The FTC said Razer would pay more than $1.1 million after alleging the company misrepresented its Zephyr face mask as “N95-grade.” The headline figure combines two separate amounts: $1,071,254.33 designated for consumer relief and a $100,000 civil penalty. In January 2025, the FTC announced it was sending full refunds to 6,764 consumers—but that announcement does not establish that a new claim can still be filed today.
Why Razer was ordered to pay
The Razer Zephyr was a transparent mask with fans, filter areas and internal color-changing lights. The FTC challenged how it was marketed, alleging that Razer represented it as “N95-grade” even though it had never been submitted to the FDA or the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for testing and had not been certified as an N95 mask. The agency’s April 29, 2024 announcement and the complaint filed April 26, 2024 describe allegations, not a separate finding that Razer admitted wrongdoing.
The complaint states: “The Zephyr has never been certified or otherwise approved as an N95 mask, and Defendants lacked competent and reliable scientific bases for their claims.” That sentence is the government’s allegation as presented in the complaint. The settlement also restricts misleading health claims, misuse of government marks and unsupported claims that products meet government standards.
What the $1.1 million figure includes
The FTC’s 2024 announcement described two distinct payments under the stipulated proposed settlement. The larger amount was intended for consumer relief; the penalty was separate.

These figures and their stated purposes come from the FTC’s April 2024 announcement. The $100,000 should not be described as money paid to Zephyr buyers.
Who received refunds, and how payments were sent
On January 13, 2025, the FTC announced it was distributing full refunds to 6,764 consumers by check or PayPal. According to the agency’s refund notice, checks had to be cashed within 90 days and PayPal payments accepted within 30 days. Those were deadlines for payments in that distribution—not proof that an unpaid buyer can open a new claim now.

The FTC identified Simpluris as the refund administrator and published 1-833-285-3003 for questions about the payments. The agency also warned consumers that they never have to pay money or provide account information to get an FTC refund. Treat a request for an advance fee or sensitive account details as a warning sign, and verify payment questions through the FTC’s notice rather than an unsolicited message.
Can you still claim a Razer Zephyr refund?
The FTC’s January 2025 notice confirms that payments were sent to the identified recipients, but it does not establish whether new claims or replacement payments are available now. If you were expecting a payment, use the administrator contact listed in the FTC notice to ask about that distribution. Do not assume the expired check and PayPal acceptance windows create a current application period.

Did the Zephyr qualify as an N95 mask?
No certification is established in the FTC materials: the agency said the Zephyr had not been submitted to FDA or NIOSH for testing and was never certified as N95. “N95-grade” was the challenged marketing description, not evidence that the product met the N95 standard. A mask’s appearance, fans or filters do not establish respirator certification.

Do not use the Zephyr’s disputed marketing claims as evidence that it provides certified N95 protection. For any respirator, look for documented certification and intended use, consider fit, and check current information from the manufacturer and relevant public-health authorities. The FTC materials do not establish a particular alternative product or its certification.
