Boeing flew 737 MAX aircraft back from China in April 2025 after Chinese customers paused deliveries amid escalating US–China tariffs. At the time, Reuters reported no official Chinese confirmation of a formal aircraft-import ban; tariffs and the customer response appeared to make deliveries commercially impractical. The pause was temporary: Boeing later said deliveries to affected customers had resumed.
Why did Boeing fly 737 MAX aircraft back from China?
The aircraft were at Boeing’s Zhoushan completion center near Shanghai, where jets assembled in the United States received final work before delivery to Chinese airlines. As the US–China tariff conflict escalated, customers stopped accepting aircraft. One 737 MAX departed for Guam on April 18, 2025, on what appeared to be the first leg of a return flight to Seattle.
On April 23, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said two of the three aircraft in China that were ready for delivery had been brought back to Seattle. He said Chinese customers had “stopped taking delivery of aircraft due to the the tariff environment,” as reported by the Associated Press. The aircraft return was a response to a trade-driven delivery interruption, not a new 737 MAX technical grounding.
Did China formally ban Boeing aircraft deliveries?
“Ban” can describe either a government order prohibiting imports or the practical effect of tariffs and customers declining to accept aircraft. April reporting established the latter more clearly than the former. Reuters said Beijing had made no official comment confirming a formal aircraft ban; industry sources told the news agency that tariffs could nevertheless block deliveries in practice. That reporting does not prove that no government instruction existed—it means a formal prohibition had not been publicly confirmed in the accounts available at the time.

The distinction matters: a customer pause caused by the tariff environment is not the same as an announced government prohibition. Ortberg’s account attributed the stoppage to customers’ response to tariffs, while Boeing’s later filing described a pause during tariff negotiations.
What happened to the aircraft, and did deliveries resume?
Boeing considered redirecting aircraft
On April 23, Ortberg said Boeing would “redirect the supply to the stable demand, and we’re not going to continue to build aircraft for customers who will not take them.” That described Boeing’s option at the time, not proof that each returned aircraft was ultimately sold or delivered to another buyer.

Deliveries restarted after the tariff pause
Boeing’s second-quarter 2025 Form 10-Q later said that certain customers had paused deliveries during tariff negotiations and that “deliveries to those customers have since resumed.” The filing confirms that the interruption did not continue indefinitely, but it does not establish the final destination of every aircraft that had been returned.
Reuters reported on July 8, 2025, that Boeing delivered eight aircraft to Chinese customers in June, including five 737 MAX jets. That June figure is a later delivery snapshot; it should not be added to the two aircraft Ortberg said had been returned in April as though the numbers covered one continuous group.

What the episode means for Boeing and China
Boeing’s 2025 Form 10-K describes China as a significant market for commercial aircraft. The April disruption therefore showed how a trade dispute could interrupt deliveries even when aircraft were built and ready to hand over. Boeing’s stated response included the possibility of redirecting aircraft toward other demand, while its later filing and June delivery data show that shipments to Chinese customers resumed.
The available figures answer different questions: Ortberg’s April count described ready aircraft brought back to Seattle; the June total described aircraft delivered to Chinese customers during that month. They are not a complete accounting of all aircraft affected by the pause.
