Trading 212 is usually the better fit for an eligible beginner who wants simple, long-term investing in shares and ETFs. Interactive Brokers is stronger for investors who need international market access, options, futures, bonds, spot FX, short selling, advanced order types or API access.
There is also an immediate eligibility issue: Trading 212’s current supported-country list does not include the United States, while Interactive Brokers accepts U.S. residents. For a U.S. investor, the comparison is effectively decided before fees and features are considered.
This comparison focuses on Trading 212’s Invest and ISA services, not its separate CFD platform as a substitute for owning investments.
Trading 212 vs Interactive Brokers at a glance
| Investor type | Better choice | Main reason |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. resident | Interactive Brokers | Trading 212 does not currently list the U.S. as a supported country. |
| Beginner investing regularly in shares and ETFs | Trading 212 | Its app, fractional investing, Pies and AutoInvest are easier to use. |
| UK buy-and-hold investor using mainly UK and U.S. investments | Trading 212 for simplicity; IBKR for breadth | Trading 212 has free dealing and custody, while IBKR offers more markets and control. |
| Frequent or active trader | Interactive Brokers | It offers more order types, routing options, platforms and trading tools. |
| Options, futures, bonds, spot FX or short selling | Interactive Brokers | These products and permissions are not available through Trading 212 Invest or ISA. |
| Automated portfolio investing | Trading 212 | Pies and AutoInvest are built into the investing app. |
| Investor expecting to need more flexibility later | Interactive Brokers | Its broader product range, account structures, platforms and APIs offer more room to expand. |
Availability comes first
Trading 212 is available to residents of the UK, Australia, several European countries and other listed jurisdictions. The United States is not currently on its published supported-country list.
#1 Best Overall
Interactive Brokers lists the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, much of Europe and many other countries. The specific products available to an account still depend on residence, regulatory eligibility, account type and permissions.
So, if you live in the U.S., Interactive Brokers is the relevant option of the two. If you live elsewhere, the more important questions are what you want to invest in, how much control you need and whether you value simplicity over range.
What can you invest in?
Trading 212
Trading 212 separates its services into different account types:
- Invest: shares, ETFs, ETPs, ETCs, REITs and investment trusts.
- Stocks ISA: the UK tax-advantaged version of its investing service.
- SIPP: a UK personal pension account.
- CFD: leveraged contracts that track an instrument rather than giving you ownership of the underlying asset.
Trading 212’s Invest and ISA accounts are designed primarily for buying and holding investments. Its CFD service adds forex, stocks, ETFs, index futures, commodity futures, forex futures and, for certain entities, cryptocurrency CFDs. CFDs are a separate, leveraged product. Trading 212 currently reports that 77% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with the provider, according to its instrument information.
Interactive Brokers
Interactive Brokers supports a substantially wider range of products, including:
- Stocks and ETFs
- Options
- Futures and futures options
- Spot currencies
- Bonds
- Mutual funds
- Warrants and structured products
- Cryptocurrency services where available
- Certain prediction or event contracts
Product access is not automatic. You may need to apply for permissions, meet suitability requirements or satisfy local regulatory rules. Nevertheless, IBKR is the more suitable platform if your strategy may eventually involve options, futures, bonds, margin, short selling or direct currency trading.
Fees: Trading 212 is simpler, but not completely free
Trading 212 Invest, ISA and SIPP charges
Trading 212 currently lists the following provider charges for its Invest, ISA and SIPP accounts:
| Charge | Trading 212 rate |
|---|---|
| Trading commission | Free |
| Custody fee | Free |
| Foreign-exchange fee | 0.15% |
Free dealing does not eliminate every cost. Exchange, tax and regulatory charges can still apply. Examples listed by Trading 212 include:

- U.S. SEC transaction fees and FINRA fees on covered sales.
- French Financial Transaction Tax of 0.4% on purchases of qualifying French companies.
Trading 212 shows applicable charges on the Review order screen before you confirm a trade.
Trading 212 deposit charges
For Invest and ISA accounts, card payments, Apple Pay, Google Pay, OpenBankingPL and Klarna are free until your cumulative deposits through those methods reach £2,000 or €2,000. After that threshold, Trading 212 charges 0.7% on those payment methods.
The threshold is cumulative; it does not reset after each deposit. Bank transfers and Instant Bank Transfers remain free, and withdrawals are free. CFD deposits remain fee-free according to Trading 212’s current funding-fee documentation. Using a bank transfer is therefore a straightforward way to avoid the card-payment charge.
