Rebranding IT for a Modern Mission: When a New Name Makes Sense

A new IT name only works when it reflects real changes in mission, capabilities and day-to-day work. Here’s how to assess readiness and make the shift meaningful.

A new name can help an IT organization signal a broader business role, but it cannot create that role by itself. Rebrand only when the team’s mission, capabilities and way of working are changing too—and address unreliable service or employee dissatisfaction before making the name the focus.

Start with service readiness, not a new label

If employees mainly experience IT through slow support, unreliable systems or hard-to-use tools, a rebrand may sound like a cosmetic fix. Isaac Sacolick’s June 2024 CIO.com opinion article recommends first listening to business stakeholders and employees who work closely with technology. Use those conversations to identify recurring problems as well as opportunities for IT to contribute more directly to business goals.

Track employee satisfaction regularly so leaders can see whether basic service is improving. The article does not prescribe a survey method or threshold; the useful point is to make user experience visible and revisit it over time. Martin Davis, CIO and managing partner at Dunelm Associates, describes the shift this way: “We have to get away from the keep-the-lights-on mentality and that IT is just there to provide laptops, mobile phones, and support the service desk.”

Define the modern IT mission before choosing a name

Decide what the organization is actually expected to do. A modern remit might include some of the capabilities below, but no company needs to assign all of them to a single IT department. The right scope depends on business strategy, existing expertise and how responsibilities are distributed.

  • Customer products and experiences: Build or improve the digital products and services customers use.
  • Data and AI: Develop data operations and governance, and determine whether machine learning or AI capabilities belong in the organization’s remit.
  • Employee experience: Partner with HR and departments to improve the tools and workflows employees rely on.
  • Modernization and automation: Update applications, integrate systems and automate work where doing so addresses a real business need.

Make explicit how much technology work will sit inside IT versus in business teams, and who will set standards, select tools and provide ongoing support. These choices define the operating model behind the name. As Tyler James Johnson, co-founder and CTO of PrivOps, put it: “If we’re rebranding, unless we’re also transforming, then all we’re doing is putting lipstick on a pig.”

Choose a name that describes the intended role

Sacolick’s article presents several possible names, not a ranking of proven options. Joe Puglisi, a former CIO, investor, advisor and board member, favors Business Technology (BT): “It should be BT for Business Technology, and I emphasized that the B comes before the T.” Martin Davis prefers Business Solutions Group (BSG), while Sacolick says he prefers Digital and Transformation Department.

Name What it signals When it may fit
Business Technology (BT) Technology is framed in terms of the business it serves. When leaders want the organization’s business partnership to be prominent.
Business Solutions Group (BSG) The organization is presented as a partner in solving business problems. When the team’s work spans solutions and business needs beyond traditional infrastructure and support.
Digital and Transformation Department Digital work and organizational change are explicit parts of the remit. When transformation is a central, real responsibility—not just a label.

These descriptions are decision aids, not measured outcomes. Compare candidate names by asking whether they describe the intended business mission, match actual capabilities and operating changes, and make sense to employees and executives. No evidence in the CIO.com article establishes that one name is more effective than another. Dr. Mahesh Juttiyavar, global CIO of Mastek, captures the underlying requirement: “Renaming IT isn’t merely cosmetic; it demands a genuine shift in purpose.”

Align executives and staff around what will change

Before announcing a new department name, explain to executives what is changing, why it matters to them and how progress will be demonstrated. Connect the goals to business impact rather than presenting rebranding as a communications exercise. Choose a genuine pain point to address and identify achievable early improvements that make the new priorities tangible.

Staff need the same clarity about new goals, responsibilities and individual objectives. Repeat the explanation through the transition, and align performance objectives and key results with the work the organization is now meant to deliver. Joanne Friedman, PhD, CEO of Connektedminds, emphasizes that changing the name is not enough: “Before we rebrand, we need to reposition and ensure that everybody understands that what’s changed is experimentation, innovation, and not just the technology but how it’s applied, which is actually more important than the technology itself.”

Make the new culture visible in everyday work

Show that the operating model has changed by bringing stakeholders into the work, not only into the announcement. Sacolick suggests inviting them to sprint reviews, and using lunch-and-learns, brainstorming sessions and hackathons to encourage feedback, learning and collaboration. Pick activities that fit the organization’s work and give participants a meaningful role.

Review how success is measured as well. Uptime and ticket volumes remain relevant to service delivery, but a broader remit may call for digital KPIs that reflect business outcomes, customer or employee experience, modernization or automation. The article does not prescribe a universal metric set, so choose measures tied to the mission the organization has actually adopted.

When a rebrand is premature

Delay the name change if leaders have not agreed on the mission, employees still face unresolved basic service problems, or the team cannot explain what will change in its responsibilities and behavior. A rebrand is most credible when people can point to visible changes in priorities, collaboration and delivery—not just new words on an org chart.
