As of October 8, 2026, the sources cited here do not establish whether the promised Black Myth: Wukong expansion is still in development or when it might arrive. The “18 million” milestone came from a September 5, 2024 report: GameSpot, citing Bloomberg, said the game had sold 18 million copies in two weeks. The same report relayed an investor’s statement that an expansion was “on the way,” but gave no schedule or details.
What the September 2024 report confirmed
On September 5, 2024, GameSpot reported, citing Bloomberg, that Black Myth: Wukong had sold 18 million copies in two weeks. The game had launched worldwide on August 20, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PC, including Steam and the Epic Games Store, and for WeGame in China, according to Gematsu.
GameSpot said Daniel Wu, an investor in developer Game Science through Hero Games, told Bloomberg that he expected the game could sell 30 million copies over its lifetime. That was a forecast, not a reported final total. Wu also said an expansion was “that’s on the way.” GameSpot provided no further expansion details, so the statement did not amount to a release-date announcement or description of its content.
Is the expansion still coming?
The cited reporting does not settle that question. It records an expansion expectation voiced in September 2024, but does not confirm its status as of October 8, 2026. There is no basis in these reports to call the expansion released, canceled, or assigned a launch window.

That distinction matters because later news about the franchise concerns a separate game. On August 19, 2025, PC Gamer reported that Game Science had revealed Black Myth: Zhong Kui as the second entry in the Black Myth series. The report described a distinct project and said the studio was still exploring how it should play differently from Wukong. It is not evidence that the Wukong expansion was released or canceled.

The 18-million figure is a dated milestone, not a current sales total. A January 2025 report by Game World Observer cited Niko Partners for more than 25 million global copies sold. That is a later, still-dated figure; it does not establish the game’s total in October 2026.

GameSpot also reported in June 2025 that official figures referenced in a press release put sales at 10 million copies in three days. That earlier launch milestone is not a replacement for the 18-million figure, which was reported for the first two weeks. Wu’s 30-million estimate remains a forecast rather than an observed sales result.
Wu characterized the game’s significance in his own terms: “Wukong proves not only that we have top-notch game-making capabilities, but also we can tell a good story with Chinese elements.” This is his assessment as an investor, not an independent evaluation.