Interactive Brokers commissions
IBKR pricing depends on your country, security, exchange, pricing plan, order size and trading volume. For U.S. residents, the broad outline is:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- IBKR Lite: $0 commission on eligible U.S. exchange-listed stocks and ETFs.
- IBKR Pro Fixed: generally $0.005 per U.S. stock or ETF share, with a $1 minimum and a maximum of 1% of trade value.
- IBKR Pro Tiered: a base rate ranging from $0.0005 to $0.0035 per share depending on monthly volume, with a $0.35 minimum per order, plus exchange, clearing and regulatory charges.
IBKR Lite is not a global commission-free plan. Its $0 U.S. stock and ETF pricing is restricted to eligible residents and account types, principally in the U.S. and Singapore. Many non-U.S. customers will use IBKR Pro pricing instead.
Interactive Brokers currently lists a $0 account minimum and $0 inactivity fee for ordinary Individual, Joint, Trust and Organization accounts under both IBKR Pro and Lite. The widely repeated warning that ordinary IBKR customers must pay an inactivity fee is outdated. Separate broker, adviser, institutional or connectivity arrangements can have different terms.
Foreign exchange: the difference matters more with international investing
Trading 212 Invest is a multi-currency account. It can hold currencies including GBP, USD, EUR, CAD, CHF, DKK, NOK, PLN, SEK, CZK, RON and HUF. Trading 212 charges 0.15% when you convert funds and says it uses the live interbank rate without an additional spread or markup. Weekend conversions use the last available weekday interbank rate because the interbank market is closed.
There is an important exception to understand: Pies do not support multiple currencies. Pie orders use your account’s primary currency. If the Pie buys a security denominated in another currency, the required conversion takes place and the applicable FX fee is charged.
Recommended Free Tools
Interactive Brokers also supports multi-currency trading and publishes separate spot-FX commissions. Its current spot-FX commission is listed at 0.08–0.20 basis points multiplied by trade value, subject to applicable minimums and the relevant schedule.
For a small investor converting money occasionally, Trading 212’s 0.15% charge is easier to calculate. For large conversions or frequent currency trading, IBKR may be more competitive, but you need to compare the actual currency pair, transaction size and account jurisdiction rather than relying on a headline rate.
Fractional shares
Trading 212 supports fractional trading across most instruments available in its Invest and ISA accounts. Fractional market, limit, stop and stop-limit orders are supported where applicable. Trading 212 holds the corresponding whole shares collectively for customers and executes fractional orders against the reference-exchange price.
Fractional holdings receive proportional dividends and participate proportionally in stock splits. Trading 212 also describes proportional voting treatment through proxy voting. Fractions cannot be transferred to another broker; the fractional part generally has to be sold first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Interactive Brokers advertises fractional trading on more than 10,500 U.S. stocks and ETFs, with eligible U.S., Canadian and European securities available from as little as $1 where supported. Its disclosure says fractional shares cannot be transferred to another broker and may need to be liquidated during an account transfer. That can create tax consequences and commission charges.
IBKR’s fractional-share disclosure also differs from Trading 212’s description of voting: IBKR says customers do not have voting rights for fractional shares, although dividends and mandatory corporate actions are handled proportionally.
Automated investing: Trading 212 has the clearer advantage
Trading 212’s Pies let you create a portfolio with target allocations. A Custom Pie can contain up to 50 instruments. You can also use Model Pies or Social Pies, although ready-made allocations are not personalised financial advice.
The default distribution method is currently Self-Balancing. New money is directed towards underweight slices instead of buying every slice in exact target proportions. The alternative is By Targets.
Useful current app paths include:
- To create a Pie, go to Investments → + Create a pie.
- To add AutoInvest to an existing Pie, open the Pie and use its settings.
- To invest regularly in one stock or ETF, open its details page and tap AutoInvest.
- To see active plans, go to Portfolio → AutoInvest.
- To change holdings, go to Holdings → Edit Pie.
- To import existing investments, open the Pie, tap the three dots and choose Import Investments.
Pie schedules include daily, weekly, every two weeks, monthly, every two months and every six months. Single-instrument AutoInvest supports daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly schedules, with monthly dates limited to the 1st through 28th. Trading 212 says AutoInvest runs at 08:00 Central European Time.
