Amazon’s AmaZen was a small, enclosed kiosk that offered employees self-guided meditation and other calming content during their shifts. The company presented it as part of a broader workplace wellness program in 2021; critics called it a “Despair Closet,” arguing that a mindfulness booth could not make up for concerns about warehouse working conditions. There is no established independent evidence that AmaZen improved employees’ mental health, and its current use is not documented by the available reporting.
What was Amazon’s “Despair Closet”?
“Despair Closet” was a mocking nickname, not Amazon’s name for the installation. Amazon called the kiosk AmaZen. The enclosed station appeared in some operations buildings and was announced in May 2021 as one feature of WorkingWell, the company’s health and safety program.
Amazon said workers could visit AmaZen during shifts to watch guided meditations, positive affirmations and calming scenes with sound. The stated aim was to offer a quiet, individual place to pause and regroup. Leila Brown, an Amazon employee with a sports-medicine background, created it. Brown described her intention as making “a space that’s quiet” where people could focus on their mental and emotional wellbeing.
Why did the kiosk draw criticism?
The criticism centered on the gap between a brief, self-guided wellness activity and workers’ concerns about the conditions surrounding their shifts. The Guardian’s contemporaneous 2021 coverage reported that social-media users mocked the booth amid complaints about warehouse pace, breaks, bathroom access and injuries. Writer Talia Lavin’s post, reproduced by the Guardian, put the objection plainly: “livable wages and working conditions are better than a mobile Despair Closet.”

That criticism does not establish that every worker faced the same conditions, or that a quiet place to pause has no value. It highlights a different question: whether an optional kiosk can address problems that arise from workload, staffing, injury risk, access to breaks or pay. A calming video cannot itself change those conditions.
How did AmaZen fit into WorkingWell?
Amazon announced WorkingWell on May 17, 2021, describing it as part of more than $300 million in safety projects for that year and setting a goal of reducing recordable incident rates by 50% by 2025. The company said the program had been piloted in the United States in 2019 and had expanded to 859,000 employees at 350 sites in North America and Europe as of its 2021 announcement.

Amazon’s 2021 sustainability report later said WorkingWell reached approximately 1.2 million employees. It also reported a 15% or greater reduction in musculoskeletal-disorder incidents among participants in WorkingWell huddles compared with nonparticipants. That comparison concerns the broader huddle intervention and musculoskeletal-disorder incidents; it is not evidence that AmaZen reduced mental-health problems.
The company also announced Resources for Living, a confidential mental-health and daily-life support benefit for U.S. employees and their households, funded for up to 24 million counseling sessions per year. That is a separate kind of support from AmaZen’s self-guided kiosk content, and the announced session capacity does not mean that each employee received or used counseling.

Did AmaZen help workers?
Amazon employee Katie Miller said using the booth helped her pause, regroup and return to work more focused. That is a personal account, not an independent evaluation of the kiosk’s effect across the workforce.
The launch materials and contemporaneous reporting do not establish an independent causal study of AmaZen’s mental-health effects. HR Dive reported expert questions about the strength of the evidence, worker privacy and whether people on demanding shifts had sufficient time or felt comfortable using the stations. The available reporting also does not establish how many kiosks were installed.

Is AmaZen still in use?
The available launch materials and contemporaneous reporting do not establish whether AmaZen remained widely deployed after 2021. They also do not establish the total number of kiosks installed, so it is not possible to infer current availability from Amazon’s announcement of the program.
