The warning in this headline dates to January 18, 2024. Google CEO Sundar Pichai told employees the company would remove workforce layers to free resources for its priorities, including investment in AI. He announced no total or list of affected roles, and said cuts would be less extensive than in 2023 and would “not touch every team.” The memo did not establish that AI caused any particular job elimination.
What did Pichai announce in January 2024?
CBS News reported that Pichai’s employee memo said Google would “remove layers [of its workforce]” to create capacity for investment in company priorities. “The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices,” he wrote. A Google representative confirmed the memo to CBS MoneyWatch.
Pichai did not identify specific teams or roles, nor say how many positions would be cut. He said the reductions would be less extensive than the previous year’s and would “not touch every team.” In other words, the memo described a workforce-restructuring plan and its broad rationale, not a confirmed layoff count. CBS News, January 18, 2024.
How does the 2023 figure fit in?
CBS reported that Google eliminated more than 12,000 roles in 2023 across areas including hardware, shopping, core engineering, policy, and ad sales. That is a reported count for the prior year—not the size of the 2024 plan Pichai discussed. CBS News, January 18, 2024.

Is Google firing people because of AI?
The memo connected workforce choices to creating capacity for company priorities, amid Google’s AI investment push. That stated rationale does not prove that AI caused each job elimination, or that a particular role was replaced by an AI system.
Later reporting also does not establish a company-wide causal tally. In a July 16, 2026 report about a worker petition, The Guardian said Google did not comment on whether AI had played a role in its layoffs. The report therefore does not confirm either that AI caused the cuts or that it did not. The Guardian, July 16, 2026.

What do later Google updates tell us?
2026 AI investment remarks
In remarks accompanying Alphabet’s second-quarter 2026 earnings, Pichai discussed AI investment and activity across Search, Cloud, and products. Google reported business indicators including Cloud revenue growth and increased usage of AI products. These are company-reported business updates, not a layoff announcement and not evidence of why a specific team was reduced. Google, July 22, 2026.
Worker petition and layoff protections
The Guardian reported that Alphabet Workers Union members delivered a petition with more than 4,500 signatures calling for layoff protections, guaranteed severance, buyouts before mandatory layoffs, and other safeguards. That figure counts petition signatories, not employees laid off. Union president and Google software engineer Parul Koul characterized the cuts as “not difficult decisions, but simply profit being put over the people that make this company run”; that is her view, not an independently established finding. The Guardian said Google did not immediately respond to its request for comment on the petition. The Guardian, July 16, 2026.
Different view on productivity and jobs
In a May 19, 2026 WIRED interview, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis argued that productivity gains could be used to do more work rather than cut developers. He said, “if engineers are becoming three or four times more productive, then we just [want to] do three or four times more stuff.” This is Hassabis’s stated preference, not a workforce guarantee or policy statement for all of Alphabet. WIRED, May 19, 2026.

The January 2024 memo gave no number for its planned reductions. A TechCrunch roundup published July 25, 2026 said Google had not announced one overall 2026 layoff figure and described cuts occurring through different processes. Any estimates in that roundup are secondary reporting, not a company-confirmed total. The sources cited here do not establish a single total for Google job cuts across 2024–2026 or the share attributable to AI. TechCrunch, July 25, 2026.
