Vaniya Agrawal had already submitted her resignation when she protested Microsoft’s reported technology ties to Israel’s military at the company’s 50th-anniversary event on April 4, 2025. Microsoft then made her departure immediate, before her planned April 11 exit. The distinction matters: she resigned, but she did not complete an ordinary notice period.

Who is Vaniya Agrawal?

Agrawal was an Indian-American software engineer employed by Microsoft and associated with No Azure for Apartheid, an employee-led campaign opposing the company’s alleged technology relationships with Israel. Her published resignation letter explains her reasons for leaving; it represents her own views, not an official Microsoft position.

No Azure for Apartheid has called on Microsoft to end or review contracts involving the Israeli military. The campaign’s descriptions and demands are advocacy positions, rather than independent verification of how Microsoft services were used.

What happened at Microsoft’s anniversary event?

On April 4, 2025, at Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington, headquarters, Agrawal interrupted a question-and-answer session involving Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer and Satya Nadella. She challenged the company over its alleged role in providing cloud and AI technology used by the Israeli military in the Gaza war. The Associated Press reported on the protest and the employment sequence that followed.

Aboussad’s separate protest

A second Microsoft engineer, Ibtihal Aboussad, interrupted Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman during another part of the anniversary program. Aboussad was based at Microsoft’s Toronto office. The two incidents were separate, though both employees were associated with No Azure for Apartheid and protested the company’s reported technology ties to Israel’s military.

Reporting said Microsoft accused Aboussad of deliberate disruption and that HR told her she was being fired. Her case should not be conflated with Agrawal’s: their actions took place at different moments in the event, and the reported employment accounts differ. TechCrunch’s report covered both employees.

What did Agrawal say in her resignation letter?

Agrawal argued that Microsoft’s technology had become part of the military-industrial complex and questioned who was being “empowered” by the company’s products. She said Azure cloud and AI services were being supplied to Israel and argued that Microsoft had a responsibility to scrutinize their use. She also said the company’s public ethical commitments conflicted with its alleged military relationships.

Those are Agrawal’s allegations and moral judgments. They explain her protest, but they do not by themselves establish what a particular Microsoft service did in a specific military operation. Her full letter is published by No Azure for Apartheid.

Did Agrawal resign or was she fired?

Both descriptions capture part of the reported sequence, but either one alone can mislead. Agrawal had reportedly given two weeks’ notice and planned to leave on April 11, 2025. After the protest, a manager told her Microsoft had made her resignation immediately effective. The result was that she left before the date she had planned.

Some reports and the employee campaign described the outcome as a firing or termination. The most precise summary is that Agrawal had resigned, and Microsoft accelerated the end of her employment after the protest; the available accounts do not make “a normal voluntary departure” an adequate description. Euronews reported on the notice period and employees’ characterization of the terminations.

What is the dispute about Microsoft’s technology and Israel?

Azure is Microsoft’s cloud-computing platform. Cloud services can provide computing capacity, data storage and other infrastructure; AI services can help process or analyze information. Describing those services accurately is important: Azure is not itself a weapon, and reporting about technology supplied to a government does not establish that Microsoft built a weapons system.

An Associated Press investigation reported that Microsoft and OpenAI AI models had been used in an Israeli military program involved in selecting bombing targets during conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. Reporting also cited a contract worth approximately $133 million between Microsoft and Israel’s Ministry of Defense. That figure is reported in coverage of the relationship; it should not be read as the price of a weapons system or as proof that the entire contract concerned targeting.

The disputed questions are more specific: which services were provided, which units or systems used them, how they contributed to military decisions, and what connection—if any—can be established between a service and harm to civilians. Evidence that a technology was used within a military system does not, on its own, prove that a particular product caused a particular strike or death.

What did Microsoft say?

Microsoft has said employees have channels for raising concerns but that conduct disrupting business events is not permitted. The company’s position on workplace conduct is separate from the factual dispute over technology use.

On May 15, 2025, Microsoft published a statement on its technology and Israel-Gaza. It said an internal review found no evidence that Azure or AI services had been used to harm people in Gaza. That is Microsoft’s own conclusion, not an independent exoneration. The statement, as reported here, does not establish an independent review or settle every question about the scope and use of services described in other reporting.

Why the headline wording matters

Calling the event a protest against Microsoft’s “support for Israel” is broader than the documented dispute. Agrawal and fellow campaigners objected to reported contracts and the alleged provision or use of Microsoft cloud and AI services by Israeli state and military bodies. The controversy concerns those relationships and their use, not a demonstrated general political endorsement.

Likewise, “Microsoft supplied AI weapons” overstates what the reporting establishes. The more careful formulation is that reporting described Microsoft services and AI models being used in military systems, while the scope, operational role and consequences remain contested. Microsoft’s stated review finding and the Associated Press reporting should be read as distinct accounts, not collapsed into a single settled conclusion.

What the case leaves unresolved

Agrawal’s protest made employee dissent visible, but the underlying technology-accountability question extends beyond her departure: how should a company assess and disclose the military use of general-purpose cloud and AI services? The answer depends on transparent information about contracts, safeguards, actual use and the consequences of that use—details that remain central to the dispute between Microsoft’s account and its critics’ allegations.