Two details can catch users out:
- Changing target percentages does not itself buy or sell anything. The change takes effect when you manually rebalance or when the Pie receives new investment under its rules.
- Small amounts can remain in Pie Cash when an order falls below the applicable minimum order size.
IBKR offers recurring investment features and fractional trading in supported markets, but its core strength is flexibility and execution control rather than a beginner-focused portfolio-builder. If your priority is “pay in every month and let the app allocate the money”, Trading 212 is easier to operate.
Order types and execution
Trading 212 Invest and ISA accounts support market, limit, stop and stop-limit orders for relevant securities. For example, a limit order can be placed by selecting an instrument, tapping Buy, choosing Limit, entering the quantity and price, then selecting Review and Send Order.
A Trading 212 stop order becomes a market order when triggered. It therefore does not guarantee the stop price. During a gap or fast-moving market, the final execution price can be materially worse.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A stop-limit order gives you a price limit, but it can remain unfilled if the market moves beyond that limit. It is not a guaranteed exit either.
Also avoid treating every displayed chart price as an executable quote. Trading 212 says Invest and ISA charts use the Last Trade Price from external financial sources. That price is not tied directly to the execution of your order. CFD charts show the actual buy and sell prices used for CFD execution.
Interactive Brokers provides a much larger selection of order types, routing choices and algorithmic tools. IBKR Mobile supports advanced order types, algorithmic trading and flexible routing, while Trader Workstation provides the deepest set of controls. That matters to active traders, but it also creates more settings that a new investor can misconfigure.
Platforms and ease of use
Trading 212
Trading 212 is primarily app-led. The basic workflow is short:
- Search for an instrument.
- Choose Buy or Sell.
- Enter a share quantity or cash amount.
- Select the order type.
- Review and confirm.
Pies, AutoInvest and the cash-interest settings are integrated into the same app. To use practice mode, go to Menu → Switch to practice. The practice account provides a virtual fund limit of $50,000, according to Trading 212’s practice-mode documentation.
Rank #4
Interactive Brokers
IBKR now offers several interfaces rather than forcing every customer into its most complicated platform:
- Client Portal: browser-based account management and trading.
- IBKR Desktop: a newer desktop platform aimed at beginner-to-intermediate users.
- IBKR Mobile: mobile trading with advanced functionality.
- Trader Workstation: the full platform for experienced and active traders.
- IBKR GlobalTrader: a simpler mobile experience.
- APIs: including TWS API and Client Portal API access.
The old description of IBKR as having only one intimidating desktop platform is no longer accurate. However, IBKR still exposes more products, permissions, market-data choices, order controls and account settings than Trading 212. That is useful when you need them and unnecessary complexity when you do not.
Interest on uninvested cash
Trading 212 has an Interest on cash dashboard. The current path is Menu → Interest on cash. Open that area, follow the instructions and tap Enable to activate it.
Trading 212 says interest is calculated at 22:00 GMT and distributed between 01:00 and 02:00 GMT. Depending on the account entity and customer election, uninvested cash may be held in banks or qualifying money market funds.
The applicable rate is not necessarily the one shown in a general advertisement. Trading 212 says rates on its website apply to new clients; existing customers should check the Interest tab in the app. German residents onboarded to Trading 212 EU GmbH have a jurisdiction-specific change from 5 January 2026: interest applies only to EUR cash balances, and non-EUR balances no longer accrue interest.
IBKR’s cash interest depends on currency, balance size, account entity, account type and thresholds. It publishes separate rates for IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro. Compare the rate and eligibility for your actual account rather than assuming that all idle cash earns the headline rate.
Protection if the broker fails
Protection depends on the legal entity holding your account. It is not accurate to quote one universal “Trading 212 protection” or “IBKR protection” figure.

| Trading 212 Markets Ltd | Cyprus Investors Compensation Fund up to €20,000. | Normal investment losses. |

Trading 212’s UK investment-protection limit is a combined £85,000 for investments and cash in the relevant failure scenario; it is not £85,000 for shares plus another £85,000 for cash.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Trading 212 use Interactive Brokers?
Trading 212’s UK and EU documentation identifies Interactive Brokers and Bank of New York Mellon among its custody partners. That does not make a Trading 212 account equivalent to a direct IBKR account.
