Apple and OpenAI have not disclosed the financial terms of their ChatGPT integration. A 2024 report said neither company paid the other, while commentators argued that OpenAI could benefit from exposure to Apple’s users. That makes “paying in exposure” a shorthand for a possible distribution benefit—not a confirmed payment, contract term, or measured dollar value.
What Apple and OpenAI announced
On June 10, 2024, Apple announced ChatGPT integration for Siri and its systemwide Writing Tools in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. When Siri judged ChatGPT useful, it could ask the user before sending a request; Apple said the same permission step applied before sending documents or photos. ChatGPT also powered image generation through Writing Tools’ Compose feature. The idea was to make ChatGPT available from Apple’s built-in experiences rather than require users to switch apps. (Apple’s announcement; OpenAI’s announcement.)
OpenAI said people could use ChatGPT through the integration without an account, while existing subscribers could connect their accounts to use paid features. That arrangement created a potential route from Apple’s built-in access to OpenAI accounts and subscriptions, but the announcements did not report whether users followed that path or how much revenue it generated.
Apple’s June 2024 announcement described Apple Intelligence as free and named iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, plus iPad and Mac models with M1 or later, among compatible hardware. Those were launch-era details, not a current compatibility list; software, language, and regional availability were also staged over time.

What is known about the deal’s money?
| What is known | What the evidence says |
|---|---|
| Official terms | The companies announced integration, account-free access, account linking, and privacy protections. Their announcements did not publish a fee, revenue share, or cash transfer. (Apple; OpenAI.) |
| Reported payment arrangement | The Information reported in 2024, citing a person familiar with the deal, that neither Apple nor OpenAI was paying the other for the iPhone integration. Its account said OpenAI hoped wider iPhone distribution could lead to paid-service signups. This is attributed reporting about private terms, not an official confirmation from either company. (The Information.) |
| “Exposure” interpretation | The Atlantic argued that OpenAI should be paying Apple for exposure. It also reported that an OpenAI spokesperson would not share the deal terms and that Apple had not immediately responded. The argument is commentary about the potential value of distribution, not evidence that exposure was a contractual payment. (The Atlantic.) |
| Commercial results | The available reporting does not establish incremental ChatGPT signups or subscriptions attributable to Apple, the cost of serving integrated requests, any revenue split, a later change to the terms, or a monetary value for the exposure. No deal valuation is established by the cited sources. |
Why exposure could matter to OpenAI
ChatGPT access inside Siri and Writing Tools put the service in front of people using Apple devices at moments when they might want help. Account-free access reduced the need to sign up before trying it; connecting a ChatGPT account offered a path for subscribers to use paid features. That is a plausible distribution and conversion opportunity. It is not proof of how many people tried ChatGPT, became subscribers, or generated revenue through the integration.
Apple, in turn, gained access to ChatGPT capabilities in its software experiences. The public announcements do not attach a disclosed price to either side’s contribution, so it is not possible to compare the value of Apple’s distribution with the value of OpenAI’s technology on a known financial basis.

How privacy differs with and without a ChatGPT account
Data handling depends on whether a user connects a ChatGPT account. Apple’s privacy page, dated September 14, 2026, says a request and its attachments, along with limited context such as time zone, country, device type, language, and feature used, may be sent to ChatGPT. Apple says IP addresses are obscured, though general location is provided for purposes including fraud prevention and legal compliance. (Apple’s privacy information.)
- Without a connected account: OpenAI says it processes requests to provide a safe response and comply with applicable law; it does not receive the user’s IP address, store the requests, or use them to train its models in this mode. Apple says OpenAI must process the information only to fulfill the request and may not retain it or use it for training except as required by law. (OpenAI’s explanation; Apple’s privacy information.)
- With a connected account: OpenAI’s existing account settings and policies apply. Depending on those choices, interactions can be saved in chat history and may be used to improve services. OpenAI says users can control model improvement and use Temporary Chat in ChatGPT settings. (OpenAI’s explanation.)
Apple also says it collects limited operational information about the volume or size of requests and responses. The account-free protections should not be generalized to requests made while signed in to ChatGPT.

What changed in the relationship by 2026?
The 2024 integration later sat alongside a more complicated relationship. The Associated Press reported in 2026 that Apple sued OpenAI, accusing it of trade-secret theft connected with OpenAI’s hardware efforts. The allegations are Apple’s claims, not established facts; OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri told AP the company had “no interest in other companies’ trade secrets.” AP described the relationship as having edged toward rivalry. The lawsuit does not reveal or settle the earlier integration’s financial terms. (Associated Press.)
In separate litigation, Apple’s court filing described the ChatGPT integration as non-exclusive and quoted Apple’s stated intention to support other AI models. That is Apple’s position in litigation; the filing alone does not independently confirm every aspect of the partnership’s current arrangements. (Apple’s filing.)

What the headline really means
The companies have not published a payment clause or a value for “exposure.” The most precise reading is that Apple supplied a route to ChatGPT through its products, while OpenAI supplied capabilities Apple could offer its users. A 2024 report said no money changed hands between them for the integration; the claim remains attributed reporting, and the commercial results of the arrangement are not established.
