The core business features are essentially the same. The difference is how change history is handled: standard TallyPrime lets a business configure Edit Log, while TallyPrime Edit Log keeps it permanently enabled and does not let users switch it off. Choose between them based on your audit-trail needs—not because you expect a different accounting or inventory system.

What TallyPrime and TallyPrime Edit Log do
TallyPrime is Tally’s business-management software. Depending on the release, license and market, it supports accounting, inventory, payroll, taxation and compliance workflows, business reports, banking and connected services. TallyPrime Edit Log uses the same core product capabilities; it is not a separate accounting engine or a feature bundle that adds a different general ledger, inventory system or payroll package. In standard TallyPrime, the administrator can configure Edit Log according to the business’s needs. TallyPrime Edit Log is the distinct edition for businesses that want that history to remain on continuously. Edit Log itself was introduced in TallyPrime Release 2.1; the release-wise feature history describes tracking changes to transactions and masters.

What Edit Log records—and what it does not
For supported transactions and masters, Edit Log can record creation, alteration and deletion activity, along with the user and date and time. Users can inspect versions and compare changes to see the differences between earlier and later records. Supported masters include items such as ledgers, stock items and groups. Tally explains the available history and comparison views in its documentation for masters and transactions.
Three things should not be conflated: opening the current record, seeing that activity occurred, and comparing the actual values between versions. A saved version may appear without a meaningful difference to drill into if the data did not change. Also, Tally notes that the Company Edit Log report tracks company activities affecting transaction and master logs, but Company Alteration changes are not tracked in the same way. A log improves traceability; it does not itself prove a change was authorized, that supporting documents exist, or that a reviewer examined it. Nor does it replace access controls, backups, retention procedures or coverage of external systems. Tracking a deleted transaction is not the same as restoring it or reversing its accounting effect.
Can you enable or disable Edit Log?
In standard TallyPrime, Edit Log can be configured. In TallyPrime Edit Log, it cannot be disabled. That difference matters more than the product names suggest: having a configurable log available is not equivalent to enforcing an uninterrupted log.

Tally’s documented setup instructions for standard TallyPrime give this general path, though menu labels and layouts may differ by release:
- Open the company in TallyPrime.
- Open Company Menu with Alt+K, then choose Alter.
- Press F12 to open configuration and enable Set Edit Log Applicability.
- In the company-alteration screen, set Enable Edit Log to Yes.
The menu path is documented in Tally’s audit-trail guide. Confirm the labels in your installed release before changing a live company. Enabling Edit Log records subsequent changes; it does not reconstruct a complete history of earlier activity, as Tally’s master and transaction instructions clarify.

How to view and compare a change
- Use TallyPrime Edit Log, or first enable Edit Log if you are using standard TallyPrime.
- Open the relevant master or voucher in alteration mode.
- Press Alt+Q to open Edit Log.
- Review the version, activity, username and date/time.
- Select a version and press Enter to compare it with the previous version. Use F12 for relevant display configuration.
Tally documents the workflow and notes that a resaved version without a data difference may not offer a meaningful drill-down in its Edit Log instructions.

Permanent logging also has an operational cost. As alterations accumulate, Edit Log data and overall company-data size can grow. Automatic voucher renumbering may create logs for subsequent vouchers, particularly after inserting or deleting vouchers. Plan storage and backups, set voucher-numbering practices deliberately, and train users to avoid unnecessary resaves or mass alterations. These data-growth considerations are covered in Tally’s modification-tracking documentation.
Migration, release and regional checks
Tally says an upgrade from an earlier TallyPrime version can start TallyPrime Edit Log in licensed mode, while users of TallyPrime or Tally.ERP 9 may need to migrate company data. That is not a promise that every company can switch editions without release-specific steps. Before migration, use a backup and test a copy of the company data; confirm the target release, regional installer and license activation, and make sure staff understand that Edit Log cannot be switched off in the Edit Log edition. Release availability is regional and can change. At the time reflected by Tally’s cited download pages, the US page showed TallyPrime 7.1, while the global page showed TallyPrime 7.0 and separately listed an Edit Log version. Check the correct page for your market rather than assuming one release or installer applies everywhere: US downloads and global downloads.
Does TallyPrime Edit Log cost more?
There is no universal pricing conclusion that applies to every market or license. Tally’s official buying pages present regional prices and licensing options; the available information does not establish one global Edit Log surcharge or guarantee that the editions cost the same. Cost depends on factors such as country, Silver or Gold licensing, user needs, subscription versus lifetime license, service requirements, taxes and commercial terms. Check the relevant regional store before buying: India buying options, global buying options or US buying options.
