Boeing’s September Tentative Deal Didn’t End the St. Louis-Area Machinists Strike

The September tentative offer did not end the Boeing Defense strike. IAM members rejected it, and a separate November contract ratification brought the walkout to a close.

Boeing and IAM District 837 announced a tentative five-year offer in September 2025, about five weeks into the St. Louis-area strike. But union members rejected it on September 12, and the strike continued until a separate contract was ratified on November 13. Workers could begin returning on November 16.

What happened to the September tentative deal?

It was not the settlement that ended the strike. The tentative offer was rejected by IAM District 837 members, who voted to remain on strike. At the time, Boeing Air Dominance vice president and general manager Dan Gillian described the offer as one that would grow wages by 45% on average, according to the St. Louis American. That figure describes the September offer as characterized in the contemporaneous report—not the terms of the eventual agreement.

IAM said members rejected Boeing’s modified five-year offer because it did not provide a sufficient signing bonus compared with what other Boeing workers received or an increase in 401(k) benefits. The union announced the vote on September 12. (IAM District 837)

How did the strike end?

The strike began August 4, 2025, and involved approximately 3,200 IAM District 837 members at Boeing Defense facilities in the St. Louis region, including sites in St. Louis and St. Charles, Missouri, and Mascoutah, Illinois. (IAM District 837)

After the September rejection, union members ratified a union-proposed four-year proposal on September 19. That vote did not settle the dispute: the proposal was pre-ratified and sent to Boeing for acceptance, and IAM said members remained on strike. (IAM District 837)

The stoppage ended only after members ratified a new agreement on November 13. IAM announced, “IAM District 837 Members: Our strike has officially ended.” Workers could begin returning November 16. (IAM District 837; IAM District 837 message)

What were the final contract terms?

The September offer and the strike-ending agreement were different offers. The Associated Press reported that the final ratified agreement was a five-year contract with a 24% wage increase across the contract and a $6,000 signing bonus, citing the union. AP also reported that workers had rejected four earlier offers. Those final-contract figures should not be confused with Gillian’s September description of the tentative offer. (Associated Press)
