Bitcoin Slips Below $83,000 as Crypto Shares Fall Amid Wider Market Pressure

Bitcoin briefly reached about $83,300 as crypto-linked shares and U.S. indexes fell on October 7, 2026. The reported timing does not prove Bitcoin caused the stock declines.

Bitcoin fell below $84,000 and briefly reached about $83,300 on October 7, 2026, while crypto-linked shares and major U.S. stock indexes also declined. The reports describe a sell-off—not proof that a Bitcoin bubble burst or that Bitcoin caused stocks to fall. They point to rising yields, oil prices and geopolitical concerns as broader pressure on risk assets.

What happened to Bitcoin and stocks on October 7?

CoinDesk’s live coverage reported Bitcoin trading below $84,000 and reaching about $83,300 during the session. It also reported roughly $550 million in leveraged crypto positions liquidated over 24 hours, citing CoinGlass data. Those are figures reported at the time, not an independent reconstruction of market prices. CoinDesk’s October 7 live updates also noted declines in Coinbase, Gemini, Circle, MARA Holdings and Strategy.

U.S. indexes ended lower too, but the declines were modest for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, and larger for the Dow and Russell 2000. The Associated Press reported these closing changes on October 7, 2026:

Index Daily change Closing level
S&P 500 Down 17.16 points, or 0.2% 7,801.77
Dow Jones Industrial Average Down 341.41 points, or 0.7% 51,179.87
Nasdaq composite Down 61.20 points, or 0.2% 27,538.69
Russell 2000 Down 37.09 points, or 1.3% 2,793.20

These figures come from the Associated Press’s October 7 market recap.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Did Bitcoin drag stocks down?

The reports establish that Bitcoin, crypto-related stocks and U.S. indexes fell around the same time. They do not establish that Bitcoin’s decline caused the broader stock-market pullback. Same-day movement is co-movement; it is not, by itself, evidence of cause and effect.

Contemporary coverage cited broader pressures on risk assets. AP pointed to climbing global yields and concerns about inflation and government debt. CoinDesk also discussed rising oil prices, Treasury yields and geopolitical stress. Those are reported context, not proof that any one factor caused every market move that day.

Why crypto and stocks can move together

Investors may treat both crypto assets and riskier equities as sensitive to shifts in risk appetite, so they can fall at the same time. Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lael Brainard described that historical relationship in a July 8, 2022 speech: “Contrary to claims that crypto-assets are a hedge to inflation or an uncorrelated asset class, crypto-assets have plummeted in value and have proven to be highly correlated with riskier equities and with risk appetite more generally.” Brainard’s speech addressed the period she was discussing; it is not a measurement of Bitcoin-stock correlation on October 7, 2026.

Correlation is useful context, but it does not show which asset or event led a particular day’s moves. Establishing causation would require more than noting that prices declined together.

Does a Bitcoin sell-off threaten the wider financial system?

A Federal Reserve discussion paper published in August 2022 said adverse shocks in digital-asset markets had limited spillovers to the traditional financial system at that time. It also identified potential vulnerabilities if connections grew, including stablecoin run risks, valuation pressures, weaknesses in decentralized finance and increasing interconnectedness. That dated assessment is not a current estimate of financial-system risk. Read the Federal Reserve paper.

A decline in Bitcoin or crypto-related shares can matter to people and firms directly exposed to those assets. But the October 7 reports do not show that the crypto sell-off drove the broader index losses or that it created a financial-system crisis.
