The Manhattan townhouse most recently reported as Bob Dylan’s former home is at 265 West 139th Street in Harlem, on Strivers’ Row. It sold for $2.8 million on June 25, 2026, according to the closed listing. That is a different property from the Turtle Bay townhouse at 242 East 49th Street, which has also been associated with Dylan.
Where is Bob Dylan’s former Manhattan townhouse?
The house is at 265 West 139th Street in Harlem, within Strivers’ Row and the St. Nicholas Historic District. The address matters: stories about a separate Dylan-associated townhouse at 242 East 49th Street concern Turtle Bay, not this Harlem property.

Strivers’ Row is a historic residential enclave in Harlem. The neighborhood association says the St. Nicholas Historic District was designated in 1967 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Those dates refer to the district; the sources cited here do not establish a separate designation date for 265 West 139th Street itself. Strivers’ Row association
What was Bob Dylan’s connection to the Harlem house?
Reports say Dylan lived at 265 West 139th Street from 1986 to 2000, then sold it in 2000 for $560,000. The Strivers’ Row association describes his ownership as 14 years; the occupancy dates and sale price are reported by 6sqft and Sotheby’s International Realty. The period is best understood as a reported timeline, rather than a claim that the exact move-in and move-out dates are known.

The closed listing reports a sale price of $2.8 million on June 25, 2026. Sotheby’s sale report says the home originally went on the market in 2025 asking $3 million. What is known about the home’s architecture and features?
Sotheby’s and the listing describe the five-bedroom house as built in 1893 and designed by Stanford White. The Strivers’ Row association describes the north side of West 139th Street as a group of Italian Renaissance Revival buildings designed by White’s firm, McKim, Mead & White. These are related descriptions: one addresses this specific house, while the association characterizes the row’s broader architectural group.
Sotheby’s describes the house as roughly 4,500 square feet across four floors and a cellar, with period moldings, restored hardwood floors, pocket doors, six decorative fireplaces, and a wood-paneled entry vestibule. The listing also advertises zoned central HVAC, radiant-heated bathrooms, and a gated carport. Those feature details come from sale and listing materials, rather than an independent inspection.

How does the Harlem house differ from Dylan’s Turtle Bay townhouse?
The title “Bob Dylan’s former Manhattan townhouse” can point to more than one address. The reported Harlem home is the property that sold in June 2026. Realtor.com describes a separate five-story townhouse at 242 East 49th Street in Turtle Bay, where Dylan reportedly lived in the 1970s and again in the 1990s. It reports that he bought that property in 1990 for $1.45 million and sold it in 2006 for $4.45 million. Realtor.com
| Address | Neighborhood | Reported Dylan timeline | Reported transaction history |
|---|---|---|---|
| 265 West 139th Street | Harlem; Strivers’ Row | Reportedly lived there from 1986 to 2000 | Reportedly sold in 2000 for $560,000 and in 2026 for $2.8 million |
| 242 East 49th Street | Turtle Bay | Reportedly lived there in the 1970s and again in the 1990s | Realtor.com reports a 1990 purchase for $1.45 million and a 2006 sale for $4.45 million |
The figures describe separate properties and different reporting histories. They should not be read as a direct comparison of investment returns: that would require accounting for intervening sales, renovations, inflation, and the limits of the underlying reports.

Can visitors see Strivers’ Row?
The Strivers’ Row association says walking tours are available, but it does not identify a current operator or route, or establish that a tour visits Dylan’s former home. Visitors interested in the architecture can use the association’s site for district information and should confirm current tour details with any provider before making plans.
