Phil Alexander was reported as linked with Blackburn Rovers’ chief executive search in March 2026, but the club did not announce him as its CEO. On 23 May, Blackburn announced Steve Curwood’s appointment, with a planned start date of 1 July.
What was reported about Phil Alexander?
On 9 March 2026, The72’s James Ray reported that Blackburn Rovers had added Fleetwood Town’s Steve Curwood to its CEO shortlist, citing reporter Alan Nixon. The same article said Alexander, described as a former Crystal Palace and Bristol City executive, “has already been linked.” Read The72’s report.
That wording establishes a reported link, not that Blackburn offered Alexander the position, appointed him, or that he turned it down. The report did not identify a formal approach or provide confirmation from the club.
Who did Blackburn Rovers appoint?
Blackburn Rovers announced Steve Curwood as its CEO on 23 May 2026 and said he was due to join on 1 July. In the club’s announcement, Curwood said: “I’m delighted to be joining Blackburn Rovers.” See the club’s appointment announcement.

The announcement describes Curwood’s Fleetwood Town experience, including involvement in the club’s development, and his service on the EFL Board and as a Professional Game representative with The FA. It confirms the appointment announcement and intended start date; it does not establish who holds the role on 8 October 2026.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
| Claim | Source and date | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Alexander was linked with Blackburn’s CEO search | The72 report, 9 March 2026 | Secondary reporting that he had been linked; no confirmed offer or appointment. |
| Curwood was appointed as CEO | Blackburn Rovers announcement, 23 May 2026 | The club announced Curwood’s appointment and said he was due to join on 1 July. |
These are different levels of confirmation: Alexander’s connection appeared in reporting, while Curwood’s appointment was announced by the club. The available sources do not compare the candidates’ qualifications or explain the club’s selection process.
