therefore provides a reported rationale from a former executive, not a public defense by the company.

The distinction matters: the available coverage does not establish why the company itself says it carries one size, because it does not include a direct company explanation.

What “one size” meant in the 2024 coverage

The Guardian described Brandy Melville garments as sold in “one size fits all,” while TIME said most clothing had long been offered in one relatively small size, approximately U.S. XS/S. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement used the phrase “one size fits most” when describing the documentary’s subject. These are descriptions and slogans in the coverage, not proof that the clothes fit all or most bodies.

Those accounts are from 2024, not a current audit of every item. The reviewed sources do not provide an authoritative current size range or a complete garment-measurement dataset, so an individual item’s fit cannot be inferred from the phrase “one size.” The Guardian’s report and TIME’s explainer describe the brand’s sizing in that period.

What customers and former employees reported

TIME reported that customers posted about being unable to fit into the clothes, and that former employees described feeling pressure to fit the brand’s clothing. The Guardian likewise summarized the documentary as examining the brand’s appeal to young customers and former employees’ accounts. These are reported experiences, not evidence that every customer or employee had the same experience.

How sizing fits into the wider criticism

The Guardian placed the controversy in the context of fast fashion and overproduction. Documentary director Eva Orner told the paper, “There are too many clothes on the planet. We overproduce.” She also said that 100 billion garments are produced globally each year and that most enter landfill within the first year. That figure is Orner’s statement as quoted by The Guardian; the article does not identify an underlying statistical source for it.

One-size sizing alone does not establish a company’s environmental or labor outcomes. The Guardian also reported historical sales estimates attributed to the Wall Street Journal—$212.5 million in 2023, compared with $169.6 million in 2019—but those estimates do not show current sales or explain the sizing policy.
