The headline’s “save up to $400” offer was a historical Amazon deal reported on July 11, 2025—not a verified promotion for August 2026. It applied to one specific configuration: a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M3 chip, 24GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD, listed at $1,299 instead of $1,699. The original article also listed two M4 Air discounts. Prices and stock from that sale should not be treated as current.
What the $400 MacBook deal included
Engadget’s July 11, 2025 report described an Amazon offer on a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M3 chip, 24GB unified memory and 512GB of storage. Its listed price was $1,299, compared with a stated former price of $1,699—a $400 reduction. The discount referred to that higher-spec configuration, not every MacBook or a base 15-inch Air. Engadget’s original deal report is historical, and its “still in stock” wording applied at the time of the 2025 Prime Day sale.
Apple introduced the M3 MacBook Air generation in March 2024. Apple’s product listing for a refurbished 15-inch M3 model confirms the 24GB/512GB configuration and a 15.3-inch display. Apple’s M3 launch announcement and refurbished product listing provide model details, but do not verify the old Amazon price or stock.
Other MacBook Air prices in the 2025 report
The same Engadget report listed two M4 models. It called them base configurations but did not provide full memory and storage specifications in the available article excerpt, so confirm those details on any listing before comparing prices.

| Model in the historical report | Configuration stated | Reported price | Former price stated | Stated saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15-inch MacBook Air, M3 | 24GB memory, 512GB SSD | $1,299 | $1,699 | $400 |
| 15-inch MacBook Air, M4 | Base configuration; memory and storage not stated in the report | $1,049 | $1,199 | $150 |
| 13-inch MacBook Air, M4 | Base configuration; memory and storage not stated in the report | $849 | $999 | $150 |
These are historical Prime Day figures, not live offers. A sale badge is also only as useful as its comparison price: the listed former price does not by itself establish an all-time low or prove that a similar configuration currently costs more elsewhere.
Does the deal still make sense in 2026?
As of August 18, 2026, the 2025 Amazon offer cannot be presented as available without checking a live listing. Apple’s currently surfaced 15-inch MacBook Air page uses an M5 chip and showed $1,299 starting pricing, with a displayed 24GB/512GB configuration at $1,499 when the page was crawled. Those are dated Apple-store signals, not a guarantee of today’s price or stock. Check Apple’s 15-inch M5 configuration for current details.

The historical M3 offer’s strongest point was its combination of 24GB memory and 512GB storage at a lower stated price than the newer-generation M4 listings. That can matter more to a buyer who runs many demanding apps than the chip-generation label alone. But whether it is a good purchase now depends on the actual price, condition, warranty, and the gap to a comparable M5 model; the 2025 discount alone cannot answer that.
Apple’s refurbished store also surfaced a 15-inch M3 with 24GB/512GB at $1,139 when crawled. Apple says its certified refurbished products include a one-year limited warranty and 14-day returns. Price and availability can change, and refurbished stock is not the same as a new Amazon listing. Check Apple’s refurbished listing for its current price and terms.

Choose by screen size, memory and storage
13-inch for portability and a lower entry price
A 13-inch Air takes up less space and is easier to carry frequently. It can be a sensible fit for school, travel and everyday productivity if its memory and storage suit the buyer’s workload. The 2025 report’s $849 M4 price was for a base configuration whose exact memory and storage were not stated there, so it should not be compared directly with the 24GB/512GB M3 without checking the listing.
15-inch for more room to work
The larger display is useful for side-by-side documents, spreadsheets, editing timelines and multitasking, but it is less compact to carry. The featured M3 deal was not a base model: it paired that larger screen with 24GB memory and 512GB storage. Apple lists two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack for the refurbished M3 configuration. Buyers who need HDMI, an SD-card reader, wired Ethernet or USB-A may need a hub or dock.

Decide how much memory you need
Unified memory is shared by the CPU and GPU, and it is not a later user upgrade. For browsing, office work, streaming, schoolwork and light coding, a base-memory model may be adequate. More memory is worth considering for large browser workloads, development environments, photo or video editing, virtual machines, containers, or a long ownership period. The right choice depends on actual workloads and the price difference; a newer chip alone does not make a lower-memory model the better buy.
Match storage to how you work
A 512GB SSD gives more room for local photo libraries, creative apps, games and offline media. A 256GB model may suit a cloud-first user, but leaves less space for macOS, applications and files. MacBook storage is not normally user-upgradable after purchase. Cloud storage or an external SSD can help, but adds cost and may be less convenient.

What to verify before ordering a live listing
- Match the full configuration. Check screen size, chip generation, memory, storage, color and whether the listing is new, renewed or refurbished. A similar product name is not enough.
- Check seller and condition. On Amazon, confirm whether Amazon or a third-party marketplace seller is responsible for the sale. Review the stated condition, return policy and warranty source, and make sure the listing is for U.S. stock if that matters to you.
- Compare like with like. Confirm that the displayed reference price applies to the exact same configuration. Compare total price and terms with current-generation and certified-refurbished alternatives rather than relying on a discount badge.
- Confirm checkout details. Recheck stock, delivery date, seller, condition and final price at checkout. Deal inventory and pricing can change; the original 2025 availability claim does not establish any current offer.
How to read the original review claims
Engadget reported a score of 90 for its M3 MacBook Air review, praising M3 performance, build quality, slim design, the 15-inch display and six-speaker audio. It also noted that the charging and USB-C ports are on one side, which can be inconvenient for some peripheral setups. These are Engadget’s review judgments, not new testing or evidence that the historical price was the lowest available. Read the original report and its review context.