A Trading 212 customer contracts with Trading 212, uses its app and pricing, and is subject to the relevant Trading 212 legal entity and compensation regime. A direct IBKR customer contracts with the applicable Interactive Brokers entity and receives IBKR’s own platforms, fees, permissions and reporting.
Custody-provider overlap is therefore not a reason to assume that the two brokers offer the same service.

Which broker is better for you?
Choose Trading 212 if:
- You are an eligible UK, European or Australian resident.
- You mainly want shares and ETFs rather than complex derivatives.
- You want to invest small sums using fractional shares.
- You prefer a mobile-first interface.
- You want Pies and scheduled AutoInvest contributions.
- You value free dealing and custody and can manage the 0.15% FX charge.
Choose Interactive Brokers if:
- You live in the U.S. or another country where Trading 212 is unavailable.
- You need options, futures, bonds, mutual funds, spot FX or short selling.
- You want access to a larger selection of international markets.
- You need margin, advanced order types, algorithmic execution or SmartRouting.
- You want professional desktop software or API access.
- You expect your strategy to become more complex over time.
For a straightforward monthly portfolio, IBKR’s extra capability may add little practical value. For an investor who actively trades, diversifies across currencies or wants one broker that can support more advanced strategies, Trading 212’s narrower product set may become restrictive.
The Bottom Line
Trading 212 is better for most eligible beginners and hands-off UK or European investors who want an uncomplicated way to buy shares and ETFs, invest fractionally and automate contributions.
Interactive Brokers is better for investors who need breadth, control or international flexibility. Its product range, market access, order handling, platforms and APIs make it the more capable long-term platform for active or sophisticated strategies.
For a U.S. resident, the practical answer is Interactive Brokers because Trading 212’s current supported-country list excludes the United States. For everyone else, choose based on the investments and tools you will actually use—not simply on the fact that Trading 212 may use Interactive Brokers as one of its custody partners.

Is Trading 212 cheaper than Interactive Brokers?
For simple Invest or ISA dealing, Trading 212 is easier to price: dealing and custody are free, while FX costs 0.15%. It can still pass on taxes, exchange charges and regulatory fees, and some card deposits cost 0.7% after the cumulative £2,000 or €2,000 threshold. IBKR pricing depends on the country, product, exchange and pricing plan. Its U.S. IBKR Lite service can be commission-free for eligible U.S. stock and ETF trades, but that does not apply worldwide.
Can U.S. residents use Trading 212?
Trading 212’s current supported-country list does not include the United States. Interactive Brokers accepts U.S. residents, subject to its account-opening and product-eligibility rules.
Is Interactive Brokers suitable for beginners?
It can be. IBKR now offers simpler options such as IBKR Desktop and GlobalTrader alongside its advanced Trader Workstation. However, it still presents more products, permissions and order settings than Trading 212. A beginner who only wants regular share and ETF investing may find Trading 212 easier to navigate.
Does Trading 212 offer options or futures?
Trading 212 Invest and ISA accounts do not offer options or futures as owned investments. Trading 212’s separate CFD service includes certain futures-based instruments, but CFDs are leveraged contracts and do not provide ownership of the underlying asset. Interactive Brokers offers options, futures and futures options where available and permitted.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does Interactive Brokers charge an inactivity fee?
IBKR currently lists a $0 inactivity fee and $0 account minimum for ordinary Individual, Joint, Trust and Organization accounts under both IBKR Pro and Lite. Different broker, adviser, institutional or connectivity arrangements can have separate terms.
Which broker is better for fractional shares?
Both support fractional investing, but they differ in scope and treatment. Trading 212 supports fractions across most eligible Invest and ISA instruments and describes proportional voting treatment through proxy voting. IBKR advertises fractional trading on more than 10,500 U.S. stocks and ETFs, but its disclosure says fractional shares do not carry voting rights. Fractions generally cannot be transferred to another broker.
Are Trading 212 Pies automatically rebalanced?
Not whenever you edit the targets. Changing a Pie’s percentages does not itself buy or sell holdings. You need to rebalance manually or invest new money according to the Pie’s rules. Under the current default Self-Balancing method, new money is directed towards underweight slices.
Are Trading 212 CFDs the same as investing through Interactive Brokers?
No. A Trading 212 CFD is a leveraged contract tracking an instrument; it is not ownership of the underlying share or ETF. Interactive Brokers offers direct investment products as well as margin and derivatives, subject to permissions. These are different account relationships and risk profiles.
